Anyone know if there’s a impossible hardware incompatibility to upgrade the current 3AA980654D sensor to 3Q0980654H which is the newer one used in the b8 passats and arteons. Will the current BCM reject the unit? What I’m aiming to achieve is better lane detection from non painted lines, from the white reflectors on our Australian roads.

Yes you can install the B8 front camera.
Will need some custom 3d printed adapters as the new camera is a different shape and has different mounts.
You also need to run the calibration routine with the new camera using the proper calibration board and ODIS.

Has anyone done this before and are there any guides available? What about the steering sensors and BCM, are they compatible? Would be great if this is possible as my car is running the gen 1 sensors[emoji42]

Yes it's been done before.
I am going to install one in my car at some point soon (B6).
Steering angle sensor is not affected.
ABS wheel speed sensors again are not affected, but you can replace the rears with B7 version as long as you have a B7 ABS module (3AA xxx xxx part) and then change the coding to match.

Do you know if adaptive lane guidance would be available after the upgrade? Also where would I find the schematics and required connectors for the upgrade.

The plug is the same, but the camera housing itself is different.
So it won't attach to the existing mount on the windscreen.
I don't think adaptive lane guidance will work, you might just get a better performing camera in terms of traffic sign recognition and lane identification etc

Would the OEM camera housing for the B8 fit possibly instead of having to 3D print one?

No the housing is part of the windscreen.
It might be possible to remove a b8 one from the screen without destroying it but it's not a part that is available separately.

So this item from eBay, 3q0980654h VW GOLF VII 7 (bq1) facel. Front Camera Camera Fahrerassistenzsysteme | eBay (https://m.ebay.com.au/itm/3q0980654h-VW-GOLF-VII-7-bq1-facel-Front-Camera-Camera-Fahrerassistenzsysteme-/153069921155)
Then a 3D printed housing.
And some factory calibration...
Then we have a upgraded FAS unit?
Wouldn’t the housing be glued on the windshield on the CC’s as well?
Wish someone had written or recorded their progress [emoji31]

Use Google translate:

Have my camera, wiring harness, heater mat and adapter mounts.
Waiting on a few trim pieces from VW but they are just to hide the cabling and camera, won't hold up the installation.
New windscreen should be installed over the weekend then I'll need to run the calibration routines and do some testing!http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/08/34b724ee48cb95de4536d3aa3af58f28-1.jpghttp://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/08/098b45c31072e5720f22e7ab16d695ea-1.jpg

Are you installing this on a Passat that doesn’t have he front camera assist installed already?
Would you also be able to provide the part numbers of the cables heater mats etc.
Did you get the camera used from eBay, the camera parts don’t have VIN identification right?

Yes my car is a B6 and doesn't have any camera at all currently.

You can see the part numbers in the photos for the camera and heater mat.
This is the harness:
Lane assist Lane keeping system Wire/cable/Harness For Golf 7 MK7 Passat B8 MQB CARS-in Car Stickers from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Lane-assist-Lane-keeping-system-Wire-cable-Harness-For-Golf-7-MK7-Passat-B8-MQB-CARS/32852067580.html)

The camera can be second hand, but it has to be calibrated using ODIS and the right calibration board which also encodes the VIN into the camera.

So I wouldn’t need the heater mat or the wiring harness if I have the lane assist installed already but mine is the 3AA series.
What about the 3D printed mounting brackets for the camera? How are you managing with those?

If you already have a camera its a straight swap, apart from the difference in the mount.
You can see the yellow 3d printed adapters in the camera module photo. A friend of mine in Europe had them made and sent them to me along with the camera and heater mat.

The heater mat is 3G0 862 505 right?
Would it be possible to buy the 3D printed mounts from you?

I'll see if I can get some more made up sure.
You then will need to either go to a dealer or get the calibration board made up and run through the procedure with ODIS.

Installed and working.
Just waiting on new trim pieces to cover it all up.http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/08/9d3f983a53d89879113aeb73b546ca7a-1.jpghttp://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/08/360069523a4d84a45f906d1108cb81ae-1.jpghttp://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2018/08/9c860ac57c1687c17aa3bebab42ca6c1-1.jpg

Traffic signs work with the Australian map? I thought functionality would be limited again. Is it because it’s a camera from European vehicle?

It gives an error saying limited but it works fine.
