So today I (almost) finished installing a 9WZ module in my wagon. And before I go any further can I just say...

WHAT. A. ****. Of a job!

It took me the better part of 4 hours (a lot of which involved swearing) and it was one of the most irritating, annoying, infuriating, painful, frustrating jobs I have ever done on a car. I wouldn't wish that on my enemy.

The main issue was trying to get the new wiring loom with those big connectors to fit in the tiny cavity behind the RNS so that the head unit could slide all the way back again. I eventually had half the dash off trying to get my hands in the back there to try and jiggle things around to get it all to fit.

The module still isn't sitting fully under the seat because I don't have the tools to lift the seat rail so that I can thread the wiring under.

I haven't managed to get my phone to connect yet but to be honest I couldn't be arsed right. That is future Dom's problem.

Oh and did I mention that once I had put everything back together I had one spare panel screw!!! I looked everywhere but I could work out where it came from. I think it is from under the steering wheel somewhere because there was a "rattle" there when I took the dog to the park that I'm sure wasn't there this morning... Also future Dom's problem...

It is a bit of a pain to install.

I used a coat hanger to draw the cable through to the cut outs in the carpet and had some success without too much hassle.

Also found a spot for the large quad lock connectors to slot into and tuck away when pushing on the RNS. I can't imagine there being much space if you have more then one harness with additional quad lock connectors. 2 would be the max I think would fit without too much hassle

I eventually got the quad locks to fit but it hurt a lot because my hands were too big to get in there.

I'll give the coat hanger thing a go! I didn't think of that earlier...

It's a bit tight behind there but at least you got there!

The coat hanger will help a lot. It should extend near the dash trim where it meets the carpet, therefore you can tape the cable to the coat hanger and guide it through

And now my RVC isn't working... oh bother.

i found if you cut the legs off the module it fits ;)

I found installing my Bluetooth a breeze compared to installing my RVC!! I didn't have any issues with the headunit not sliding back. It was a little bit of a pain tracking the wiring through under the carpet to the cutout near where the unit sits but overall, not too bad. Isn't that strange that you've had a right royal ***** of a time installing!!!

Ya not sure if I was just being an idiot but it was really doing my head in. Anyway I'll have to pull it all apart again tomorrow to find out why the RVC isn't working. Will also sort out the wiring under the seat.

So I made lots of progress yesterday...

RVC working again - check
It seems that the locking mechanism for the plug on the back of the RNS is broken. The little spring bit that locks the lever in place once installed has broken off. I just pushed it in a bit more and that seemed to work.

Found where the extra panel screw belonged - check
It was in behind the glovebox.

Rattle on driver's side fixed - check
I think it was the front cover over the instrument cluster. Wasn't clipped in properly...

BT wiring loom fixed - check
I bought a spline set and lifted the seat so that I could the loom fully under the carpet and through the cutout under the seat. It was so tight under there that this was the only way.

I got the phone programmed on VCDS, as well setting up the voice commands, and have made a test call after pairing my phone. So far that all works really well and I'm really happy with the audio quality! My work colleague has an A3 and phone calls in his car sound ****house!

The only thing left is to get the BT working for media. The button is there but it's still greyed out. I imagine it's another setting in VCDS?

For anyone else looking to do this I found this excellent tutorial on the VW Club SA forum.

The 9wz needs pairing for Bluetooth and selecting of the phone for media via the cluster, after that play a song and the Bluetooth button should show up under the media menu of the rns

Thanks mate. I got it working a couple days ago. There are still a couple things that are bugging me and I'm not sure if there is a way around them (at least not that I have found).

1. Every time I get a notification for a text or email or whatever the audio in the car gets silenced for about 5 secs. That happens whether I'm listening to the radio or a cd. Really annoying. I can't find any settings on the head unit or the cluster to stop this. Is there anything in VCDS?

2. When playing music through BT the sound only comes out of the 2 front speakers that are used for phone calls. None of the other speakers work. This means all of the mid and low range is lost. When you change the volume the volume bar comes up green and says telephone. The tone button on the head unit doesn't do anything so you can't set the balance etc. It seems that music is playing through the telephone connection rather than a true BT media link. Also really annoying...

Any help much appreciated!

Number 1's defiantly a RNS setting in a menu, there's a check box to play Bluetooth audio or something automatically ( off the top of my head) will check for you soon as i need to head to the shops.

Number 2- didn't have that issue with mine, what harness did you use to install the kit? Did it have the 2 quad lock connectors or did it involve some wiring and splicing?

What's the part number of the Bluetooth unit?

I've tried that both off and on. No difference.

The harness with the dual quad connectors. No splicing required.

Hmm the one i was thinking of is the "Bluetooth audio auto play" function under setup> media

Pretty sure that's the same model Bluetooth unit I have also.

Did you do any coding after it was installed?

Yup that's the same one I found.

Yes I did. Changed some settings in VCDS for the telephone and the canbus as per a thread on the VW Club SA forum. Link a few posts up. I don't think I changed anything with regards to media. Might have a look through it all again tomorrow.

Hey mate so my coding didn't match. It was as per below.

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/04/34e4a357ecb9908cd67826795e85ce85-3.jpg

I've now changed it so that it matches yours but that made zero difference.

I'm now a little worried that the problem may be my phone. I have an iPhone 6...

I think I'll start a new thread in the audio & navigation forum.

No probs at all, I tried the RSAP feature with a friends android phone, sending and receiving SMS'a from the RNS and the Signal boost from the external antenna was about all the benefits of having android, all other functions are the same for android or iPhone.

Some people wouldn't like the rsap mode as the sms's delivered are only stored on the head unit and not the phone while connected via Bluetooth.
