Hi all
Looking for suggestions for a head unit for 2011 t5 multivan that would incorporate all features ie: steering controls etc, not really concerned about climate stuff on screen, but looking for one with gps built in , Bluetooth & also a good sound output, touch screen etc etc, Dab radio & tv would be good also.
Still new too t5 stuff , I had a 1995 t4 transporter for a very long time but they were very basic I think compared to the t5 , so still learning.
Cheers.

This the one I have which does have DAB+ GPS touch screen Bluetooth plays CD's DVDs Mp3s etc download Apps via Wi fi , mirror link for phone has multiple RCA inputs and outputs so if you have amps etc you can get even better audio . Reverse camera input and forward collision camera input / steering wheel controls . NOW it is from China so please make your own mind up , I have bought quite a few from this company for our own vans and cars with no problems . Other members have not had the same experience that I have had so you will get differing opinions on them . If you want to see mine I am on the Gold Coast from time to time for work and would be happy to show you how it works etc . They can be a bit hard for some people to get their minds around as there are so many settings and a lot of people have trouble because they miss the sub menus . Erisin ES3015V 8 Android 5.1 Car DVD GPS Player for VW [ES3015V] - US$252.00 : erisin.com (http://www.erisin.com/erisin-es3015v-8-android-51-car-dvd-gps-player-for-vw_p610.html) . DAB + will not work in the Gold Coast as the signals emanate from Brisbane and its pretty much line of sight , so you will only get DAB from around Beenleigh north to Kallangur on the northside of brissie FM and AM is ok .

How hard are they to install?

They are an exact copy of the original VW series so it screws in with the same fours screws , to remove the old unit you can lift up the top piece above the head unit it is just clipped into place . Then there are two torx screws over the top of the facia unit , once they are out just pull the face plate off and unplug the couple of plugs . When you then look at the original unit down each side there are the four torx screws that hold it in place remove and just pull the unit out . The new one will plug into the original harness all you will need to do is to mount the GPS antennae either against the windscreen or like I did cut a piece of the packing foam and sat the antennae above the head unit as there is plenty of space once mounted . Naturally if you have extra amps they can be plugged in and also run the external microphone across to the drivers side and run it up the pillar to the roof trim just inline with the top of the pillar trim . Any other connections ie reverse camera forward facing collision camera will need to have those wires run as well . To be honest mounting is apiece of cake five minute its the wiring up all the other bits can be a bit daunting for a newby . But as I have done so many of these I know all the short cuts and access points for the extras .Oh and its plug and play NO CODING required unlike the VW units .

Hi Sunny,

Long time reader of your posts and you clearly know your way round these vans.

Do you know if there is much of a difference between the T5 & T6 audio units?

We only have the basic 2016 T6 and although apples CarPlay is ok, I want more!

Would the unit youve recommended above slot into the T6?

Cheers,
TK

To be honest I have not looked at the new T6 for the radio thing , I did look at one a few months ago and saw some more things that the Europeans seem to have misjudged for Australian conditions . I will have look and let you know , then do some research on any models that may work . Now I have just recently been sourcing some units from another company in China , they seem a little more advanced than Erisin . I purchased a unit for a Colorado and two Toyota Hi Lux's and they were top notch with some newer functions . I have asked them for the latest info for the VW T5.1 with DAB+ and they can do them .

I started watching a few on ebay when I got my van in 2012!
Never had the guts to pull the trigger without some feedback.
Look forward to their answer.

Try Witson as I said they seem to be a bit in front of Erisin on functions and service . I had difficulty with the reverse camera wiring on the Colorado unit and they sent me the wiring directions within 24 hrs , admits here I worked it out myself the same day they replied but was happy with their quick response . This is the link they sent last night for a compatible VW unit that will work with DAB + , they will send the DAB antennae with USB plug once you fit the unit you will be able to download the DAB app via Wifi direct to the head unit . You can email the contact and let them know what options you want and then give to a price with freight to Australia here is the email allen@witson.com This is the DAB+ part that just plugs in USB DAB+ RECEIVER----ZHUHAI WITSON INDUSTRIAL CO.,LTD.---Professional Car DVD Player Manufacturer (http://www.witson.com/en/displayproduct.html?proID=102676214)

I had a look at a T6 and it seems VW changed the dash but not the actual opening for the radio unit . Its the same size and shape as the T5.1 from 2010 onwards so there are heaps of different models available from various suppliers VW used the same shape head unit in Golfs Polos Boras and Tiguans

Hey Sunny, that's what I thought going by photos and stuff- thanks heaps for clarifying!

Do you know if the plastic shroud on the T6 just clips in? And then it's as per the other thread where the four bolts hold it in?

Now that I don't know as I would need to be let loose with a hammer and screw driver LOL . I would imagine there would be similarities with the earlier one by trial and error see if there is a top section and then check for the release of the surrounding facia usually several clips . I use a plastic trim removal tool as it removes the risk of scratching or marking the trims .

But it would be the same for a 5.2?

There are only 3 variations from 2004 to now . T5 2004 to 2010 / T5.1 2010 to late 2015 / T6 late 2015 to present , what do you mean by T5.2 ? If there is a T5.2 then it will be the same as T5.1 in the shape of the head unit at least , and as I have seen same for T6 . The early T5 had a pure rectangular shape . Now in the same T5 model there may have been a unique head unit that was much wider than all the others due to inclusion of extra features . Don't quote me on that last one but I do recall some discussion years ago in relation to that .

That's what I thought!
Over on a UK forum what we call a 5.1 they call a 5.2.
Their 5.1 runs 06 - 10 (by memory)
Very confusing.
