I have a Polo GTI, brand new and I've got a big sub and amp from my old car's stereo. Is it easy to connect (and have decent control over the sound) to the stock head unit? I'd get it done professionally, just want to know if it's worth it.

I'm still saving up the last ounces of money to upgrade my speakers, and i've got what you've got right now and it sounds pretty good for stock lol! It's not too hard to do..main toughie is amp battery cable through the engine firewall and the tucking away of speakers
the rest is....basically....plug and fiddle and play

IF you can.. Fo it, really depends if the OEM head unit have RCA out put or if your Amp support speaker wire as input.

i got a polo gti. the amp to battery is pretty easily done... there's a hole at the front left passenger side that you can cut a little hole (its a rubber gourmet), to pull the power cable through. i put my amp in the boot.

the polo's standard stereo does not have RCA out, but what you can do is to get a LCC to "tap" into the rear speaker wires for the sub, and similarly, tap into the front speakers into the amp.

i been told that polo's speaker wire is 16 gauge. so, before you buy some expensive speaker wire kit. it's good to know that you can just use the old ones....i learn that the hard way.

pm me if you need more help.

questions you should ask yourself are ones such as whether you will be upgrading the rest of the system at a leter date, what sirt of power your current sub/amp combo has etc etc

if you arent planning to spend any more on the system in the future and your standard HU does not have the required RCA outputs you will have to get some line converters to convert the speaker outputs from your HU to RCA and then run your amps that way. although most amps these days have the inputs on them which allow direct conncetion of speaker outputs to the amplifier

this route generally leaves a big window of opportunity for losses in sound quality etc etc, so it may be worthwhile looking at upgrading your HU. a few entry units have multiple RCA out which makes things easier for you

also would have the advantage of giving you 'Sub Control' direct from the HU

just some thoughts :)

Well the stereo I have includes JVC LH-2000 (http://www99.epinions.com/JVC_KD_LH2000_Arsenal_Series_CD_MP3_Receiver_Car_S tereos_Changers) headunit (front, rear and sub RCA), 2 channel Cadence amp (for fronts, don't remember the model), TS-D160R (http://www.autosound.co.nz/products.php?startcat=000025&product_id=000053) speakers a Coustic 401DB (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-n7eBeyCPSJ2/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=611401DB) amp with a 13" JL sub (http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs.php?series_id=17). I'd really rather not cut the dash up to put my head unit in, despite it being pretty dam good. I really only want to put the sub in unless stock sounds like crap.

I'm going to Maroochy Car Sound to get it fitted, they are one of the best in Australia, so I guess I'll see what they say.

I did this with my toyota echo, bought a 6" sub for $30, and god damn it SO good! was thinking of buying a 8" sub for $200 :( luckily i didn't. if it has the RCA then it would make the whole installation easier n quicker.

i have a MkV golf with a 12' sony xplod 1000w sub and a random amp i have no idea about
took it to jb for them to install and its awesome
only problem i nearly had which im not really sure how to explain but he had to run it from the 12v charger in the front
so it only works when the car is on
if you have the car off and the stereo on the sub doesnt work
i dunno if its the same in polos

I'm looking at doing the same thing. However I'll also be amping up the front stage. Im getting one of these (see link below) with the option sub controller.http://www.mobileaudiocontrol.com/product.asp?Product_Id=222456&d_Id=17612&l1=17612&l2=

Seems something like that gives you some control over sub volume, and doesnt loose sound quality. That said that alone is about $300-400.
