as above. There are no audio controls.

The wheel is the same size... thicker in most areas with a flat bottom.
It's a straight swap, using the original airbag/horn component. Takes about 10mins to change over.
edit: The wheel looks huge in the photo because I had it pulled right out for the install.

Hmm, has anybody priced one of these through VW locally?
If they have them we may even be able to arrange one of those group buy thingies if enough people are interested.

I'd imagine to buy from VW Aust it would be extremely expensive and I'm sure there'd be questions asked as to why you are buying a Golf wheel.
Warranty would be out the window...

I naturally expect expensive, but cannot see why warranty would be out the window if it fits - if it's alright for the Flog...
If asked why it's wanted, the simple answer is that it's a better wheel than what the Polo has fitted.
I miss my lovely, chunky MINI wheel and would love one of these.

Hi guys,
Yep 99 euros plus shipping. The seller didn't ship to Oz to I had them ship it to a mate who lives in Berlin and he shipped it to me for 37euro. The cheapest I can see them for now is double that... :?
I'm sure it's authentic VW, it has the VW logo and serials embossed inside.
It was a perfect, fit.... install was done by a mate. All you need is a screw driver, and a hex (??) bit.
You turn the wheel 90 degrees to the left and you can get in the back with the screw driver to unclick the horn/airbag... then 90 the other way and do the same. The horn/airbag will then come out a bit and you'll be able to unclip the electrics.
Then use the hex (??) bit to remove the wheel. 15mins max.

Goodness gracious! :(
Out of interest I just rang a local VW parts place.
Rough quote of $1300 (j:) and yes, that's just the outer!
They also confused the matter by saying there are different models - despite my making it clear it was the GTI steering wheel, which AFAIK only comes in the one colour.
I'm sure there are people here much more savvy in finding parts at sane prices - anybody care to have a try? :)

To be honest mate, I hope the bastard I bought it from gets hit by a car.
I think he was upset the auction only got to 99 that he held on to it for a while then messaged me saying it got returned because the address I gave was incorrect, then held it at ransom for 13 more euros before he would attempt delivery again! Since then he raised his starting price on his auctions.

they are selling the golf 30th ed (red stitching) steering wheel for around $505AUD but they do group buy's so might be able to do better.

I agree, it is a bit expensive, but the thicker gti wheel does feel alot better... ask the girls!!

but if you're french, you'd think its more important than performance
PogoAmy
02-04-2008, 05:48 PM
$500 is the ballpark for decent aftermarket steering wheels like Momo, so I don't think it's outrageous for this wheel. $1300 is.
If you did a side-by-side comparison you'd see an immense difference in the wheels - yep, from my experience girth matters! ;)

Does the wheel go straight on, fit perfectly, etc?
Such a nice mod. I hate my dodgy plastic steering wheel. It lets the interior down :(
I would be interested in both the audio interface and group buy - who's looking into this, know who sells the steering wheel so cheap? PM would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does any1 know if theres going to be any complications with the airbag? in terms of fitting the steering wheel?

VW OEM MK5 GTI Edition 30 steering wheel
The steering wheel is a real OEM VW part, not an imitation or replica, comes brand new with original guarantee. It will be imported from Berlin, Germany.
Current price is $505AUD - once I get a decent list of people I will organise a group buy quote.
It's a straight swap, using the original airbag and horn.
If you want to be added to the group buy list please PM me

Depends on what kind of deal we can get with the group buy :) I'm hoping for a BIG discount.

03-04-2008, 01:43 PM
You know for around $500 you can get a SEAT intake, a K&N filter AND a FORGE TIP. Easliy worth 10kw combined chipped or not....... and you want to replace a perfectly working steering wheel for that .....
PogoAmy
03-04-2008, 02:06 PM
Why is it so hard for some to understand that an extra kw here or there isn't the be-all and end-all for everybody here?
My Pogo has more than enough power to get my licence in big trouble already, yet I find the steering wheel a letdown having had better in past vehicles. Hence improving that is more appealing to me than changing air intakes, filters and other messy things. ;)
I'm concerned some around here would rather spend very their last cents on performance bits and pieces and then get a credit deal on $50 Bob Jane generic tyres. :o
Cheers!

A thought re: the steering wheels with audio buttons.
Does any model Polo have these installed as standard anywhere in the world?
If not, I'd think it very unlikely the wiring would be pre-existing for it - fair assumption?
Obviously if the wiring is hidden away in the loom on them all I'd go for the buttoned one. :)
Cheers!

I think everyone should be free to spend their hard earned dollars on whatever they want.
For some it may be a nice steering wheel.
For others it may be a kinky romp with nazi hookers.
Who are we to judge?
Just for a laugh. can someone ring a dealer and ask them how much a replacement golf GTI steering wheel is worth?

Amy - From memory there's nothing to plug the milifunction controls in, I'll confirm tonight as the wheel is coming off (just to get straightened up a few mm).

How much time do any of you actually spend looking at the steering wheel while you're driving ?
If it is more than a few split seconds a trip you are creating more of a danger than any performance modifications ever could have done.
You should be concentrating on driving and looking at the road and NOT at your Golf GTI (or Polo ) steering wheel .......
BTW ... Nobody who actually took the time and money to add choice performance mods to their cars would even remotely consider fitting anything other than the best possible tyres .... see a number of other threads for that.
But As Tim said, to each his own and if a Golf GTI steering wheel floats your boat by all means get one and enjoy it regardless of what other may think.
Personally I like the look as well but it's not worth more than $200 to me....

