R36 exhaust ... Blackish fumes

Hi all,

I purchased a r36 recently off a 65 years old lady who I think never drove it over 100km per hour and it's never been on a long trip over 300k . In fact to it went Canberra for the first time last week.
What I have noticed is that for the first time I gave it a bit of gas there was a lot of exhaust particles coming out the back - mostly greyish at first. Just thought that it was probably blowing out the cat's a little. However, lately I have noticed that when I really put my foot down that almost blackish fumes appear slightly in the rear view mirror for a small period of time . Is this normal for r36? Is it running too rich? I also notice that the exhaust tips are quite black, but nothing on the white bumpers.

Yes, it's normal for a R36.

Yeah mine smokes a bit when the boot is applied.
Its a little annoying and it does leave some greasy residue on the exhaust tips but its a small price to pay for the smile said boot also provides :)

Typical for the BWS engine. It runs slightly rich. I got a 2011 B7 Highline, same engine, same story. I am always having to clean the exhaust tips regularly.

It's the an inbuilt cloaking device after you have smoked the local bogan crew.

Mine does the same too mate. Bit annoying but as has been said, the propulsion forward is worth it. My exhaust tips are now just black. I can't seem to get them back to shiny chrome so now I just make it out to be a "black" series (as my 36 is black)!! :-)

Although it seems to do it less if you rev it out on a semi-regular basis.


Feels good though when you completely clean the tips and you can see the chrome again :).

Feels better when you give it the berries and listen to that VR6 engine note...

The stock ECU mapping is the culprit.

Have been told from a couple of owners who've had theirs re-mapped that it's less of an issue.

Intake clean every 15K, and a spirited run every now and then should help as well.

How's the intake clean work mate? Is it a specialist thing to do?

Intake clean definitely works. Umai Naa!! did an intake clean for me last time he did a service on mine and after giving it the goolies to clean out was noticeably less smokey.
Prob due for another one as its back to usual now (and I have an aftermarket ecu map on).

Just an upper engine cleaner sprayed into the intake pipe behind (I think?) The maf.

I had some Subaru upper engine cleaner so used that. Plenty of suitable products from Liqimoly etc

Yep, the Subaru or Liqui-Moly products work well.

Sprayed behind the MAF (slip the clamp back, and push the hose in between the MAF and the intake pipe), with the engine held at around 3,000rpm. It's usually a two-man job on these, unless you can rig up a longer hose. You'll probably need to clear the missfire codes out as well once you're done.

Been doing a little testing and I've found that at WOT there really isn't any smoke from mine at all.
Its when I give it about 3/4 or so and engine is loaded like going up a hill when it does a bit of an atmospheric belch.
So I know what I have to do now! ;)
