So as my VR6 got written off (which was the original project for the turbo) I now have myself a 3 door ready for the turbo treatment.

My old VR6:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/10/2014102620151520_zpsqzp0joom-1.jpg (http://s671.photobucket.com/user/furci94/media/2014-10-26%2015.15.20_zpsqzp0joom.jpg.html)

The new car is a 1995 MK3 Golf which has already had the VR6 subframe and wide track installed.

Here it is as I found it under a tree in a backyard:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2015/10/2015090420110105_zps0ld61qwe-1.jpg (http://s671.photobucket.com/user/furci94/media/2015-09-04%2011.01.05_zps0ld61qwe.jpg.html)

As it sits now:

With the help of a friend the engine was built earlier this week. The sump will be attached once the fittings for the oil return arrive.

I also installed some colour coded door handles as I had some laying around:

So mad. Good you've kept onto this.

I was looking at getting that mk3. The price and no rego were it's detriment to me. Hope it's all well!

Also, will you squeeze that turbo in on that manifold?

Thanks mate it is a great base to start with it is really clean and rust/dent free.

As for the manifold/turbo fitting it will be close to the firewall but won't hit. If I went for a GT40 or similar it would have been an issue.

Yeah fair enough. Standard intake manifold? What rear housing? 3" exhaust?

No a short runner intake manifold (Mig Fab). The turbine housing is 0.63A/R. Not sure on the exhaust/downpipe size but it will be around 3" or 3.5" most likely.

300kW! Crazy! And in a 3-door.

And thanks mate, 300kW is the minimum power figure I want so it could well be more but we'll keep it low to start.

Thanks Simon I'll let you know if I do. The engine was in immaculate condition so it will make a perfect base for it.

Thanks Seb I'm aware of the brake fluid reservoir issue and it will be sorted. As for the charge pipe the compressor housing needs to be rotated and moved and will face towards the P/S anyway, I simply put that photo up for illustration of progress thus far.

How's your VR6 turbo drag car going any more progress from when I saw it a couple years ago?

Haha yeah big problem if I run out of fuel lol.

Running 8an (12.5mm) feed line and 6an (9.5mm) return line to the surge tank. Feed from the main tank to the surge tank isn't critical but most likely 6an.

You'll need to massage the inside of the gearbox to clearance the rivets on the pressure plate.

I used a flapper wheel on a 4" grinder.

Suggest getting a pinion brace too.

Thanks Hayden I'll see if it spins a full rotation when the gearbox goes and if not I'll give it a grind to get it to fit!

Already have a pinion brace I'll put it on soon once the gearbox is ready to go on ;)

I think I'll set the springs to 1.5 or 2 bar pressure resistance depending on what peak boost pressure is decided upon.

That's a fair bit of boost. You'd be better off running a 14psi spring and using a boost controller to go from there. You'll have much more accurate control over spiking and boost limits.

I doubt you'd go much more than 18psi on this setup.

timiteo

Did some work on it during the week.

Installed the pinion brace on the gearbox as well as a new Sachs race throwout bearing and a Bar-Tek Tuning reinforced clutch fork.
Then bolted the gearbox to engine and installed the BFI stage 1 engine and gearbox mounts and the engine was then dropped into the car. Just need to do the oil lines, coolant lines, intercooler piping and fuel lines next.

Photo of engine in the bay:

-Oil feed and return done
-Pump mounted for AWIC
-FPR mounted
-Fuel lines complete
-Aux pump relocated and all coolant lines complete
-Heat exchanger for AWIC mounted
-Surge tank and external pumps mounted and lifter pump mounted in fuel tank
-Mounted Mocal external oil cooler and ran oil lines

Next is to install drive shafts and finish IC piping including BOV. Not long now before it's off for the tune!

Hey mate it's a water to air intercooler. It uses water to cool down the intercooler rather than air so it can be more compact because there's an external radiator which is used to dissipate the heat from the water in the system.

And thanks guys it's coming along! Just finishing off a few things then it's off to get the tune!

GeorgeMK1
18-01-2016, 10:37 AM
So a small rad cools the water, which in turn cools the intercooler? Sounds like more plumbing and space, but certainly looks very neat and tidy! Very nicely done

Water to air coolers tend to give more consistent results under all conditions. I'm keen to see how it goes :)

If they were crap toyota would have not used them in their WRC cars. ;)

Very nice Tim!
It's a credit to all your hard work.

