Hi Gentlemen, I need advice about which way to go! To start with i own a 1954 vw sportsedan tube chassis beetle.I also own a 04R32 for the past 7months and really have enjoyed driving it.Ive been that impress with it that iam going to do a mid mount R32 or VR6 6 speed conversion in my vw racecar:D.....The prob i have that i cant find a suitable r32 motor!.....Heres the dilema i have:rolleyes:.....Is a VR6 going to satisfy me as good as a R32motor?.....I have supersprinted the r32 golf and was over the hill with it.Would i be going backwards for the satisfaction of a r32 to a VR6......need help on this one gentlemen!.......WAT DO YOU ALL RECKON?

Just pick either one and chuck a turbo on it.

R32 motor has 50 hp over even the 2.9 VR6. That would be a fair sacrifice for the same work in fitting. 2.8VR6 is 174.

The 4 motion engine is basically a small bore R32 motor and has 204hp in std form.

I would hang on for the R32 and do the job once, unless you stuck some forced induction on the VR6 motor for some cheap hp.

Just pick either one and chuck a turbo on it.Turbo is next step! but n/a i want to play with first.I just pulled a ej20t subie out of the vw.Thats because the R32 impressed me that much the subie wouldnt be a match for responsive power.

thanks Gav.

No probs and if you want to throw money at the NA engine you could chip it too. Assuming you plan to use VW injection etc.

not much chance of finding an r32 engine over here. best import one from UK or germany. or if you want low budge watch the auctions for a month or two and youll find a vr6 for not much at all. but why put all that work into a beetle when you could put it into an mk2 ;) :P

probably 4 or 5k (aussie dollars) to buy it then whatever it costs to ship, i dont know how much that is though. theres lots of auctions that sell the complete running gear of wrecked r32's for the 5000euro price range.

only two big ones in aus

www.pickles.com.au
www.manheimfowles.com.au

you can bid online on both of them and its really quite easy. if you have an abn its much easier to organise accounts with them, otherwise you'll have to pay bonds (around 500 i think) before you can bid online. i havnt ever witnessed a vr6 go at auction but my guess is they would go around the 1 or 1.5k mark (for the whole car)

Speak to Sebastian Najder who used to work on the VW R32 race cars bug_racer@yahoo.com he knows the guy who still owns the race cars and they have one of the race cars for $25K or a crate R32 engine for sale which I think they want about $5K for.

Cheers Al

ECU code is different, not sure what MAF they are using, the US has a different MAF to Australia but I have no idea what the UK / Euro cars run. Other than that internally they should be identical.

Yep i will be using the standard Ecu! Personally i think this engines run faultless with wat they have.I will run a APR chip set up ...2 wheel drive. I run the same chip in my 04 R32 unbelievable......Surely the Uk specy should be a more hypo motor!:?

Just a thought - but have you considered parting your own R32 (sacrilegious as that may sound)?

I'm sure there would be plenty of takers for the parts you didn't need given that many of them are bolt-on for other VAG cars, and you'll be assured that the engine, transmission, wiring loom etc are all in good condition and that you've got all the parts you would ever need.

Failing that - wasn't there a written-off R32 in a Pickles auction recently? That might still be floating around the country somewhere.

Failing that still, if you're not afraid of a bit more work and don't mind looking at a VAG 'cousin', there is a written-off Porsche 997 GT3 coming up for auction tomorrow at Pickles. That 3.6L flat 6 would be perfect...

Do your R32 seats have harness guides for 4-6 point harnesses? I'm looking at a new set of seats for the Polo and have the current R32 brochure sitting in front of me as those seats are an option I'm considering. I'd certainly pay a reasonable price for those seats if you did decide to part the car.

By the way - I didn't recognise your car at first, but I'm in Car 82 in those photos you linked to in your for-sale thread.

Well not able to sought out a decent package R32motor and gearbox, ive gone for a 24 valve 2.8L VR6....150kw/201hp and 265Nm(195ft of torque.:)
Thanks Pete at the Vw centre.

The motor has now been detoxed!....new throttle body(larger)will replace other, Exhaust will be done for better flow, ECU will be a EMS8860, leaving head work for mean time but a new and fancier head will becomin from the states.

I will be running the 6speed as a rear wheel drive from the tranfer case also supplied.Gear ratios will change as well.

Just to remember all this in a car averaging no more then 700kgs.:D
