I am ready to change from my Old Oval Beetle... to a nice
watercooled car. Luckily my Brother has this Scirocco.
- I persuaded him to let me have it.

It is a Mk1 TS 1.6 with twin Dells. It hasnt been on the road for a few years now.
Was Light Blue with multi Coloured Stripes down the sides.
VolksSpares in S.A. used to own it.

-

This car used to be in Fairfield. Its now garaged elsewhere.
I'm keen to get it and start the work , but there's always stuff holding
up progress.

I will need to see Matt regarding the Brake improvements.
Those standard brakes get scary at times.!

I already know what a Great car it is to drive. It corners like nothing else.

A blue scirocco in Fairfield? How come I've never seen it... oh well, at least its going to a better place. You said it was in storage was it? Regardless I look forward to seeing the car brought back to its original pristine condition!

Good luck m8!

Found this on matey-matey.com/dis_2

The biggest structural alteration to the engine was the adoption of bowl-in-piston combustion chambers of a 'Heron' design (dish-headed piston crowns), which allowed the engineers to raise the compression ratio from 8.2:1 to 9.5:1. The inlet valves were enlarged, whilst the main and big end bearings were uprated to cope with the increased engine speeds. These changes raised the output of the engine from 75BHP to 110BHP at 6100rpm, and maximum torque was increased to 101lb ft at 5000 rpm. As the figures suggest, the new engine's peak power was produced at the top end of the rev-range, which coupled with the engines inherent eagerness to rev, forced the inclusion of a rev limiter with a cut-out set at 6900 rpm.

Following lengthy testing, an airdam was added under the bumper at the front of the car to improve stability at speed. To offset the subsequent reduction in airflow over the 'sump', an oilcooler was mounted to the side of the radiator. Placed directly in the air-stream, it helped reduce the higher oil temperatures of the newly tuned engine. Unlike the generation of similar cars that would soon follow in the GTI's footsteps, no other spoilers were fitted to the Golf. A variety of airdams and ailerons were tested, but were ultimately rejected as their marginal benefits were outweighed by their weight and detriment to the car's appearance. As demonstrated later, the prudence of this decision to keep the car subtle is undoubtedly a significant factor in the GTI's success.

With a resultant fifty-seven percent power increase over the standard 1600 Golf, Volkswagen's engineers wisely uprated the braking system. The solid front discs were replaced with ventilated items, whilst a larger servo was included to provide greater pedal assistance. For increased braking safety a load-proportioning valve was fitted to the rear suspension beam. The valve linked between the car and the suspension, directly apportioned rear braking effort according to load in the rear of the car. Under hard braking, the system would automatically lessen braking at the rear as the car began to dive at the nose, thus preventing premature and dangerous rear brake lock.
------------------
I'll have to look at the GTI head to see what thats like.
I certainly need to improve the brakes.

You are a lucky man hydro
These cars are my favourite VW
I have read somewhere that 16v version that came with bigger brakes & a 3' stright through exhaust, which gave it a better top speed than the porchse 911 of the day
Not to mention that it really looks the bussiness with the sleek lines it has

If you ever bother to sell it, I'm sure you would get a lot of attention

Why would you run standard (third world commodore standard) petrol?

Yup it costs a couple of cents more per litre, but the car goes faster, travells further and you dont crack manifolds etc.l

Actually you raise a good point, I will have to do a test to see how L/100 km

The " cracking manifolds " issue , I guess thats exhaust manifold.
Is that due to running too hot?

The grooves in the Head allow you to run Higher Compression without the
problems usually associated with doing this. The grooves allow for more complete burn of fuel.

Yeah I have some rear drums for you Glenn, dont leave it too long tho.

I have seen lots of cracked manifolds from using normal unleaded. It makes em get hotter and so break. God knows what it does to the rest of the engine. Use 98 octane. Or at least 95 with a carby.

with the paint, it depends on where and who is painting it.

if you can afford it, get it done properly in 2 pak, or if you're doing the budget thing, acrylic is great for garage/back yard jobs. with enough time and effort acrylic can look just as good as 2 pak jobs. 2 pak isn't so safe for home use though.

Glenn, go with the 2 pac, way more durable paint than Acrylic even though more expensive. make sure the bodywork around the windows , top of front guards, sills and rear axle points are rot free before you hit it with the paint.

Have a read in here, there once was pics of suspect rust areas but that changed with the new rocco forum.

http://sciroccoregisterforum.co.uk/faq/

I would clean out all the inner sections of the doors, sills, body cavities and get some body wax injected while your doing the bodywork.

You will need to be extremely careful, Isocyanates are accumalitive material, once you have a reaction to exposure it is likely they will always be a continuing problem.

"Safety alert on isocyanate sprays
10 July 2009 Print this article Comments Share this article
WORKSAFE Victoria has released a safety alert for woodworkers warning of the risk to health from spraying furniture with two-pack polyurethane paints and lacquers containing isocyanates.
According to the safety alert, spraying generates a mist that may be inhaled and cause respiratory sensitisation and occupational asthma. Exposure to trace amounts of isocyanates can then trigger these symptoms once a person is sensitised, which means the person can no longer work with isocyanates.
Organic solvents and thinners used to clean spray guns can also affect the central nervous system and various organs and can cause dermatitis.
The risk can be eliminated or reduced by referring to the material safety data sheets for guidance on suitable controls, or using paints and lacquers that do not contain isocyanates.
Other measures include using downdraft or side-draft spray booths to vent the fumes outside, locating open faced spray booths away from cross drafts, using an airless or high volume low pressure spray technique to minimise overspray, and using an airline respirator.
Items should be placed on a turntable in an open faced booth, so the operator can rotate the items and direct the spray towards the extraction point. Freshly sprayed items should be kept in the booth until they are touch dry.
Spray booth, respirator and airlines should be maintained regularly to ensure air quality, and there should be control of ignition sources in areas where flammable solvents are used or stored and within two metres of open faced booth "

Early Scirocco uses aluminium extrusion, very easy to bend out of shape, has a tiny slot in the rain gutter at each end for a dimple in the ali to clip into.

