Hi folks

I was reading about VCDS modules and labels on Ross-Tech website, and apparently each module in your car has to have a file or the software can not help you with coding and you are in the blind. I downloaded the latest version today, installed it, and compared the contents of its labels folder with part number of modules installed in my car. Apparently, there is no label for any module. Here's a short list of modules:

ibiglari: Hello. I hope that you have a genuine RT cable, else I fear that you will never be able able to populate the control modules with the missing files!

The missing "label" files are used by the long coding helper in VCDS to populate the descriptors next to the Bit boxes. The information tells the cable user what the function is for each of the Bits for each Byte. In time, Ross Tech will develop these files. So - without the long coding helper, you have to use the "short coding" process which simply means that you have to manually enter the changes that you want. Of course, you need to know which bit does what function! This information might be available on the net - I've not looked for this data, so I'm not sure how prevalent this information is on the net.

Coding-strings on control modules are certainly very important to VW vehicles, but in later model cars, VW seems to have emphasized adaptation channels more. Although the 2016 Polo hasn't been built on a MQB platform, it appears to have a very MQB-ish style network structure. So I suspect that there will be an abundance of adaptation channels in your vehicle!

Not having label files, doesn't affect the ability to change adaptation channels.

PS: Having the wiring diagrams and other Erwin information, doesn't help much with coding/adaptation channels changes IMO

Today I faced another issue. I found a few codes which were quite easy to test (such as needle swing, tear wipe, etc.) and I tried to code them into the controllers in the blind (editing the mentioned byte of the controller to set the mentioned bit without the labels - for instance, for needle swing you open module 17 - Instruments, and set bits 0 and 3 of the 2nd byte to one). After modifying the bits in Long Coding Helper and clicking "Do It!", VCDS would say "Coding accepted" while it wasn't. Turning the ignition off and back on and reading the code again would reveal that no changes were saved. Any ideas?

After fiddling for a while, I found out that if I leave the driver door open, codes are written to the ECU. I don't know if this is the standard way or not, but quite interesting :)

I can't afford the Ross-Tech cable :facepalm:

I bought the cable from Total Car Diagnostics (http://www.totalcardiagnostics.com/shop/car-diagnostic-tools/vag/vagcom-rosstech-vcds) which comes with version 12.12

An interesting is, the software is not connecting to all modules. Last night, I connected to the infotainment system (0x5F) which didn't show in the auto-scan.

The main reason for fiddling with the car for me was to enable traffic reports, which I can not because the Adaptations button is disabled in the infotainment controller window :(

Alas you have chosen to buy a pirated cable from the disreputable rogues at Total Car diagnostics - how dishonest is a company that urges buyers not to purchase pirate cables from their competitors and then advertises as the alternative, their own clone cable which they claim to be a "Superior VAGCOM 2016 Scanner That Works Like Original" ? What a complete load of horse-sh#t - clearly there is no honor, even among thieves!!

I'm also not persuaded by those that argue that it's OK to participate IP theft because they are a buyer, or that it's OK because they can't afford a genuine cable. A person's financial status doesn't excuse them from the legal requirement to comply with the law and it certainly doesn't excuse them from the moral obligation to respect the intellectual property rights that Uwe Ross has legitimately built-up over many years. The only reason that the dishonest folk at Total Car diagnostics are able to make a profit from their nefarious business practices is because there are willing buyers who use these kinds of self servicing justifications!!

So, with that off my chest - my only suggestion is that you throw that useless cable in the rubbish!! It's missing the required UDS/ODX/ASAM protocols that are needed by the control modules in your new Polo. Even if you could update the software to Ross-Tech latest version, you would still need to also update the firmware in the dongle to make it compatible with new control modules in your car! You can't do either of these things with the cable that you purchased from Total Car diagnostics!!

If you can't afford a Ross Tech cable, then please have the moral fortitude to at least buy a genuine product like an ODBeleven dongle - which is about the same cost as the pirate clone from Total Car diagnostics. At least then you won't be supporting the illegal pirate clone market!

Well, I agree with you. I did not justify buying that cable by what was on their web site. I contacted Ross Tech inquiring about my car's modules, got no response, downloaded the latest version of VCDS from Ross Tech web site, looked into label files for modules and saw my car's modules were not listed, and then decided not to invest in something expensive until I was sure it could do what I wanted it to do. If I had heard of ODBeleven dongle, I would have bought one right away. Right now, I'm trying to find an email address to contact them and inquire about my car's modules.

I'm glad you could give me some technical details about the protocol because now I can return the cable I already have because it does not fit my purpose.
