Haha yeah. Been off the forums for a while and back on to investigate whether I wait for Mk8 or go 7.5 in a year’s time.

After a one year sabbatical, I am back.
And kicking off with one of the early Mk8 Golfs with ABT FR-C in 20", mystic black and 235/30 tyres, and ABT springs with around a 25-30mm drop on stock.

Mk5 drivers be like.. Mk6 is crap.
Mk6 drivers be like.. Mk7 is crap.
Mk7 drivers be like.. you get the drill.
I came across a picture of the 2013 Golf Vision the other day again - it looked 'futuristic' at the time - and yet you can see the key elements are in the Mk8.
I still don't think a Golf sits well on 20s unless it is slammed, but overall this look an inch down would certainly be pretty slick.

I tend not to post mock-ups, but I'll bend now. This is a styling exercise by German tuner JMS showing off their body work design for the Mk8 with 19" Barracuda Tzunamee EVO wheels - which reminds me of something off a early 2000s Falcodore.

Interesting looking rear diffuser and exhaust tips very Audi RSesque.
May not be that different to the R in the end though - while persisting with the quad pipes the diffuser look is a lot stronger. If it wasn't an RS3 rip I'd actually prefer single 'wheelbarrow' ovals each side..

Likely the first of the dropped Mk8s, from Nullbar. I believe it ran a bit of a 'Frankenstein' set up with FAHRWairk, KW dampers and Air Lift controls. Of more interest is the sweet OZ Superturismo in the Evoluzione finish (red 'centrelock' finish) in 20 x 8.5 ET45.

Wagon Wednesday Mk8 style - admittedly on a sad looking set of small stock wheels. Unfortunately the search for practicality, aka space, has resulted in a more challenging looking design for Mk8, akin to the Mk7 days, unlike the relatively attractive Mk7 effort.

I suspect in a better spec, lower ride and different colour it will still be a decent looking thing.

All these lowered cars look awful imo. I can’t stand the look of the top of the wheels being covered. It’s deformed & impractical.
I’m also very fussy with wheels & tend to think VW do a great job with their selections (GTI/R).
Dutch77
11-08-2020, 08:08 AM
It is definitely not to everyone's tastes.
Keep in mind most of these are on air rather than static, so practicality is not compromised - and a lot are only sitting this low for show/pics.
With all the Mk8 delays viz electric gremlins and pandemics very few people have actually modified the new cars thus far. IMO the Mk8 has continued VW's trend of OEM wheel design getting worse and worse.. if I jump to a Mk8 one day I will almost certainly be carrying my OZ over. :)

I think it will take some time but the GTI in particular looks pretty good.
As per the Mk7 (besides the extra pipes on the R) the GTI generally has more visuals.

We don't have a working name yet but it looks like these will form part of the stock R wheels given they've been snapped a few weeks ago on the mule and now on the production line:
49787
49788
49789
VW will definitely be keeping the after market manufacturers in business.
EDIT - no, the wheels on the mule look (slightly) better because they are a (slightly) different design. Odd..
Dutch77
17-08-2020, 03:12 PM
Most of the earlier Mk8 GTI pics featured the bottom design, yet another yawn inducing play on the original Mk7 Austin; however the actual GTI tests have mostly featured the wheel in the first three pics.. which is still overstyled compared to the VW classics but actually not too bad. These look to be the 19" option, while the yawn fest look to be the 18" choice. Time will tell.

The wagon follows the hatch design, with a slope on the roof larger than the one on the bridge over the river Kok.. not buying it in mule form but let's see the actual final product.

Can't argue with that.
I've espoused the view many times we should be able to spec 19" Pretorias in silver or black on the R at least, if not the mid-level TCR GTI Mk8 model for ~$2k. I haven't checked lately but for years it was possible to spec them in Europe for an extra EUR 1,000 (over Cadiz/Spielbergs). I might be wrong but I suspect there'd be a lot of boxes ticked here, VW Aus makes money and everyone is happy.

Just receive my new Golf R.
My first impression is the car is even better that I was expecting! It is really amazing and everything that you heard about driving the Golf R, it is true!
My complain is about the UX. I am not talking about the screen or the touch elements but about behaviors that I was expecting more.
- Example: I can not set the default drive mode. Every time that I start the car, it moves to “Sport Mode”. The sport mode is fantastic but not for a daily drive. The steering heavy and the hard suspension is really not what I am expecting for my day by day. I can keep changing it every day, but it is a very bad experience.
I am reporting this to VW quality team.
I believe if 5 more people send an email asking for them to allow us to set the default "drive mode", they can do it by a software update very quickly.
If you agree and can help me, please send an email to Mayra C. at vwcustomercare@vw.com
Thank you
