Hi - yet another Newbie ! This is a topic which has been around a the traps. I am trying to upgrade the towball mass rating on the Multivan, and a previous member (pjondeck) did this very thing about 12 months ago. If you are on deck (sorry!), Peter, I would really appreciate any information on the upgrade, or also from any other members who may have done the same thing. Many thanks.

You really shouldnt go higher than the manufacturers recommendation Same as towed weight
The towing rule states you can only tow either the manufacturers limits or the limits of the towbar
WHICHEVER IS THE LESSER
EG pre 1996 a Toyota 80 ser was limited to 2500kg and 250kg ball weight by Toyota HR made a 3500kg towbar with a 350kg ball weight that fitted However Toyota refused to allow them to be uprated.

Thank you for the response, Hillbilly. I understand the consequences of exceeding the manufacturer's recommendations, and know that I should not do it, nor do I intend to - as the vehicle is at the moment. However an engineered solution has already been successfully applied to allow a towball mass increase. With correct engineering design, the strengthening of any vehicle is possible - and permissible (with the correct approvals), and I am trying to find information on the work carried out by/for the member who has already done this. As an engineer, I have my own ideas, but it would be comforting to know if they are in accord with what has already been done
