whey guys

a mate of mine had catastrophic turbo failure on a 42celsius day on the highway, broken turbo shaft...

he had just had 5w-30 penrite enviro put in with new filter a few days earlier... car only has 70k km on the clock, had both of the recalls attended to ? presumably the software stuff in 2013 and another recall in jan 2018 ...

I am new to this engine but am gonna help out by swapping in a new CHRA I think the housings are ok enough. there is some compressor wheel debris that I hope has only made it as far as the intercooler which I will empty out and I will also check and clean the turbo inlet and return oil lines to make sure they're ok.. i'll cut open the oil filter and check for debris from the crank in case the oil pressure loss or perhaps the hot 42c day caused oil breakdown and lunched the whole motor..

Anyone else had turbo failures likes this at low mileage... ??

maybe a lot of city driving or hot shutdowns or a lot of idling or maybe it wsa turbine side heat stress from the lean engine problem i've read about ? dunno

heres a vid for your entertainment

Addit: i've just read a few threads where people talk about the extended oil change intervals being to blame, they did a road test for 60k km with VW recommended service intervals then pulled the engine down and the turbo was damaged from excessive deposit formation due to oil breakdown and high temps

Hey Mate,
I own a 2011 118tsi and have done a little bit of reading and have not heard of turbo failure, but given the many problems this car has i am not surprised. I have heaps of problems driving my car on hot days as I get next to no power from the supercharger as I think the magnetic clutch struggles to engage the supercharger in the heat. I have heard of many failed supercharger clutches but not turbos, but in saying that I am definitely not an expert by any stretch of the imagination.
I too run the same 5W-30 enviro in my car and have had no issues.
Best of luck with the repairs!

I’m not surprised.
Though the VW is/was also saying that if you drive under severe driving conditions change the engine oil more often. They’re also very specific what severe driving conditions are.

I can get melett CHRA's for very reasonable price from the UK about $280 aud shipped but the problem is the compressor housing has damage which means I probably need to replace that ... ALSO that means that there is aluminium dust through the whole intake and probably in the engine too... with any luck most is stuck in all the oil that is in the intake but I think I need to pull teh whole intake and flush out with degreaser to try and rid it of aluminium dust, literally the most abrasive thing that could possibly be in the intake :(

I haven't read the actual words in a while but I recall thinking that their explanation covered pretty much everything. I'll have to dig out the manual and have another read.

ok so chatted to a few turbo experts, even though the compressor housing is a bit damaged it should be fine to run.. I will order a CHRA and replace all the o rings in the turbo lines and flush them out brush them out make sure thye arent coked. I will also clean out the interoocler piping and intercooler and hopefully thats as far as the debris has made it.

can someone explain to me, is this model the one with the charge cooler i nthe intake manifold or does it have an intercooler, I only see 2 radiators one I assume to be the air con..

the other question is where does the piping go from turbo outlet? to intake manifold or to supercharger?

new turbo is in

pulled the intercooler piping to flush out all the aluminium debris

found nearly 2 litres of oil in the bottom of the intercooler from the turbo failure, the good thing about this is all that oil caught most of the aluminium

have to pull the intercooler now to drain and flush it properly
