Hi guys
Hope everyone is doing well.

After one s**t day with bad things going wrong left and right my rear diff just gave way while I was driving.

05/10 built R36 with 70k on it.

Where should I be looking to find a rear diff and what will be the damage.

Prompt replies are appreciated as I need to get this back on the road.

Thank you

How have you diagnosed it's failure mate. Give us a bit more to work with. There has to be damaged cars all around the world for parts, if that's what's needed.
Hope tomorrow goes better for you.

Gavin

Was driving and there was some noise started to come from the back end, first it sounded like a tyre rubbing on the guard then it went away didn't think much....

Soon after I take a right turn and hear a bit of a clicking/whining sound and then just all sort of sounds, got the car to my mechanic he checked a few things and goes your rear diff is gone.

So that's where I stand, so hopefully tomorrow will start my search to buy one. Thought to ask here maybe someone can point me where to find one.

This seems to be the second reported diff failure in a 3C Passat posted on here.

Odd, since the same diff is fitted to several other models, and could be considered bulletproof. It doesn't do a whole lot of work, since the cars it's fitted to are mostly front-drive biased.

Will be the same diff as a Tiguan, just swap the Haldex module over, providing it's not the Haldex module that has failed.

As an aside, the only thing that does actually kill VW diffs is when someone dumps the diff oil, and overfills the Haldex coupling because they haven't sought to work out which drain and fill plugs do what.

Waah954
07-05-2015, 10:43 PM
Umai thanks for the reply can you explain more to me on how dumping the diff oil and 're filling can cause this.

So tiguan can fit the car and there is no diffrence in year models 08-10 r36 and wagon/sedan ?

Umai Naa!!
07-05-2015, 11:05 PM
People have been known to drain the diff oil, and pump new diff oil into the Haldex coupling, thinking they're one and the same unit.

Diff blows, and Haldex misbehaves.

Apparently Passat diff assembly is uniquie to Passat. Ratios are different between different engines, too.

Best off finding someone who's wrecking an R36, and buy the diff out of that.

Part number is the same for '09, '10 and '11. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding one. The R36 was pretty popular, and people do find interesting ways to write them off.

Was just reading some horror stories on the tiguan it seems a few people had problems with the rear diff....

Any chance we can get a picture of the diff and haldex coupling oil filling hole.

Oh also can you confirm is the haldex inside the diff, do I need to replace that cause from my understanding (which is limited) you can't replace the diff with the old haldex!

Wagon can fit a sedan ?

Thanks for all the help, looks like I will be on the phone all day tomorrow [emoji14]

Plugs:

16205
16206

You can swap the module over easily enough, providing the coupling itself hasn't had an internal failure.

Wagon and sedan will be the same.

Yeah thanks for that, I did check it out this morning.
They have a section with PARTS NO LONGER AVAILABLE and the rear diff is listed.

But I did call them and they claimed they have one but wanted an exchange for mine and 3.5k

Unless I provided him with the sticker code that's on my unit.

Waah954
12-05-2015, 12:11 PM
Yeah will let him know.
So don't think he will need to replace oil as the car it came off only done 5k kms.

Thanks for all the help.
Will update you guys once it's fitted.

Hey Waah954,
I'll be interested to found out what had gone wrong with the old diff? Do you get your mechanic to pull the back plate off to have a look inside?

Waah954
19-05-2015, 03:59 PM
Oh yeah sorry didn't think anyone was keen on to know what happen.

Keep the story short it's correct there was no oil in the diff and you can say it's bullet proof cause it done 16-17k kms before it died.

ALR36
19-05-2015, 04:05 PM
was there leak or someone forget to check the oil levels

Waah954
19-05-2015, 04:09 PM
Long story shot when I done the major my mechanic drained the diff had to step out to get a part told the apprentice to fill the diff... Seems like he only filled the haldux

19-05-2015, 04:15 PM
Cool thanks, as this is the first diff that I'm aware that had failed.

Gives the rest some comfort to know it was human error, and to be vigilant when having the oil changed. Hopefully doesn't sour the experience at all for you of enjoying your R :)

You are correct I should have informed everyone about my findings as it would help others, just like I have recieved help.

Next time.

kamold

Wasn't meant as a criticism at all :)
Just makes other owners a bit nervous hearing your story. These are fairly complicated cars and now they are out of warranty some failures can be expensive to remedy.
It's reassuring to know that the diffs are built strong enough to run without lubrication for 10-15k :)

brad
20-05-2015, 08:27 AM
So did the mechanic wear the cost of replacement?

Waah954
20-05-2015, 09:32 AM
Yeah he did, his top guy.

brad
20-05-2015, 10:22 AM
Yeah he did, his top guy.

Fixing what he stuffed up doesn't make him a top guy.

Fixing without question & with a smile on his face does.

Waah954
20-05-2015, 10:26 AM
He could have easily lied said the diff just went.

Let's not act like all mechanics out there are honest.

Umai Naa!!
20-05-2015, 01:04 PM
At the end of the day, he made a boo-boo, he fixed it at his own expense, and if you're still happy to go there, then everyone's a winner :)

The thing to take away from this, is that anyone who's veiwed the thread has probably learnt something new about their own car.

Waah954

It's the electronically-controlled viscous coupling on the front of the rear diff. Needs to have it's oil changed every 60K on <2010 models, or every 3 years on 2010> models.

Fuse box under the panel at the side of the dash in the cabin? There should be a diagram in the owners manual with all the fuse placements.
