UPDATE!
running on 4 cylinders but more niggles are presenting themselves but that is expected.

got one of the driveshafts in, but the RHS inner CV joint is knackered so a new one is required along with a rocker cover gasket cos its leaking oil when the car runs.

the temp gauge works but until i have the CV replaced and the like i cant test if it will overheat on a drive.

here's a teaser on borrorwed wheels ;)

i cant say im liking the ride height atm, needs to be alot lower

Sure it's rare, (ish) but if no one wants it, there ain't much you can do. I'll be pulling the clean doors off for my car. hatch has a spot and a hole of rust. havn't fully checked the floors, but they'll be rusty, probably fixable, but rusty.

it's not something josh or I take joy in, I'd love to keep it as an ebay special track beater, or rat beater, but I have two cars, and not enough money for 3!

Someone with lots of money needs to go buy a huge warehouse somewhere so everyone can go put all their Mk1 stuff they don't need anymore. Then people could come and buy the parts from them as they needed them and it would pay for itself somewhat.

That way it would all be in one place and everyone could benefit. :D

bumped the idle up a bit, still a bit low so ill work on it soonish, gotta get that rocker cover gasket cos it just spits oil everywhere if i run it too long.

Get the updated one piece rubber gasket if you can. I got mine from germanautoparts. Here's a link http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Rabbit/Engine/102/1

You have to change the studs but that only takes 5 minutes. No gasket goo required just bolt it up.

I got a similar one for the sump, but I should have gotten the windage tray. Hmmm .. next order I think.

here's the same part in a different link referring to the petrol fitment.

Good to hear you had some help from Pete & Nick.

Did Nick tune the weber by ear & feel?

Stale fuel will alway's be a killer on performance for sure. Get some good fuel in it & maybe advance the timing a tiny bit & see how it goes.

With the cam advanced it would have had some nice bottom end poke. Well it should have had.

I'm sure if it was a 1.8L it would have gone pretty hard even with a 1.6L head, as the compression should be higher. It should be faster than my stocky GX 1.8L.

I think Bill from memory built a 1830+cc 8v using the 1.6 head & it flew.

yup Nick tuned it by ear and feel, also re-seated the idle jets which made it idle less iratically.

yeh i've shoved some 98 in her and with a good run she should be running alright i recon.

i smell a drag race comin on Tim, i recon i'll get my arse handed to me on a platter but it'll be fun regardless! :D

yup Bills motor is a beast, 1.6 bored and stroked to 1830 using a 1.7 crank from the US and using a Pre-emissions head with big valves and some serious porting! (i think thats it!!!) revs pretty dam hard and he recons it puts out 180hp

Mercedes and BMW wheel bolts are a bit longer than MK1 . I can usually find them lying on the ground in the Euro car section at Pick a Part. They just chuck em on the ground when they pull the wheels off. Take a MK 1 bolt for comparison.

Make sure you get the kind with the sperical seat and NOT the conical style.

That's not all bad.

L/H Stop light - Easy Fix
Cambelt cover - I've got one here with all the mounts(It's red!:))
L/H park light - Easy Fix
indicator flashing rate what the hell? Too slow or too fast?

exhaust too loud - How did you not see that coming?!:duh:
no polution pump - What year was this car?
none pollution engine (wrong model engine) How so? Its still the same engine code
wrong craby surely thats not a RWC issue? Only if it doesn't meet emissions standards.
H/Brake cable hanging -Easy Fix
bumper not fitted properly they are plastic bumpers - Why?
L/H rear tyre - Only got yourself to blame for that one!
Rust L/H sill and floor crushed both sides I have already fixed the rust in this pillar and its just the sill that hangs down that is bent cos someone jacked off those instead of the proper jack points - Bend it back and add some bog and undercoat.
front brake hoses - These things are actually important - get new ones!
R/H seat belt - Could save your life one day!
R/H door adjustment how can you seriously ping someone for this, it just doesnt shut it you push it sofetly - Just fiddle with it for 15 min and grease the latch. This place seems a bit excessive both my '79 golfs got through RWC with no emmisions kit on them at all! They both started off life a diesels too and they were both RWC'd with petrol motors. One of them has a KJet 1800 in it that passed rwc! No air pumps in sight! This place seems pretty @nal!

Getting around the polution pump argument is going to be the tricky one.

Might be simpler to fix the easy/safety stuff and try again elsewhere.

Not once but twice! Two GLDs, two petrol motors, two RWCs!

Both cars started off life as GLDs one got a non airpump 1600 and the other got a MK 2 K-Jet 1800. One of the cars is still actually registered with the diesel motor engine number, no-one bothered to look!

Josh,
I've got a stock Carb and manifold you can bung on it for the RWC, might quieten it down a bit too.

I won't mention the RWC places on here but I can dig out the info if you PM me.

All in all very odd indeed.

If your exhaust is too loud.. Just knock up a plate to go in between one of the flanges with like a 15-20mm hole in it (or a heap of small holes..) and bash it in there.

It'll go like crap but it'll be nice and quiet.. :)

Yeah, but it's hard to win an argument with the "expert".:duh:

I had a Kombi fail a RWC because the interior light didn't work! The expert just showed me the clause in his manual that said "all lights on the car must work". Mind you the windscreens (Yes - I've owned a few splitties) looked like they'd been cleaned with steelo pads!

If you put the stock carb and aircleaner on there and a very obvious crankcase breather into the aircleaner it goes a long way to easing their conscience on emissions "compliance"

Hahaha, I like that one.

