View Full Version : Rotisserie

Finally after months of neglect I am able to get back to the mk1 Rally Project
I was thinking of making a rotisserie style “golf-holder” so I can easily play with the shell without straining myself too badly. You can see ths kind of thing I mean at http://www.prepfab.co.uk/Preparation/pages/mk2shell_jpg.htm (CAUTION extreme drool inspiring site).
My question is: Are the bumper mounting points on the front and rear chassis rails strong enough to take the weight of a stripped mk1??? It would be easy to make up a “fork” style bracket to pick up the mounting points and use that as the cross piece…. Any thoughts guys???

I use a towbar attached to the back mounting points as a jacking point to change the back axle and fuel tank. Front should be strong enough I reckon.

It was your sugestion about the tow bar that got me thinking... other options like using suspension mounting points are fine.. except when you want to fit the suspension :P
One of the guys at the english mk1 site (http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk) made up this trick frame on casters which allowed him to move the shell around and even flip it onto it's side for working on the floorpan. It DID use the suspension mounting points front and rear, so I am thinking that maybe a combination of the two ideas may be the go.

Hi bluerex, its Steve, Beths boyfriend. I knew I would end up running into you on a forum. Hows the project going? My little 2 was forced into a 90deg gutter by a flacon in the right lane of a roundabout who decided to exit in the left lane. BBS rim damaged, but has been repaired, otherwise, $5500 repair bill for the other driver. Mk2 will be back on the road sometime next month hopefully.

The rotisserie thing sounds pretty awesome. Updates? Where are you at? Worked out what to do for an engine? Still going carbs? Got the roll cage in yet?

HeHe, Hi Steve :P
What a bummer about the 2! Had a similar experience with my alfa several years back (run off the road by a granny on her way to hospital  )
Hope she gets better soon(the golf... granny was fine).

The litle brown golf is a work in (slow) progress.

I managed to get the all the windows out with both glass AND rubbers intact WAHOO!!!!

Really glad I did get the glass out as it revealed some potentially nasty rust, easily killed at this stage.

Pics are too big for my 56K modem... Have to look at work tomo. Do you really own all those cars on your sig? I knew about the forester and rex.
Cheers Charles.

Sorry for hogging the bandwidth.
The sig is pretty accurate, you could add the Audi 100 Avant that brother chris is driving, we bought it for him - he is doing the time payment thing :P
The Seat is for sale... hey does Beth want new wheels???????????

What do you mean new wheels? As in Wheels, or a new car? I dont think we would trade the Vento on a Cordoba. Bethy loves her Vento even if she never gets to drive it....

Would not want to break up a relationship like that :D
Funnily enough, Peter said exactly the same thing this afternoon....
Anyhow, I have added pics to the for sale post, or hit http://www.malamovers.com/manage/site.php?id=89 to see more on my site.

Cheers

The Seat, unfortunately is one car too many :(
Damn shame because she is a real fun drive and super cheap to run (brother Chris got 40mpg on his trip accross from Adelaide)

Made the tough decision NOT to modify the Subies, paid off when I traded my 02 rex (on an 05 of course) and got 73% of original price after 3 years :) :) :) :). At least I can keep up with Kelly in the XT now :P

Wanna buy a Cordoba????

Hehe! Well both actually  :P

As for the flares, they are legal for classic rally events, but not for the more common state and national P2 class. So I am thinking of making 2 sets of front guards, given how fast they can be swapped, it should not be a problem picking the right set for the event. Rears can just be bolted on as the original wheel opening is good enough (the fronts need to be chopped out to suit the flares) The question now is just how CAMS will feel about it. Think I will have a chat to the guys that have build the FIAT Abath - stunning car, lots of fibre-glass extensions.
