I'm not old enough to know about the rally, but was old enough to catch the first two across the line - Fury, Bond - in action in the ATCC in the 80s as a young fan.

I was service crew at the '78 Cross.

I think this was the rally where they had to refuel mid stage on one section due to the length of it.
