i havent had a ticket in over 7 years now (oops speaking too soon???).

Best piece of equipment you can use for avoiding tickets (after common sense) is yr eyes!!

always look long and you can see cars in front of you braking - a great sign that theres a multinova or a speed trap theyve just been through

my last fine was on 02/01/07, what a start of the year! It was for doing 51km/h over the limit, $1000 and 3 months suspension. I had my old car then, and since i got the R i had an occasional breath test but i haven't been pulled over yet (touch wood). I guess that everyone thinks that my car is just a Golf with big rims and that it can't really do much, but i left a few commonwhore drivers amazed :)
So be careful, make that your first and last ticket. Its not fun looking at your car parked in the garage for 3 months!

Sigh, speeding tickets.

Every year i get one, and without fail it is a couple of k's over wherever i am. eg 52 in a 50 zone, 63 in a 60. Every year without fail.

I do a lot of time on the road so its not too surprising but a very unsatisfying way to spend a hundred odd dollars and lose a demerit.

At least doing 50 over the limit or something you are actually well and truly in the wrong, for my tickets its like getting in trouble because your shirt is not tucked in.

sigh, speeding tickets.

Hmmm - I couldn't tell you how many tickets I've had over the years - particularly in my late teens, 20's and early/mid thirties (alright - most of my driving life).

Had my first one in over 4 years last month.

In some ways they are harder to avoid these days compared to the 80's and early 90's as there are so many more opportunities to get caught.

However the upside is that many of these are fixed (and therefore known) or (as in Qld) the white 4WD on the side of the road which are easy to pick.

And with the vastly increased number of cars on the road you are generally no longer a sitting target on your own. You are one fish in a much bigger school of fish so your chances of being picked on by the lone unmarked car or roadside handheld radar are much less.

Lucky you don't live in NSW, its 3 demerit points even if your only 2ks over the limit.

Are you for real? Thats nuts..... I can understand in a 40km zone with lots of little kids running around, but if thats the penalty for going a couple of clicks over in a 110 zone on the m4 when there isn't a car within a km of you..... I think it's a bit rich. Doesn't surprise me with this government though.

Might as well rob a bank now j:

I find that amazing. how come nobody has challenged that in court?

Australian Design Rules only require speedo accuracy to +/- 2.5kph, ie 50% of the mimimum measured increment. Therefore how can they fine you for travelling within the legal tolerance of a speedo. To top that off, yr tread depth on yr tyres will affect the accuracy of yr speedo by up to 5kph between new tyre and legal min tread depth.

they also completely ruined sydneys traffic by forcing people to use expensive tunnels which dont work simply for them to make under the table bribe money.

they also completely neglected the healthcare system, one of the most important things in our society.

oh and lets not forget that funding to public schools is an absolute joke; another integral part of our society.

Congrats with the fine.. :D

Here in perth there is a a long very busy road called stirling highway....

Its a 60km/h road... dual carraige and it is so bad to drive on... for the whole stretch of road there are so many times a car is turning on the right hand lane, and then busses on the left hand lane, then you get slow drivers on the right lane who will eventually in around 20 km time turn right....

So undertaking as its been called, has to be done.. you cannot sit behind these cars and then come to a complete stop as they turn off only then to be boxed in by every other car on the left lane...

Cars get stuck on the right lane (lots of oncoming traffic) and cars on the left lane have either busses or the constant left turners....

road design is so important yet for some reason a lot of roads are just done wrong.. Sometimes having to speed and overtake using the left lane (speed as in a couple of ks over...) is justified, even tho illigal... i dunno if you get what im trying to say....

I just think sometimes no matter how good and safe a driver you are the cops will fine you for something as stupid as being 2km over while overtaking a truck sitting on the right hand lane using the left lane...

Oh and who thought putting an on ramp joined to an off ramp of a freeway would be a good idea?

On busy days everyone getting on the freeway has to try and squeez to the right lane to get on the freeway and all those exiting the freeway have to get onto the left lane which which meens all the cars have to cross into each other.. If you cant change lanes you either get stuck on the freeway or dont get on the freeway. stupid design... but probably saved a bit of money

i got my first speeding fine the other day too, happened at the start of jan tho, i was in the city, and apparently it's 50 kmh on flinders street, which I didn't know, 1 point and 140 bucks. I might contest it, cause it's a major street and I wasn't deliberatly speeding, I honestly thought it was a 60 zone, but then again, I donno if I can be bothered. oh well. I'll have a look in more detail on monday. and I was going so well to...

