Ive got a few and i'm thinking of joining my local photography club but a bit apprehensive. they're all probably going to have crazy ass cameras compared to mine. Heres some of my better snaps, majority taken down the sth coast at my holiday house..

Definitely is, I've been going there for about 19 years now.. It's getting a bit more populated now. You go down there for a holiday and end up seeing people you know for the local area..

Some of the shots have been fantastic!! If i can learn to photograph as good as some of you guys here - i'll be very happy!! I'd frame some of these pictures they are that gorgeous..

greece coastline tends to be more white with blue, i think there are too many other colours in that pic for it to be greece, sick shot tho, even it it is a typical postcard shot. (as alot of our photos are)

hmmm, not sure if its Greece, Croatian coastline looks pretty similar. I think i'll be in Greece in July/August too!! Can't wait!!

i was gona say it looks like Croatia..very typical with the stone beaches and the red clay tile roof tops..

Man i miss that place, i haven't been there since 1999..

here are some more snaps of my trip to central Oz 2 years ago. I love the outback so much, great location for some awesum shots, and a clear (smog free) sky to boot! These pics aren't great quality unfortunately, and most of them are "postcard" shots, but oh well. you'll live.:)

Alos note that non of these photo's are edited in anyway. they're all the same size colour textures etc etc as the moment I took em!

Thank you Ray,

That particular panorama of Sydney Harbour was taken with 12 vertical shots stitched together with software. I have printed it to 1,000mm wide and put in a frame on my wall.

The following photos were both printed to 1,800mm wide but I had to trim them down to 1,500mm wide as they didn't have the board for the border big enough for 1,800mm width. The biggest they had was 1,600mm which gives a 50mm border all around the photo inside the frame. Both of these are hanging on my walls at home.

MissVuks, if youre not allowed to have a dalmation, then perhaps consider a German Short Haired Pointer, or Weimeraner, both similar in breeding to dalmations, but highly intelligent too, and "german" dogs to fit in with yr VW heritagej:

They are definitely not dumb, but can be impulsive. This is easily trained out of them, but like all dogs, you need to train them to get the most out of them. Also, it depends on the breeder and their stock. Some may have been too close or interbred and therefore can be dumb, but this is the same for any breed.

This is our second Dalmatian, as our first died of snake bite, and is smarter than our first and she also doesn't have the breeding credentials of our first so may have less interbeeding?

We didn't do too much training with ours and she is quite well behaved but can go off when she gets something into her head. As I say, you must do training as with all dogs. She is fabulous with our kids and a fantastic family pet and she does not really suffer separation anxiety. Having said that, we also take her on our holidays with us and kicks up quite a bit of fuss when we get the bags out to pack. She goes down stairs and waits next to the car whimpering and eagerly waiting to come with us. It is quite funny to watch!

As Gareth has suggested, there are others similar to the Dalmatian like the German Short haired ointer and Waimeraner, but they are similar in temperament to the Dally. My friend has a German Short Haired Pointer and he swears that they are the same dog both in temperament and in intelligence.

So to sum up. No, they are not necessarily dumb and you can train them quite well. As with all dogs, if you make them part of the family, they are much more likely to be friendly, less stressed and more likely to do what you want. Ours is part of our family and we wouldn't swap her for anything.

Witness the movie 101 Dalmatians. They trained all those dogs very well! ;)

I'm not Golfer, but that photo would have been taken on a slow shutter speed, like about 1sec or more so a tripod would have had to be used. This effect is very good so as to give a feeling of movement of the water rather than a static look.

I had the tripod set up on the bridge above the creek, and was shooting with a slow shutter, actually 2.5sec. I haven't photoshopped the image at all, however as it was a very bright day with a lot of shadows from the rainforest, I had a lot of issues with contrast, so I had to do a little bit of post-processing with Digital Photo Pro to sort out the contrast issues.

MissVuks, shooting in full manual mode, I used:
Shutter 2.5sec
Aperture f/22
ISO 100
F/L 24mm

I love the effect of running water taken with a slow shutter, however these photos were not as good as they could have been, as they were taken in the middle of the day, and it is much easier to take good long exposures in the dim light of early morning, or very late afternoon.

for photos like that you really need a ND filter as its just way too bright here is aus lol

Actually, an ND filter will reduce the brightness of *all* of the image so you would end up with the same thing except that you will require an even longer shutter speed.

What is required is a *graduated* ND(Neutral Density) filter. An ND graduated filter has a dark section at the top of the filter and a clear section at the bottom of the filter which allows for a difference of exposure in these areas. This allows for the reduction in the brightness near the top of the frame where the sun is shining but at the bottom of the photo where it is dark it will be balanced more with the top part of the photo. The idea is to reduce the *difference* between the light and dark parts of the photo and this is done with an ND grad filter, not purely a ND filter.

As I stated in my earlier post, photography is a hobby of mine. I have taken about 30,000 photos over the last 4 years with a Digital SLR (DSLR) and previous to that many thousands with film SLR's.

I use a Pentax K20D(just released) which is a 14Mp APS C DSLR which uses standard 35mm film SLR lenses as well as dedicated Digitally optimised lenses. APS C stands for the sensor size which is 23.5mm x 15.7mm whereas a small pocket camera uses a sensor of between about 5mm up to about 8mm wide. 35mm film measures 36mm x 24mm, so any 35mm film lens used has a "crop" factor of 1.53x, so a 50mm lens then has an angle of view of a 76.5mm lens equivalent of a 35mm film SLR.

The larger the sensor, the less noise and the more dynamic range and in most cases better resolution. Dynamic range is the difference between the light and dark areas of a photo. A photo from a larger sensored camera will be more readily able to be enlarged without loss of resolution or increased "grain" on the photo due to the fact that the dynamic range is much larger. I have photos that are 500mm wide on my wall that you cannot see any grain and they are as sharp as a standard 150mm photo from a photo lab.

