So with the OG camp Alltrack written off, it’s time for the redux.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/01/fc8f9fb9f97313d1fc69dd73f49adf88-1.jpg

Below is the Link to my old B7 thread for reference. I’m looking to go down a similar path with the B8.

First thing will be to check the old 16” wheels with AT tyres are ok to fit.
The current gen Alltrack only have down to 17” wheels. The spare in the B7 was a 16” so I got away with using that size alloy as a match to the smallest OEM size available.

B7 used a 225/45/18
B8 uses a 245/45/18

Previous owner had fitted 245/45r18 100w Kuhmo ecsta 4xii M+S only 4000km ago whicha re in very good shape so I won’t be rushing out to replace them just yet with the 16” ATs

In the interim I’m looking at getting this kit from the USA to lift the Passat 1”. The BES (Bearded elevation system) designed for the Golf Alltrack. The B7 Passat wasn’t compatible but the B8 is MQB platform so this is a pretty nifty setup to get some height. Around $650 shipped from the creator in Pennsylvania.

But in 18” size so the current M&S rated tyres fitted on the OEM rims can be reused (they are almost new rubber) there’s a nice clean set available locally second hand.

FYI I’ve found an interesting site that you can purchase used rims from Japan at a pretty low price (not sure what shipping would cost though)

Is this skid plate a standard dealer part? It’s a nice thick rubber.

Really keen to see how this lift kit goes. A mild lift is really all the Alltrack is missing.

We took ours through some fire trails, power line trails and other fun places over the break (almost on the beach too until all the lifted LandCruisers on 35in tyres carved up the lead in trails too much to even make it out to the beach). We have 235/60R16 all terrain tyres on Tiguan rims such work really well but still managed to scratch up the bumpers. That lift kit would have made all the difference.

Is this on a B8 Alltrack? Any issues with brake clearance on the 16” rims? I still have my 215/65/16 combo ready to put on.

No issues at all on B8. The Tiguan rims have more offset too, so coupled with the 235 tyres gives a pretty chunky look.

One thing I realised though is that while the tyres should technically give 3% over on the speedo, with such a big side wall the speedo reads between 3% under (i.e. 100 on the dial is actually 97 km/h) and exactly 100 km/h depending on tyre pressures. LT rated tyres might have less squish in the sidewall...

re: the lift kit. You have to pull the suspension apart to fit the lifting blocks. Why not just get new springs made locally? They can be done at the same spring rate or a bit stiffer / softer as needed.

If you just want to experiment, AliExpress has spring bumpers for ~$30/pr. (https://www.aliexpress.com/af/spring-bumper.html?SearchText=spring+bumper&d=y&initiative_id=SB_20190212185529&origin=n&catId=0&isViewCP=y&jump=afs)

Loving the upgrade from the B7 $36k onroad with 44k on it.
Spec’d with the luxury pack and pano roof. (Maybe the same pack)
Has the park assist, heated massage memory seats, cornering lights etc.
I would have preferred a lighter colour like our old one but this was too good a deal to pass up. Full service history, new tyres at 41k and very clean. There is not a single mark on the wheels, couple of tiny door dings. But the one thing I do miss is the paddle shift.

That looks awesome, they really need to offer them with more lift and smaller wheels. There’s no point to 18” wheels with low profile on a vehicle like this, not sure why they thought 19” on the Wolfsburg was a good idea.

Looks the goods! Congrats - sounds like a great deal. Didn't realise they don't have paddle shifters - that's unfortunate as it's nice to have the option to shift down a gear.

Roof and gutter type silicone would also work

Was it originally mounted with a tape or an adhesive?

if tape - then pretty much any external-rated mounting tape will work

if adhesive, then Selleys Plastics Glue - Household Adhesive | Selleys Australia (http://www.selleys.com.au/adhesives/household-adhesive/quick-fix-adhesive/plastics-glue/)

Looks to be a 1-2mm thick black DST. I just wasn’t sure of the the grade etc needed, don’t want to lose it down the track. I think I was lucky it came off in the driveway while washing.

Wife called me today from the weekly shopping center run, car had a warning light neither of us had seen before

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2019/06/d286ec6deba190b325c14bd6bc7de075-1.jpg

A quick little search showed it as emissions warning lamp. I told her to go straight to local dealer (under warranty)

Test came back as glow plug resistance on cyclinder 2 too high. Was removed and replaced. I have no idea if this is related to raspy sound issue. I have not test driven it yet to see if there has been a change.

Just posting here so I don’t forget it happened.

Bonus was they topped up the Ad Blue while it was in so I don’t have to worry about it.

Hi,
Has anyone tried 215/65r16 on passat alltrack B8 ?
I found this forum while google'ing whether they fit or cause trouble . I live in Europe and I already bought 16" wheels. I am in between getting 215/60r16 or 215/65r16 winter tyres.

PS. I've got the 2.0TSI 162Kw model , and 16" rim is a tight fit .

This mag wheel looks good as I would like to fit 4WD tyres to them as I don't have to worry about bumps or small potholes on the road.

Insurance could be another thing as they could knock back the claim for incorrect tyres.

Just been in a while ago for 75K Service, now at 78K we had the solid engine light come on. I was thinking the EGR system as thats what pops up in my T5.1 however we have been advised by local VW service that it's the waterpump failing. Is that unusual with such low KM for it's age?

Yes, they change the water pump at 75k or 90k regardless if it is faulty or not.

For Japanese cars, we only change it when it is faulty, for Euro cars change it as a prevention that it might break down.

I agree about the wheel size on Wolfies. After reading this thread and others, I have just replaced the 19" wheels fitted to mine with a set of used OEM 17x7 B8 Passat rims with 215/55R17 tyres which I found on ebay. I'm very happy with the result. Better ride, less bump steer, less jittery steering. I'll probably replace these tyres with 225/66R17's when these are worn out. The rolling diameter would then equal the 19" original tyres, give a slight increase in ground clearance, and perhaps even better ride.
Having read the above threads, I might have been even happier with 16" rims. Perhaps in the next life.

225/60R16 98Y is available in the Pirelli Cinturato P7 (Which is the same 19" tyre fitted to the wolfy and has the same load and speed index, so insurance should be fine as its the same rolling diameter). Might have issues fitting over the brakes?