Huh?!!!
I spend virtually no time LOOKING at my steering wheel whilst driving.
I do, however, spend a hell of a lot of time HOLDING it whilst I'm driving.
If you haven't gleaned by now that an upgrade such as this is desirable to some here due to FEEL rather than looks then I don't know what more can be said, Sharkie.
We're not all way-to-go-mates who want to replace every single piece of our engines, exhausts and suspensions. You have every right to do as much, but you have no right to give grief to those who don't share your depth of modification passion. The same way people such as myself, from the latter camp, have no right to give you grief for wanting to change whatever you want.

ok calm down kids.. I have just been in touch with TM Tuning in Berlin and hope to get a call before 1am with a group buy price.
..I think that we all need to remember that we bought the polo for different reasons. I am the same as amy - I believe the car is as fast as it needs to be for what I need - and anyone, like me who has the leather pack obviously isn't serious about performance.
Plus.. unless you live in NT you cant drive any quicker than 110 anyway. and if its just for "track days" I can think of better cars to buy..

Yes, seen it before. He is quite funny but as someone pointed out to me on this forum a while ago, not a serious journalist before (when I referred to a different article of his) but rather an entertainer.
I still like him because he is not afraid to say things that comes to mind, even if they are stupid things at times.....:)
VW did not actually limit the Polo to 110kw because it thought it could not handle anymore.... The Polo Cup with no real changes other than a different bodykit and bigger wheels and 132kw is testament to that... but probably because it 1.) knew that at 110kw the engine would last a very long time and 2.) with more power would steal sales from the Golf GTI due to the price difference which is quite substantial in all markets they are both offered in the world.

$500 for 10kw?
Pot.kettle.black.
Polo GTI is plenty fast :) I dare say, my match is quick enough for our overpoliced roads - would love some more torque though. :(
I don't think it's fair to simply dismiss Jeremy Clarkson as an "entertainer", he's clearly learnt a thing or two about cars along the way. While not everyone may agree with his assessment of the Polo GTI, he makes a valid point about pushing the car way beyond its design brief and limitations, eg chassis, FWD, weight distribution, brakes etc.
He does, however, completely contradict himself at the end of the article .."So instead of buying a £13,000 Mini Cooper, go for an £11,000 Mini One — which is exactly the same — and then pay someone with an Oedipus complex a hundred quid or so to change the map". So it's ok to chip a Mini, but not a Pog
I suspect he had some supercars to drive and review that week and had little time (or interest) in writing a definative review of the Polo GTI.

Hey .... I did not refer to him as an entertainer intitially, but when I dared support his review of the 1.4TSI GT in the MK5 forum, I was told in no uncertain terms that he was ... j:
He certainly is very opinionated and do not necessarily have an open mind about many cars. I also suspect he prefers supercars to driving little hatches for unbaised reviews..... :D
but when I dared support his review of the 1.4TSI GT in the MK5 forum, I was told in no uncertain terms that he was :D
ha ha ha
Yeah and I don't reckon Jeremy has sleepless nights wondering how a bang-for-buck FMIC could be developed for the Polo GTI either :D
Speaking of which, are you going to get your FMIC tested, eg dyno, pressure tested. Your desciption of the difference is a little lacking mate ;)
When I put the APR FMIC on, I didn't know what to expect. When I drove it, I felt a massive amount of extra grunt coming through, and it felt so strong. Got it dynoed at gave an extra 12.5kw atw (as well as levelling out the AFR). Performance was more consistent too, despite the weather (hot or cold temps).
Sharkie
04-04-2008, 10:57 AM
Driving it after the FMIC went on yesterday reminded me of the time I drove APR's red Polo (with the works) . 1st impression was holy s#$t......
Don't want to make any other predictions, will wait for tomorrow's Brisbane dyno day to see how it stacks up....
BTW Guy's MK5 GTI stage III will be there as well ...... :D

It's just the English stroking off about the mini again. j:
Actually - all Clarkson's pointing out is that the Mini One (not sold here) and the Mini Cooper are the same car, besides the different ECU tune. Same chassis, same engine, (probably?) the same tyres, even.
With the Polo GTI, he's suggesting that sticking more power under the bonnet might expose some handling deficiencies. Let's be fair here - with the amount of people with the aftermarket Whiteline swaybars on this forum alone, he's probably got a point.

How much will shipping be, how much will the price be in euros just so it can be set in stone really would they be able to take the price down further? I've looked around and it seems thats about the right price. But yeah, we wouldn't want them checking our posts either ;)
Also the difference between 5 and 10 is not that much. And either is not much different from the individual price. So i guess unless they make a significant discount it would make more sense to buy it individually at our own leisure and im sure some people would be able to get better deals on shipping or get someone to get it back from germany with them or something.

We will be happy to offer you a group buy deal.
However, I will have to say right away that there is not that much margin for OEM items, and we are also dealing with bad currency conversion rates right now.
I will offer the best possible price, but where you guys can really save money is by shipping all wheels in one shipment. That saves a considerable amount of shipping charges!
The minimum order quantity would be 5 steering wheels.

VW OEM Golf 5 GTI Edition 30 Standard steering wheel, without airbag
5 piece or more: USD 439 per wheel
10 piece or more: USD 429 per wheel
Because the prices are calculated so tightly we would prefer one single payment via bank transfer. Do you think this could be arranged?
Let me know if you have any questions
Thank you

The problem then will be that you have a shipment arriving, which will have a value for Customs > $AUD 1,000, and will thus incur both duty and GST. This will add considerably to the cost.