In queensland its 50km in built up areas unless signed. Though most places have 60 signs everywhere, the absence of signs means 50 (esp in city). Prob same there, i'd say your boned.

They changed it from an open speed limit to 130km/h on Jan 1, 2007(As a counter to the road toll they said), but did nothing to the DUI laws:mad:(0.05 to 0.08: on the spot fine, and you can go...>0.08: off to court you go...).
The road toll was the highest this year in 5 or 6 years, with drunk drivers making up the majority of the deaths...Speeding wasn't second...n:
Still, this didn't stop my dad reaching the sunny side of the double ton plus a couple of score more on the way up from Sydney(In the NT)...Even had a very cool police officer compliment me on the car, and apologise for holding us up. All this after dad was pulled up for doing 110km in a 110 zone while overtaking the cop car who was sitting 10 under the limit(I had the GPS on, which is way more accurate than the Polo speedo)...But what really got our goat was that he pulled us up 30 min after we overtook him. After pointing this out, and that he had no way of proving that we were speeding(He was in a Nissan Patrol), he put his book away, and told us to take care:???: I know he has a job to do, but sometimes there is no excuse for the stuff he pulled, and he was just wasting both or time.

The problem with "speed kills" is that current "driver education" is poor at best.

Advanced driver education is proven to work and yet the authorities choose to ignore it.

instead of upping the skill-set of the general population, we prefer to lower the bar, and and then fine those who choose to exceed it (and the fact that governments thrive off the proceeds doesnt help either!!)

In light of the fact there is a large part of the population out there who will never be able to exceed a higher set bar, I think the only realistic solution out there is to set the bar higher, and exterminate all those who dont clear it. At least these deaths wont be caused by speedingj:

Hehehehehe...I like that last bit...The sad truth is that as much as the government goes on about the Road Toll and Speeding, they arn't going to endorse much about Safe Driving Courses because they are making so much money out of speeding drivers...Call me cynical:D

You are right on.As long as they make money from the roadside 'cash registers' they will remain & possibly they will make up some implausable excuse to put up more cash registers....eg ants crossing the road... Ive only 2 points left. 66 in 60 zone(on a long w/end) & 47 in a school zone so watch out B

I'm over the s**t they are pulling on drivers now...I think if they upped the speed limit on some FWY/HWY to 130 to 150(look at the 90km zones on the M2/M4/M7), the 60/80km zones on the UPGRADED Great Western HWY through the mountains, and get the school zones off them(Who remembers the 80km most of the way thought the mountains when it was only 2 lanes and no school zones!!). The western roads of NSW and NW roads of VIC should be 130km, not 110...Its a proven fact in Europe and the US that higher road speeds save lives, not take them.

Ahh but Blitzen, I think you'll find that in European countries, the driver training is better as well/

Here in Perth, we are absolutely brilliant at 3 point turns, and correct me if i'm wrong here, but I suspect that nobody has ever been killed when a 3 point turn went horribly wrong!!

Road quality on the 130km/h roads is incredible. Also, you have to pay like 20EURO to use them for a couple hundred ks. I'd prefer 110 with no stupid tolls.

Mischa
12-02-2008, 12:07 PM
you have to pay like 20EURO to use them for a couple hundred ks.

how is this in the slightest different to the situation we have in sydney?

most of australia's major freeways are actually in pretty good nic. when driving at night with no1 on the road you'll find you can easily go 150 without feeling like your gonna be shaken off the road...

i say get some descent driver training, regain the public's confidence by making REALISTIC speed limits (not 50km/h on a 6 lane major road ffs) and then start making long stretches of freeway 130 or 150.

Cygnus
12-02-2008, 01:40 PM
Well, I say we get rid of speed limits all together! I mean, then maybe drivers will actually have to assess the road conditions and make their own judgment about how fast they should be going for the conditions!

Most people take the speed limits given as the minimum speed they should be driving, not the maximum anyways. n: That's the main cause of accidents, as people assume no matter what the road conditions are, they just drive to the speed limit. On top of that, we spend more time looking for school zone signs, speed sign, speed cameras  and looking at our speedos instead of concentrating on other hazards on the road!

So get some proper driver training, and get rid of the speed limits, and we'll all drive a lot better! :D
