After a few Jim Beam and beers, Sean (Golf3) and myself have decided that we are going to go on a road trip to Sydney in May 2008 for the VW Nationals. Who is coming??
Proposed Itinerary:
Leave Friday 23rd May from Melbourne
Arrive in Sydney somewhere that evening
Party like it's 1999
Go to VW Nats on the Sunday 25th May
Party like its 2000
Drive home slowly on Monday 26th May
This hereby allows everyone enough notice for the drive!
Get prepared, we're going to rock the house!
For your enjoyment, this is whats going to happen when we get there!!!

If there were say between 8-10 people that did it you could all share a hostel room. I'm sure you wont be spending much time there other than nursing hangovers in the morning.
That should only cost $20-30 each for the night. Or if only a few came up, I'm sure a few of us could spare a bedroom or two and a couch.
Bring it Melbourne!

This sound's like a plan. Nice work Matt & Sean.
I should be down for this one 95% now that I've got a new, very cheap to run booze cruiser.
I happened to bump into the Loon yesterday (was nice to finally meet you in person Matt & also Dave. Wish I had more time for some drink's & s#%t's & giggles) & was saying that it would be awesome for alot of the Vic crew to make the trip.

yay for new wheels!!
*cough*shotguncokebottles!*cough*
Really though.
Is one day enough to get to sydney? Won't that be a 10 hour drive or something? Not to be a stick in the mud, but isn't that a fairly long time to be driving. (rhetorical). Besides, there's no way I can do the rowboat for 10 hours.
But thinking about driving up there, it will be a long drive with stops and etc.
Also does anyone have any ideas where abouts we well be staying. I'm geussing a small motel/caravan park close to the showground of the nats?
Just a few thought's I had...:???:
P.s. I think I may need to install a 5 speed for this!

It is a long drive and we will do it during the day. Early start with a few stop offs to stay rejuvenated.

Try doing it by yourself & without a radio!!!!
Done the trip earlier this week. Took me 9 1/4 hour's cruising. Left Loon's place at 2pm & walked through the door at home 11.15pm
So from Melb. to the nat's approx 9 hour's.
It doesn't take that long, especially if your in a convey with a few car's & having a good time.
Don't know about the stop's though. I reckon I can do it in one goj:
As far as where to stay. Look it up.
I've found a couple of Hotel's within about 5min's from the showground's. Not going to book anything just yet though.
The Nat's is on a Sunday so if you want to get back by Monday, you'll have to leave early & drive through the night.
Me, I'm staying the Sun. night.

what about staying in a hostel or something to reduce costs? but then again i guess staying at a hotel for a night wont be too bad :)
as for the drive, your right Tim, it'll go quick when you have people in a convoy having a good time!
DubSteve
24-12-2007, 08:22 AM
Depends how far you guys want to stay away from the venue. If you guys want to go into the city at all then you will have a 45 mins trip near Fairfield, but I'm 20 mins from the showground and 20 mins from the city :D

24-12-2007, 08:29 AM
I stayed in the city Here (http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/fichehotel/gb/nov/2977/fiche_hotel.shtml) and made the drive in 40 mins as traffic is fairly light first thing Sunday.

Melb to Syd is an easy drive if you do it during the day and have a good nights sleep. I've done it a few times and its not that bad at all! Try sydney to perth then complain lol
Straight run with just quick fuel stop you should make it under 10 hours easy to the City itself, staying further out in the "West" you will cut an hour off the trip.

I think something on the saturday would be best. but not too early, as I think after all the "partying like it's 1999" would have some people a little bit less bright eyed and bushy tailed than normal. ie hung over like a mofo.
Unless there were other plans for saturday day time, besides maybe washing our cars and prep-ing for the more serious few. It all depends on whats near the accomodation/show grounds. Also we could have a cruise to the showgrounds on teh morning like we did for the Vic DOVW. That way we can be like a 'posse' and can "reprazent' VWW.
Also sydneys siders, (esp those near the venue) can you guys suggest any cheap hotels/motels/hostels in the near by area? I'm happy to camp in a tent (I'm a uni student, give me a break) if there is a Caravan park near buy, this also will prob be the cheapest option i would think.

I live 15 minutes from Fairfield Showground. If you want a hostel you are not going to find one near by. Your best bet is to stay at Formule 1 hotel its the cheapest in the area.
If you want nightlife stay in the city somewhere and if you want to be close to the showground and some (rather poor) nightlife stay in Parramatta. I personally would rather stay in the city.

As for the F1 accommodation :
One at the intersection of Great Western Hwy and Cumberland Hwy at Wentworthville.
As for hotels, your best bet would either be one near at Parramatta (somewhere on Church Street near Parramatta Stadium) or Novotel at Homebush, if you want somewhere close-ish. They'd be a lot dearer than F1 though!