You can also get the industrial packs of steel wool from bunnings and just stuff it up the exhaust pipe. It won't last long!

There are several factor's everyone here need's to look at & more importantly, you all need to look at it from his perspective.

Every RWC is different, as everyone has different opinion's on what is road worthy.

I've had windscreen's that had one chip right in the corner of the screen, way out of the line of sight & it was knocked. Took it somewhere else. Passed!

It's a 30+year old car, yes. Who's head is on the chopping block? Not yours Josh. The bloke with the licence's head. Especially if it has to be sited by Vic Road's & they find a fault.
The fines & insurance cost's are enough for your parent's to sell their house & then some.

If you fit the plate in the exhaust as preeny suggested. Make sure they don't see it, as once again, the fines are HUGE. Especially by the EPA.

The carb. is a RWC. Especially if the pollution sticker under the bonnet show's what has to be hooked up & what goes where. If it show's a pollution pump, then that's what it need's.

It might also show that it need's a fresh air pulse system, as did my 77.

I had problem's with my twin dell's on my escort with a RWC, but that's another story.

76's are the only year that the mk1's that don't require pollution gear. Don't get the year's mixed up.

If the sill's are damaged, their damaged, he doesn't care who done it or how it was done. There an integral part of the vehicle's structure & as such is a RW item.

Pete, as I did when my car (in the early day's) needed RWC, we made sure as best as possible that they couldn't pick anything. If the car look's the good's or looks factory, then the engine stuff is often over looked, as with most car's. If it look's like a dog's breakfast, well you make the call.

When I see you next, we'll have a chat about it all.

Jarred
13-08-2008, 10:35 PM
I'm pretty sure my car passed without a cam cover, weber DGV and a breather filter straight off the rocker cover.

Everything else under the bonnet was pretty need, save a few loose wires.

Believe it or not, the main issue i had was with the wheels and tyres! but they passed in the end (brand new rubber on mk 3 steelies. :duh: )

Also had a few small things, like rear seal, and lights, but being a 76'er, didn't have any worries with air pumps/pollution gear.

Josh, if the car was presented for a roadworthy and it was practically on the bump stops they would be looking at everything possible. That is a fact of the trade mate.
With crook lights, a worn low tyre which is such an easy thing to look at before you go in there to see them they are going to think you didnt bother checking it out properly before you presented it. I am not having a go at you but if I had a car dropped off to me, I would certainly be looking very closely for anything I could find, mainly to cover my own backside with the authorities.
Air pumps were fitted after 6/76 to the golfs through to 1979.
The authorities failed a car after a rego inspection last week down here for incorrect CO readings...
Good luck mate, Andrew :)

Car is no where near the bump stops!!!! It just looks that low because of the 13" wheels on there.

yes i know that everything after 76 were fitted with air pumps, but im not about to rip the head off and put an emissions head on there for RWC ;) i'll just take it to a different place that doesnt know Golfs! im not exactly going to rip my engine out am i?

Not having a dig at ya Josh, don't get upset mate. Just saying how people in the trade see things. I know some are way over the top and you have to make certain allowances for old vehicles such as kombi demisters! Air pumps in a 32yo car still working are ridiculous.
You did mention the other week how far off the ground the sump was mate and I am not sure anyone here would pass a vehicle so low.
Please dont read my comments wrong.
down here if you fail, after 30 days the failure notice has to be sent into transport. If someone goes elsewhere and passes, the questions are asked and the vehicles are called in to be checked over by the transport inspectors.
Thank goodness we dont have annual checks!!!
Good luck with it Josh and please dont take offence, I am just stating how it is down here.

Thanks Jarred, there is another side to a lot of the things that go on mate.
A lot of us aren't out to fleece people but are always trying to cover our own butts.
same goes with dodgy repairs, some people set a maximun price on repairs due to their budgets and so some repairs cannot be carried out.
We get the blame then if things go wrong...
I am sure Josh will get his golf up to the mark with the rego thing though.
If the indicators are far too fast then that is an issue too, more than likely needs a flasher unit or incorrect globes.
Cheers! :)

I havent taken offence mate dont worry, sorry if my reply seemed curt :)

yeh the things that are confusing me about the RW that i obtained are that it just seems he was out to fail me.... he pinged me for rust that wasnt even there, just as an example!

i put chrome bumpers back on her, new light globes at the rear, front left indicator isnt working atm, will check it out as soon as Jarred gets over here. Got rid of the emissions stickers from under the bonnet and gave the car a good wash outside, inside and in the engine bay.

ill jack up the coilovers some more aswell at the front. I wont touch the exhaust as i really dont think its that loud

You should come over and grab that cambelt cover this weekend.

butttt after 4 blissful days of driving i blew up the engine. Dam. It was always a lemon of an engine however and an unknown quantity, no matter how much i'd tune it, it'd always ping, toward the end it was using oil and stinking pretty badly.

So i got stuck into it yesterday and ripped it apart ready for a new engine, this time a guarenteed 1.8 with 10:1, flat tops, and a GTI spec cam.

A total of 4 Mk1s and a Mk3 in the drive, quite a sight.:)

Fixed a loose wire on Josh's car and topped up the oil a bit.

Should be a good Golf turn out at DOVW this year.

was an awesome night, the cruising with Jarred and Rach was really awesome, nothing quite like the sound of 2 mk1's side by side at 6,000rpm :D

props to Pete that it ran like this without all the usualy niggles that come with engine conversions!

It's good. Gear stick actually goes where it's meant too. (at least just sitting there they did) They were pretty shagged.
