Anyone got any advice if this can be fixed outside of getting the dealer to fix it. tailgate opens and closed as it should however does not lock.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Thanks Fletch

Can you still lock it with the key? I vaguely remember with my Jetta that there was two "settings" on the key position as to whether it would lock and unlock with the car or just stay locked. Maybe there is the same thing here?? Just putting it out there. I haven't actually investigated on my Passat though so maybe it is different.

The lock mechanism unit needs to be replaced i would assume. Its got 2 contact switches in it-that tell the tailgate control unit its opened or closed, and the tailgate unit then gives the locking motor a pulseto lock it. The locking mech is about 130$ and is a 10 minute changeover once taking off the tailgate trim. It is fastened with 2 8mm spline head bolts. Although i would get a multimeter out and diagnose b4 spending the money. Erwin current flow diagrams are required to do the diagnosis though.

I agree with limiteded, could be as simple as cleaning the contact switches if they are reachable.

My did this, it was totally stuffed and required a replacement however dealer did it under warranty. i don't think it will be difficult DIY, just a couple of bolts, connector and some trim imo.

My 2011 B7 Passat wagon (non auto tailgate) when attempting to close the tailgate it wouldn't latch..

Any idea of part numbers guys for a new latch? Seems to be a common issue on golfs, jettas etc etc (In 23 year of driving I've never had a car do this!)

Found this schematic on realoem.me

Online Volkswagen Passat/4Motion/Santana spare parts catalogue, Europe market, 2011 model year: body group, rear lid subgroup, Volkswagen VIN decoder, aftermarket, etka online (http://www.realoem.me/Volkswagen/RDW/PA/2011/702/R/8/827/827030)

<2013 estate uses 1K6827505E (http://www.realoem.me/search/tvn/1K6827505E) which can be found on ebay for $30? (they all seem to be chinese??)

I had a latch problem with my B6 before but it was to do with one of the contact switches, not the latching motor. The trunk light just wouldn't come on when the tailgate was opened.

Bought a similar unit from eBay (for B6 of course) about 14 months ago. It works. The only visual difference with the original unit is that the manual latch, which is not connected to anything, is made of plastic instead of metal. I wouldn't care about that.

The instrument cluster functions okay for mine as it is controlled by a separate contact switch. In your case, the latch just doesn't activate any of those switches. If you can check power and signal are okay at the connector with a multi-meter, changing the latch will solve your problem.

Hay drjekl,

Read below thread, there is a good video, you might be able to fix your lock unless its physically damaged inside.

Tailgate Open on dash but physically closed. (http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f234/tailgate-open-dash-but-physically-closed-121884.html)

Thanks Lasa911!

Since the ebay part was only $28 delivered from MElbourne I ordered that, then when it arrives I'll pull it apart and take a look and if its buggered attempt to swap the new one in :)

I'm still shocked thats its failed on a car thats 6.5 years old... First time for everything I guess (the tailgate gets used once a week if that, more likely once a fortnight)

Finally got around to fitting the new chinese ebay latch and yup works great!!

Ive seen guys saying VW dealers charge over $300 fitted, I got the new latch for $28 and it literally takes 15 minutes to install.

On my wagon there were two screws behind the safety triangle clasp, then one in each of the tailgate grab handle (one each on the left and right sides) then just pop trim off with a trim removal tool.

You can then just push trim out of the way to access the two screws holding the latch, unplug the cable then pop the new one in.

I'm not one to put cheap chinese parts on my car but the VW item only lasted 6.5 years, and we rarely use the boot TBH...33912

My locking latch failed with in 3 year mark, was covered under warranty.
I don't think Chinese parts vs Original would make much difference in this condition.
Unless if it's heavily related to safety,

Some thoughts,
you may end up getting Original VW latch made in China. I believe they have their own manufacturing to make vehicles for that region.