VW Nationals 2008 is MOVING
Over the past 20 years, the dedicated members and committee of Club Vee Dub Sydney Inc have been hosting The VW Nationals. Next year we will be celebrating the show's twenty-first birthday.
From next year we have elected to move the show away from the traditional Easter Holiday weekend. This will allow our members to take advantage of this break as an actual holiday, or attend religious functions without any interruptions from the running of the show.
This move will also offer advantages to our organising committee, give more time for sponsors to support the event, and allow a longer lead time in producing the show and organising the necessary support items for the event.
The new date for the VW Nationals 2008 show and shine will be Sunday May 25th, and for the following years will continue to be the 4th Sunday in May. Hopefully moving to this weekend will also allow many interstaters more flexibility to attend.
Several new plans are underway to make the event a full Volkswagen weekend.
Price structures and sponsorship will remain the same where possible, thus creating a value packed weekend and show.
We look forward to seeing you all at the VW Nationals 2008 next May.

so I rang that caravan park thats meant to be real close, and it turns out that it is actually a long term caravan park. hm. who knew! So it looks like the formula 1 motel in Casula will be the way to go, for me at least.
There was another caravan park in Bass Hill, except that was 70 bucks a night! maybe I read that wrong, but damn if it was!
just got through to F1 hotel, $74 p/N for Friday and Saturday, sunday $64 p/N, which makes it a $250 weekend, excluding petrol, and travel requirements, ie redbull and chocolate.
Surely there must be something cheaper? Hec, my car would be cheaper, and probably just as comfy!

Yea that ones $25 - $28 per night, per bed. for a 5 share room. Maybe we could get a whole room, only prob is tho, it's *IN* sydney, sure only a halfie away from the show grounds (ref. whereis.com) but the fact that's it's in the sydney, and we'll be getting there at night time (when it's dark, doesn't help with not getting lost) and parking may be a bit of an issue.
and. the traffic. sure it's a weekend. But I'd rather not have to worry about traffic and one way streets and stuff as much as possible! just my preference.
surely there must be some pubs out in the suburbs that have "hotels" attached to them? they're generally cheap. and dont' cost too much p/N either.
EDIT: just checked availiablitites for the hostel, on the time we're going. $75 per person, for a 5 share room.

Smithfield road, fairfield west I believe. I think the closest hotel I could find was in casula (i think) that was the F1 hotel, but that was more expensive than 100 p/n i think. the bass hill caravan park is your next best bet, ranges from $69 to $110 p/n i think. it's in Bass Hill, which is on the HUme hwy, and not too far away. phone is 02 9724 9670.

Hi Dominic,
At this stage I have a lot of cabins available, so the possibility for the cabins to be side by side is highly possible.
The possible offer I can provide is free linen hire for all the beds needed.

Really looking forward to this not only the Nat's but the road trip too!
I'm thinking along the line's of staying at F1 Hotel.
Very close to the Nat's (Less than 20min's/10km's away) & also right as the end of the Hume Hwy which mean's no fighting any traffic.
I hate traffic:mad:

Well the way I see it if I was taking a mk1 worst case scenario it's going to cost at least $250 in fuel ($100 each way & alittle to get around!)
Will be cheaper in the Audi for sure. Maybe cost $180-200.
$140+ for accomodation(without sharing. Obviously cheaper sharing) + food & drink for 4 day's of travel.
For the sake of $70 a night accomodation, I think I'll stay in a hotel that's very easy to get to & don't have to travel all over Sydney, plenty of parking, not too far away from the showground's & close to some pub's.
It's also not too far away from Western Sydney International Dragway! Hopefully there's something going on there as well.

Fairfield is about 20-30 minutes drive to WSID in Eastern Creek. They have "Wicked Wednesdays" where you can just bring your car along and go at it down the strip. Doesn't cost too much IIRC.

That's pretty much what I was banking on. + $50 bucks on food going up and back (expensive servo food prices etc) then plus about 70 or 80 bucks on food while I'm up there. SO yea. That's atleast $350 close to $400 including event costs.
So if I can save some money by camping, I'm up for that.

A powered site at the Bass hill is $30 per night. That's the cheapest they have, and fit a caravan on them, so room should be enough for 4 or so peeps to tent it. that's 90 bucks for the accom for the weekend, and is splitable between people. so yea, cheap. I like this option - anyone else up for tenting??
actually, I've just had an Idea, does anyone in sydney have a caravan??

ok guys its getting closer to the time, we need a show of hands on who will be renting hotel rooms or cabins,
the most realistic options are bass hill caravan park or formule 1 hotel, both are no more than 10-15min drive from the showgrounds and both are cheap ($65-75 per night) i would like to book soon and i think for a bulk booking we could request to make it cheaper, although i will have to be in my own cabin or room (missus is tagging along :(), if we book together we might save on costs
im looking towards the F1 motel.. whos down with me??

The distance doesn't really matter when you're crusing along with mates!
But yeas. That will probably be important for thoe wanting to wash thier cars.
I'm not planning on doing such, just depends how dirty my ncar gets on the way up.
It would be good regardless to have a "gtg" on saturday, to meet everyone, imo.

Here, Here Dom.
If this year's a flop (which it's very much starting to look that way!), you can count me out for next year.
Plan on only doing the DOVW SA next year & catch up with some family friend's & maybe DOVW Vic. Wouldn't mind making the trip to Valla when ever that is.

OT but,
I'll agree with you on rattle's & tyre roar. They actually very bad.
Jetta's & Golf's seam to have a inherant problem of turning there rear tyres lumpy & chewing out wheel bearing's. Aparantly they redesigned the Golf 6 rear suspension!

just tell me where i gotta be and when and i can make it happen.
Getting there too late would suck. Usually the trip takes a good 10 hours or so although arriving in sydney during peak hour would suck more than leaving melb during peak ! :P
