View Full Version : QLD Lakeside Breakfast + Happy Laps - Sunday Feb 12 2017
prh1973
13-12-2016, 06:03 PM
Hello Fellow VAG enthusiasts!
I have booked Lakeside Park for Breakfast + Laps.
Please provide the colour, make and model of your car when requesting a spot so we can confirm who is out there.
I have to pre-pay to book the event for us now.
Pricing for forum members is $35 per Driver and $20 per each Passenger.
No show No refund.
Closer to the date I will send you the payment details so we can have it all paid up and sorted on time.
Payment is to be made by January 17.
If we need to open it up to non forum members to fill spots costs will be $40 for Drivers and $20 for each of their Passengers.
Payments not received by due date will mean you are replaced with a reserve.
The Breakfast starts at 7:30am sharp and we should be out on the track by 8:15am after a safety briefing at 8am.
Please be there by 7:15am.
Please be aware that QLD Raceways does monitor the forum and as such, any posts regarding activities that breach the rules of the track/happy laps will be noted by the staff and you may be banned from the events.
Queensland Raceways Management has asked that we review the format for our happy laps to ensure that we can continue to host the event in a safe and suitable manner and as a result we must urge that THIS SESSION IS NOT A RACE and non compliance will not be tolerated. People not adhering to the rules will be banned from future events.
VWWatercooled Forum and Event Organiser/s are not liable for any damage to any vehicles or track facilities. Driving on a Racetrack at speed is dangerous and you should consider these risks before deciding to come on track.
Rules are as follows (Please Read Carefully):
Conduct: This is not a dedicated track event. People have been warned previously about their driving conduct and, as a result, we have been pulled off early. If this happens the offender will be banned from all future events.
* FWD and AWD Euro cars preferred as per review request by Doug (at discretion of event organiser).
* All vehicles that enter must be road-worthy and registered with viewable registration plates.
* At a minimum, please wear shorts, t-shirt and closed-in shoes with a grippy sole.
* No children under 12 years of age are allowed in cars on track.
* Payments not received by the due date may mean member is removed from the main list and replaced by a reserve. This is so pre-payment to Qld Raceways is made on time.
Overtaking is only permitted on the main straight and no overtaking past the kink, overtaking in the lead up to the carousel/hairpin corner is dangerous and introduces unnecessary risk.
* The responsibility is on the overtaking driver to do it safely. IF IN DOUBT, DO NOT OVERTAKE.
* If you are not overtaking anyone on the main straight, please stay to the left of the track and let any driver that is consistently on your tail overtake you. You'll know this if you've been watching your mirrors.
To be overtaken safely, maintain your speed at the entry to the main straight and stay to the left. Do not brake or accelerate, just hold your line at a reasonable, steady speed to allow the overtaking driver to execute the manoeuvre safely.
* If you think you are actually quicker on the track, then you should be able to come up to that car again the next time you reach the main straight, and then the roles will be reversed: The original overtaking driver should now let the other car overtake.
Passengers are welcome and encouraged. Anyone entering the track (drivers, passengers and those splitting the driving) must have a wristband, which means that track fees are payable by everyone in the car (but you get a delicious breakfast, which is BONUS!)
No children under 12 years of age are allowed in cars on track.
Breakfast Menu:
Toast, Egg and Capsicum omelette,
Bacon, Chipolatas,
Baked beans, Fried tomato,
Mushrooms, Tea & coffee
Please let me know if you have any food allergies/vegetarianism etc so i can see if they can source something suitable.
Additional information and reminders:
* This event is open to forum contributors only.
* Anyone can come and passenger with you (no children under 12 years old).
* I am capping the number to 28 cars to make the costs associated with the event still suitable while having a good number of cars to minimise traffic problems out on the track.
* Please post to indicate that you would like to attend with the colour, make and model of your vehicle and how many people you will be bringing with you. You can be anonymous on the forum but you cannot be anonymous on the track.
When the main list is full, members will be added to the reserve list. If someone pulls out, the first person on the reserve list will be moved up to the main list. Any forum members remaining on the reserve list by the event date will be placed directly on the main list for the next event. Please check the next event details when they are posted to ensure that you can attend if you are put on the main list.
Directions for entry:
Drive across the causeway, then follow the road to the right around the back of the track, then enter the tunnel on your left. Turn right after exiting the tunnel toward the group parking on the grassy area in front of the big yellow building.

