Hi just wondering if anyone has had any experiences with having a roof rack & box on their Tiguan? I've just ordered a Thule box, racks and bike holder. I'm asking because the sales man at the dealership said stay away from volkswagen original roof rack, I didn't get a chance to ask him why. Happy to share pics when I finally receive and install.

Can't comment on the Tiguan, but on my Passat (and previous Passat's) I have always used Thule products.
I have Thule WingBar Edge Roof Racks and a Thule Touring L 780 (Gloss Black) 420L Roof Box.

Both complement the car very well!!!

As for the salesman at the dealership, I am surprised that he turned down a sale...

The genuine VW racks are Thule I believe, as are the roof boxes in the accessories catalogue.

Ok, thanks for the info ope126. Was there much noise when you had the rack and roof box on? Highway and street driving? I've gone with the same thule edge bars, apparently they are the quieter racks. Looking forward to fitting these on the Tiguan.

Yeah the dealer did miss out actually. I guess he didn't rate them.

Just got back from a 4,000km trip in September and off on another 4,000km trip in December.
Minimal intrusion of noise.
The main times it becomes an issues is when it gets windy, but in all honesty you know it is there; but its not an issue.

I take the racks off when not needed. When they are on, there is really no additional noise.

We had the Roof Box fully loaded and I think that plays on its noise levels too.

All in all, we could not do without them!!!

Boot space in Tiguan is ok but having extra space is ideal!

I hired a Thule roof box for a recent trip to the snow. First trip with our Passat so wasn't sure how we'd go with all the gear. The roof box made packing wet boards and gear a breeze and kept the smell out of the cabin. As far as noise it was barely discernible from highway noise. Fuel consumption only went up 0.2L/100 over standard which was a bonus. Box was one of the higher end streamlined versions with the double sided entry and sliding clamps which made adjustment a breeze.

Nice Passat!! My gf has one and they're just amazing!

No I believe they sit a little higher but there’s still not enough clearance to open the sunroof. They look good better than the standard height ones though. That’s the trade off.

Sad face guys, the racks I got are too short so I have to send them back for longer ones. Even though I used the fit my vehicle on the site I ordered from.

Gutted! Oh well, just have to wait bit longer...

Did you ever find out why your dealership didnt recommend the VW original roof rack? I assume you mean cross bars?

As someone said before, they're just rebadged Thule stuff.

Observations: no additional noise with the racks and box at 100kph.

With only the roof racks, there is a slight humming noise from 60kph onwards.

Overall it's useful if U do a lot of road trips especially for those with kids. The only pain in the back side is storing this huge sucker when not in use.

Pretty useful when road tripping though, cant wait to hit the road in a couple of weeks.

Post a photo of how U store it in Ur garage [emoji106]

Here’s a suggestion.

I’ve been using roof boxes for years with the A6 Allroad and agree, the biggest pain is what to do with the bloody things when you don’t need em.

Here’s what I did.

Bought two bike lifts, not sure what they’re called, but they’re designed to lift a push bike off the ground and store it. They came from ALDI so cheap as.

Made up a timber frame and attached it to the roof of the car port with a couple of brackets.

Screwed the bike lifts to the frame.

Back the car under.

Disconnect the roof racks from the car.

Lift the whole lot, roof box with racks attached, to the roof.

Easy peasy.

I’ve added a couple of occy straps underneath just in case the ropes let go and drop the whole lot on the car.

When it comes to putting the box back on I just lower it down to just above roof level, back the car underneath, lower it the last little bit and attach to the car. A one man operation.

Just be careful you don’t leave the car under while you’re doing the bulk of the lifting/lowering as the possibility exists that you could drop it on the car.

I was thinking of hanging the box on the side wall using a heavy duty hook and straps.

But I like how U have maximised space and its non intrusive.

Awesome idea!!

I don't have much of a garage, just a car port and shed so my shed will have to house my box for the time being.

Looks like you may have made a cheaper version of the Thule system.

Thule MultiLift 572004 - Thule Australia (https://www.thule.com.au/products/roof-boxes/thule-multilift-572000/)

The bastards stole my idea.

I remember looking around for a solution like this years ago but there was nothing around. I’m certain these Thule Multilifts weren’t thought of back then.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Truth be told though this Thule solution is probably better as it’s been designed for the purpose. With mine I have to lift and lower in stages all the while keeping it level. If it gets out of level I could drop it.

I remember looking at it as a solution a few years ago but there were clearance issues - my old Yeti wouldn't fit through the garage door with the box on top.