I have 16 lenses for my camera ranging from 14mm extreme wide angle to 300mm extreme telephoto. This would be equivalent to 21mm to 450mm on 35mm film angle of view.

quick question,
what advantage do you get with a FIX length lense over a normal one?

i see what you mean. i will have to prive some up when i am out next.

quick question,
what advantage do you get with a FIX length lense over a normal one?

Generally, a fixed length lens, or "prime" lens, is faster than a zoom, ie the maximum aperture is larger and so you can shoot in lower light or get less depth of field for a more artistic look to the image. Also, the optical qualities of a fixed focal length lens over a zoom is better as the designers can make sure the lens is designed to work at only one focal length rather than a range of focal lengths. Also, the more focal lengths a zoom has to cover, the more compromises there are, so a 3x zoom will generally perform better than a 10x zoom.

The disadvantage of a fixed length lens is that you are limited to the one focal length and would have to change lenses in order to change focal lengths or 'zoom' with your feet, ie walk to or away from your subject to get the desired subject size or effect. Also, you will require more lenses if you want to go with primes rather than a zoom which can cover a number of focal lengths.

Lance B
27-02-2008, 12:54 PM
but wouldnt you get more movement because you have used a slower shutter???

Yes you would get more movement due to the slower shutter speed but you can alter this by changing the aperture to a 'faster' aperture like f5.6 rather than f8 for instance. You can also use a tripod for static subject matter and in the photo of the water in the creek it may even be an advantage to use a slower shutter speed to have the water movement. The aperture is the iris of the lens and can be altered by controls on the camera if it has manual settings.

ND graduated filters are toning down one section of the scene, so the exposure of the dark areas does not alter, just the toning down of the bright areas and you may find that the shutter speed may ot actually alter very much even thought the ND grad filter may have a 2 stop(shutter speed) difference between the light and dark areas of the filter.

For my landscape photos, I use the ND grad filters quite extensively and they can really add impact to a photo. In the sample photos I posted a day or so ago, the Harbour Bridge photo and the photo of the sea with the rocks in the foreground and the looming clouds were taken with ND grads and would have much less impact without it.

The important thing to remember is that once a sensor becomes over saturated, ie the shutter speed is too long for a given light level, then the information is lost. The photo has blown the highlights and that bright area cannot be recovered, so even of you try to correct it in post process, you will not get any information from the blown out areas and they will appear white or lose colour density and will look awful. The idea is to keep the exposure under control by exposing the bright areas near to the limit but not overstepping that limit.

This is where a ND grad filter can be invaluable if you want to record the bright *and* dark areas of a scene. Of course, it is not always necessary to be able to record the complete range of brightness of an image for that image to be acceptable.

I hope my explanation makes it clear. If there is anything you do not understand or disagree with, please let me know.

Awesome pic's Valver & TassieGTI

Tassie & Hobart have some absolutely awesome places for some good scenic pictures.

Love it. Can't wait to get backdown there. Hopefully next time, get a lap or ten at Baskerville.

These aren't anything special, but I thought I'd throw them up anyway...
Snow and sports shots are hard to pull off!!!
But having 6.5 shots per second on the Canon 40D definitely makes them a lot easier!!!
My brother took these particular photos of me rippin' around in the chopped up halfpipe...

They were all taken about 7 weeks ago in Japan...
P.S - If you like the snow, go to Japan, their powder is freakin' awesome! 8% water by volume!!!!! OMG!!!

That storm was absolutely crazy let me tell you.

I came out from work to find a tree branch had fallen on my LHF guard & bonnet.
Not much damage. Ah well. What you going to do about it.

Didn't really care that much as its just a commuter/cruiser. My mate was more pissed off about it than I was.
Just wish a bigger branch had fallen on the roof!

I didn't feel so bad once I seen a new Porsche also sport a very nice set of "Tree Branch Roof Racks".
They must have been heavy as it caved the roof in & the front & rear screen's were smashed!

We got sent home from uni on wednesday, cause it was too dangerous. We have some big sails that have been put up over an eating area, except they got all ripped up! and they were flailing everywhere in the wind, making loud cracking whip noises so I heard...

All this from a Tornado in WA too!

Cupra - was that the storm that passed through last night?? it was pretty nasty

I was driving home with my boyf (was raining) and as soon as i pulled up infront of my house we got hammered by HAIL!! i was literally crying because my polo was in the driveway getting pummeled..

There was a brief pause in the rain/hail so we ran to the front but as soon as we got there LOL we got smashed with hail and rain. i was saturated through a jacket, vest and jeans.

Luckily the polo survived with not a scratch!

was watching 10HD docos this afternoon. that crazy guy on angry planet was chasing storms and taking some awesome lightning pictures. He said you need to have your exposure as long as possible to take lightning pics? And its kind of a luck of the draw if you get the picture

What kind of an exposure is suitable to take lightning pics? I also noticed he had a tripod which is necessity for long exposure pics right?

i love storms and would like to try take some pics next time we have one

Golfer

It's always a good idea to use a remote shutter with the camera set on "Bulb". That way you control the release, so you don't capture overlapping strikes. I use a Micnova wireless shutter that has a 100m range.

golfmeup
21-04-2008, 04:26 PM
Set the camera on "Bulb" and yeah if you have a wireless shutter release use that!

A tripod and a long exposure are definates,

I find it depends on the storm, sometimes I get lucky just popping of 30 sec exposures and if there is a lot of lightning in one area you are bound to get one in frame.

MissVuks
21-04-2008, 05:57 PM