Hi Paul,
I came last time in my Audi A1 Sport (Silver car!). Amazing event. My A1 is currently for sale - and I assume it will be gone by February!
I have a new car but it is not VAG. Would I be able to come this time in my F30 328i BMW? I know you're hesitant against RWD cars -but I promise to behave!
If yes, please lock me in and I'll pay immediately.

Thanks for sharing this article. It's a very interesting read. Whilst learning car control I left the "nannies" turned on up to the point where it started slow me down. Now I turn off traction but leave stability on. I'm my mk6 R I could not turn of the esc but with the 86 I can but I choose to leave it in until I gain greater control skills and confidence in the car and my driving. To turn off esc in the 86 I have to perform a "pedal dance" procedure. Google it to see what's involved.

Happy lap pace rarely/probably shouldn't be at a pace where traction/stability control would intervene. So leave it on.
For timed events I turn it off as it needs to move on the track to get the most out of it.

Yeah, I would agree however for those that have a sport or race setting for the aids, I think that is still the fastest and safest way.
Take, for example, the Ferrari 458. It was demonstrated to be (clearly) quicker round Fiorano with the aids in sport mode than fully off when driven by the same driver (Marc Gene from memory).

Some slip is desirable, well essential in most FWD appliations at least. Though a fast car isn't necessarily a fun car. My car when set-up for a fast lap isn't quite as fun as it can be and requires a little different driving style. I'd usually take fun over fast even when running for lap times.

I keep the traction on. If the light starts flashing that's a good indicator that I need to dial it back a notch. There's no sheep stations at stake... thankfully the Scirocco handles so well that the light very rarely blinks and I punt it pretty hard.

sounds like you can get addicted by the prone to slip toyota 86 which is a fun as opposed to hardcore fast lap times car 😀

As we have a Track day coming up, Thought I'd be safe than sorry...
As old mate from QR said they had a couple of cars catch fire from another club.
So Popped in to Bunnings for a 1kg Fire Extinguisher (Dry Powder $15.80)

Installed in to a Skoda RS wagon and Golf R.
Installed with Cable ties in the boot via the cargo net hooks, seems to hold up for a lap around the block.

I looked into those a few months ago and was a tad concerned the cradle may not hold the extinguisher under excess corner loads.

So 34 deg day predicted on Sunday. For those that are tuned and are able to, good idea to watch those oil temps when on track. If you see over 115 deg probably a good idea to cool it off for a few laps.
Reminder that you can add passengers on the day no worries ($20 each). Please have correct money if you can.

Actually it's fine and I ran it for a while. Map 6, however, applies less torque low down to reduce the stress on the clutch. So I run it now to be on the safe side.

Thanks again Paul, appreciate the work you put in to organise these, as always.
Good to see everyone behaving themselves again too.
I didn't mind it being a bit shorter this time, I pulled in a bit early anyway. Didn't want to push too hard in this heat. Something in the front end didn't feel quite right today, it felt a bit floaty. Could have just been down to the heat... anyway, it's due for a service soon so I'll get the brakes, suspension & steering checked out.
Here's my video. The camera mount is dodgy af and rattles, and I forgot to turn off speed alert so the car dings every time I hit 130kmh, but apart from that the footage is ok. I got a bit sweary a couple of times, forgot the camera was there (whoops) so please ignore that...