You joke that it's an rx7 killer.. if it was 4WD it WOULD be!

I have 2x 7s. (One with no motor)
Must say it does hook up nicely off the line. 0-60 in a little over a second. 0-100.. in the 5s but VERY ****ING THIRSTY!

Yours is super neat and very well thought out. Much more of a sleeper too, as my rotor can be heard for kms away. :)

Can't wait to see more.
Thanks mate.

Car is still at the Tuning shop it should be running soon. Just a waiting game at the moment!

A few updates but no tune yet guys!

Car is running but we're just sorting out an alternator charging issue. It ran fine at idle it's just the tune that needs to be done before skids haha.

I won't be making it to VITS Pat I've still got a lot of work to do before then but will be at Nationals.

Josh I do plan on engineering it I have the engineer ready to go I'm just waiting on the tune and install stuff.

Stathi she'll be running soon! Drop around one day after visiting your girlfriend haha

Running a Haltech PS2000 Speed.

And the alternator issue is separate, the ECU runs fine it's just an electrical charging issue.

SP mx5's had the same issue with a haltech. Believe the wiring diagrams are incorrect and needed to be patched. That's why I mentioned it.

If the ecu is responsible for controlling the alternator regulator than its a possibility. I don't know but thought it worth while mentioning it.

Hope it's sorted soon :)

I believe in a VR6 the alternator trigger is in the cluster or something like that.

Anyway it's fixed now and the car is getting tuned next week sometime hopefully.

Sneaky shot from the rear. It's the only piston car in a shop full of rotaries!

Small update started it up and it gets up to temperature everything works fine and it's surprisingly quiet both the exhaust and engine noise. The loudest thing in the engine bay at idle is the ticking from the injectors!

The car is now booked in for tuning next week (I know I've said that before but delays delays) so I should have some numbers very soon!

I'll put a picture up why not here's my MK1 and my friends MK3 3 Door VR6. It's a shame it's N/A though!

Made some nice pulls and good power we almost had the 98 tune done then blew a head gasket on high boost. Waiting for a new head gasket in the mail then back together and off for the ethanol tune!

It definitely comes alive at 3000rpm it's ridiculous how quickly it builds boost. Final power figures to be posted very soon!

So the update is I'm back from holidays and the engine is getting forged internals. So it'll be out sometime this month and off to the machine shop to get a hone and clean ready for reassembly.

Probably won't be ready by GAD but by Christmas is the new goal now I guess!

Hey guys!

Sorry for the delay I've been off the forums a while and only checked up on it recently.

So far I've built the short block (after a hot dip and bore/hone/deck) with Wiseco 82mm pistons, Eagle H Beam rods, all new Glyco bearings and full ARP hardware.

Should have the engine back in the car in a few weeks as I've got everything I need to finish it off.

And thanks Stathi! The MK1 might get some twin Webers soon but I'll finish the VR6T first!

Lower timing chains are on now and I've put a new metal head gasket and torqued down the head to spec. Not long now I just need to set the timing, bolt on accessories and cover plates and it'll be time to put her back in.

Thanks guys!

The gasket wasn't the cause it was one of the pistons cracking, I guess cast pistons and rods can only take a certain amount of load!

Got the crank pulley and upper timing chains on today as well as setting the timing. I just need to put on the timing chain covers, rocker cover and sump once I give them a clean then I can start bolting accessories and turbo back on.

Got the timing chain covers, oil sump and the rocker cover bolted on today:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/01/fd5c64cd40c4db383bbd157ebea4db3e-1.jpg

And my trusty reinforced sump I made before for when it may scrub:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/01/e0e6e3d8682f63a4f47fc7e177f376f0-1.jpg

I also painted the turbo manifold in high temp black to stop it rusting and bolted it on plus connected up the oil return line:

http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/images/imported/2017/01/ee125279a936548fb2062171815fffa2-1.jpg

Next step is accessories and flywheel/clutch.

I also bought some braided wiring wrap for the engine bay wiring I'll be installing before the engine goes back in to neaten it up.

Cheers,

Tim