Later versions use the clear plastic coated foil stuff, which with sun action goes brittle and yelows, usually falls apart trying to remove it. Held on with a black mastic stuff.

I was wondering if white neon strips would illuminate it better. Will try the lights first.
Maybe a switch to flickering light could be fun - or good for braking.

I doubt it, it doesn't affect the safety of the vehicle at all, so i doubt you'd need it for RWC. There's nothing on my old RWC's that would indicate the need for this.

having said that, you'd kick yourself if it came down and bopped you on the head one day.

My Brother sees it for first time [ rebuilt ] tomorrow, I'm afraid he may Plead for it back.:frown:
[ emoticon for scared...I Love my Brother but not enough to give back the Rocco ].

I doubt it, it doesn't affect the safety of the vehicle at all, so i doubt you'd need it for RWC. There's nothing on my old RWC's that would indicate the need for this.

having said that, you'd kick yourself if it came down and bopped you on the head one day.

" You'd kick yourself " ... doubt I'd be able to kick myself - would probably be in hospital.:)
- rear wiper , Rubber spoiler add to the weight of this Hatch - I get a work-out each time I hold it open.

Swap one of them for a golf MK 1 unit, changing both makes it too hard to close...

The scirocco ones run at a lower pressure than the golf pieces.

Thank you. Thought that the Rocco hatch was heavier & would need harder
strut.
Since they are lighter gassed - the rebuilt ones might be fine . :)

Excellent progress mate!

Just go to ASV for a blueslip, I had bald tires, no rear seatbelts, no visors, missing trim and an untsable misfiring idle which backfired and they just passed my VR6. Just be sure to pay up-front for it though

Thanks. You Cracked me up..... What or where is ASV , perhaps you better not post that on open forum - they may get shut down.

You eased my concerns about Blueys , maybe mine will pass :)

Thanks to my Daughter [ son reckons he's too sick to help  ]
the Brakes are working , they still need a little more work - but at least they work.

-I will be getting struts for hatch - but that may take some time - want to get
it registered [ like yesterday ! ].

-demister , still trying to work out whats wrong.

-rear washer , not pumping [ wiper working ].

Thats about it, then cruise around " hopefully visit some enthusiasts ".
psst they may take better photos....:)

oh - it still needs a good buffing & waxing.

The place is going down the toilet because of how badly they do business anyway, so why not make the most of it while it lasts ?

Thanks for that, I asked around some of my mates - they told me of a place
that is " very fair " and is very close to where I live. So will try them.

Been a long time.......... I am still working to get this Registered. Ran out of Cash, but
now my Tax return is in, Hoping this Friday to get Blue slip.
I drove to Public weighbridge at Landsdowne.
Weighed in at 780 Kg :) :)
Of course I was hoping for lighter. Ha Ha.
Is certainly nice to drive. I just Love the sound of those Dells Purring. . !!
- I stuffed up with the Buffing , so more work is required on the paint.
Oh well, practice makes perfect.
-
Cant believe that this car weighs in less than the little Mazda 2 [ bubble car thing ].

Am so Dissapointed.... I went for Blue slip on Friday, Turns out the car has no compliance plate...........
So now I am trying to figure out what I can do to get it registered.

Has any one else struggled with this problem ?

Try ringing Volkshop ( or wherever it came from in South Australia) and find out if it was ever registered None of mine have compliance plates but are registered under private imports.

Thats good to know. This was a Private import by a fellow in South Australia , who then sold it to Volkshop.
My Brother had it registered in NSW before.
I drove it a few times - it is so nice to drive. I am determined to get this registered.
-
Matt told me that booster may be stuffed - Thanks for tip, that would add up to symptoms.
I want to get the Rocco down to his workshop, but I will be trying the " banging head against wall " of the RTA first.
- Hopefully they can get some records out.
Glenn.

Moved a step closer; my brother went to RTA and got the proof of registration form. They said that this would be all thats needed to
get the blue slip.
Matt reminded me that I need a document of sale from Brother to me.
I am hoping to get the car down to the Camden workshop on Friday - and then after some repairs it gets registered soon. :)

the Scirocco is now at Matts workshop.
Matt was most amazed at the brakes - he wondered how they managed to stop the car.
I would love to see my old Rocco down there with the 3 other Mk2's. That would be nice.
Matt is confident to fix some things and have it Blue slipped by Monday. I need to get hold of some better brakes for the front. So will have to keep searching.
For now , will just be happy to drive this neat old car around.

Got the " much needed " Ventilated Disks [ with bigger calipers ] up front now. Thanks Mat.
I am enjoying driving it. I took a trip up the Blue Mountains Sunday Arvo. Love those Woodford bends. :)
Shame the speed limit is so low. Think about 180 km/h would suit this car better.

Should have come on the cruise mate, I think a couple of people may have exceeded the speedlimit once or twice.

What a cracker of a car! I've only had a chance to give mine a quick squirt through the Hills and was amazed at the handling and responsiveness. I can only imagine how yours would go being all sorted and tuned......once again, awesome car!!

Ah the Adelaide Hills - this car absolutely loves them.!
When it was light blue with rainbow side strips [ belonged to VolksRepair in Adelaide ] it used to frequent those Hills. :) I took the trip up and down the main road of the Adelaide Hills with my brother driving it - a couple of times. The Handling is Outstanding for Sure. !!!!!
Thanks Poprocco.

Things were going well too , all bolts undoing easily because they were installed 5 weeks ago.