It was unfortunate that the session was cut short. I was approached by the track official after to session to discuss why. The points noted were...
3 drivers were pulled in and chatted to for going too hard and there were a lot of cars compressing at the end of the straight causing concerns of rear end collisions.
It seems that Qld Raceways may be easing these sessions back to make for a safer time on track. In someway I agree that we can still have a great fun time. Happy laps are about having fun and stretching our car legs. It also is an avenue for newcomers to have their first track experience in their pride and joys.
If people are wanting to pushing their driving and cars capabilities, I encourage them to join us for a street sprint or time attack session in a higher risk environment and it delivers higher rewards. If anyone would like more info on these sessions we can point you in the right direction.
I am wanting these happy laps to continue and if we are continuing to receive this feedback from the track management, we as a group will have to get tough on the offenders, so please let's not get to this stage. Remember it's up to us all to create a fun and safe happy lap environment.
Regards
Paul

Hopefully I wasn't a culprit, I wasn't hammering it too much. Although I totally agree there was a few times I had to really stand on the anchors after the kink due to congestion at turn 1. No big deal to me, everyone has different cars, different abilities and confidence levels. Just need to be patient.
As a suggestion to QR, maybe a mandatory debrief after the session would be good too? That way people get a chance to correct their behaviour for next time if they were pushing the friendship a bit.
I also had a thought maybe the initial entry onto the track could have a bit of an informal order to it, so the faster ones are at the front and the slower ones at the rear?

Fair point and I think that's been tried. Though it makes no difference after 3 laps. That's the reality, front markers will catch back markers within a few minutes.
For what I saw of today, it seemed that I was in open air for the most part and didn't experience any suspect driving.

Yea front cars were on top of the last cars with in 3/5 laps
+1 for a debrief, good or bad...
But as Paul said, next level is sprints, maybe a few of us should be looking in to that.

Ok everyone..I will openly put my hand up for being responsible..and I apoligise for this..I am the Black TT ..I admit running hard this morning and to honest I did abide by pre cruise briefing only passing on front straight. Etc..
I have moved on to Timeattack as Paul has suggested for those who dipped there toes in the water and enjoy it..and I couldn't speak more highly of the format that is run..give it a go..
I will refrain from adventurous driving in the future and hope that I haven't spoilt the day for anybody..
Cheers and stay safe everyone

Yeah true... I didn't really see any suspect driving either. There was a couple of situations where people in front could have got into a sticky situation approaching the kink, but they recognised it and backed off safely.

:-(I got pinged too. Not really sure where I failed their standards, I think I only got in one clear lap before I picked up an overboost code and called it a day.
There was quite a few cars that came off early. It was really hot today.
I apologise too Paul, for causing you to get the quiet word.

Yeah, at first I thought we'd had our session based on how my car was feeling. I don't think I would have stayed out much longer.

Nice photos again mate! How did you find the BMW over the A1?
Hey, Thank you!
The BMW is definitely a more lively and fun car, but it's a bit more tail happy.
The Audi would understeer a lot more, so I could mash the throttle at any time and actually go fast. In the BMW, I'm very scared to hit the throttle through a corner.
I find myself also liking the suspension in the BMW a lot more. The car needs some lowering springs, so it stays more flat ( and doesn't look like kite). At the moment, it is a bit of a boat.
In general though - even though I went a bit slower, I think it was just more fun.

It was definitely a different session to what I have experienced in the past at HL lakeside but I also didn't see anyone driving disrespectfully. Actually quiet the opposite, people were moving over on the straight and staying within their limits from what i witnessed...
As mentioned before by others, I think there is a wide spread of driver and car ability but in my view we all reconginse that...
Apologies if I held anyone up or appeared erratic driving, I was slowing down to give me some space and then speeding up to have fun...
A hot day and an early session but all in all a good morning without incident...

Hey guys I've dumped all the photos I took on my dropbox... I hope the link works. Wish I got there earlier to get more n track shots.
Apologies in advance if I didn't get your car or if it's a little out of focus. I'm a bit of an amateur.
There aren't any watermarks and I'm not charging $ yet. So if you use on social media could you please tag my instagram page using ''@VW.Queensland'' TIA

Hey Guys and Gals
I have put up a new thread for the next Happy Laps at Qld Raceway April 9. I have also reduced the number of cars to 25 after some feedback about congestion from participants and Qld Raceway management. This means the cost for each driver is now $40 and each passenger is $20. Still affordable fun for sure.
Reserves from the last event have already been added to the new main event list.
New thread can be found here http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f21/vw-queensland-raceway-breakfast-laps-april-9th-117324.html#post1217724
Regards
Paul
