View Full Version : QLD Lakeside Breakfast laps- 18th April 2015

This is my first time running this so bear with me. :emo_baghead:
Any newbies, I'll be asking you guys to hunt me down on the day so I can give you a run down on the way I think you should go on track and also depending on numbers, myself and possibly a couple of other of the more experienced lappers will give you a couple of laps or so to get an on track perspective
Please be aware that QLD Raceways does monitor the forum and as such, any posts regarding activities that breach the rules of the track/happy laps will be noted by the staff and you may be banned from the events.
Also please provide the colour, make and model of your car when requesting a spot so we can confirm who is out there.
I will then send you the payment details so we can have it all paid up and sorted on time.
Lakeside Park again for breakfast ($35) which will be payable to me as i have to pre-pay to book the event for us now
The Breakfast starts at 7:30am sharp and we should be out on the track by 8:15am after a safety briefing at 8am.
Please be there by 7:15am.
Rules:
Note: This is not a dedicated track event. People have been warned previously about their driving conduct and, as a result, we have been pulled off early.
No protective gear allowed (i.e. no helmet or race suit). At a minimum, please wear shorts, t-shirt and closed-in shoes with a grippy sole.
No overtaking on corners, only on the straight. If a vehicle slows down and indicates that you overtake on the back section of the track, you may do so at your own discretion, however the responsibility is on the overtaking driver to do it safely. IF IN DOUBT, DO NOT OVERTAKE.
If you are not overtaking anyone on the main straight, please stay to the left of the track and let any driver that is consistently on your tail overtake you. You'll know this if you've been watching your mirrors. To be overtaken safely, maintain your speed and line. Do not brake or accelerate, just hold your line at a reasonable, steady speed to allow the overtaking driver to execute the manoeuvre safely. If you think you are actually quicker on the track, then you should be able to come up to that car again the next time you reach the main straight, and then the roles will be reversed: The original overtaking driver should now let the other car overtake.
All vehicles that enter must be road-worthy and registered.
Passengers are welcome, however anyone entering the track (drivers, passengers and those splitting the driving) must have a wristband, which means that track fees are payable by everyone in the car (but you get a delicious breakfast, which is BONUS!)
Please let me know if you have any food allergies/vegetarianism etc so i can see if they can source something suitable.
Menu:
Toast
Egg and Capsicum omlette
Crispy bacon
Gourmet chipolatas
Baked beans
Fried tomato
Mushrooms
Tea & coffee
I am having this open to forum contributors only and you must be in a Euro car. Anyone can come and passenger with you. I am capping the number at the first 35 attendees (drivers and/or passengers combined) to make the costs associated with the event still suitable while having a good number of cars to stop traffic problems out on the track.
When the main list is full, members will be added to the reserve list. If someone pulls out, the first person on the reserve list will be moved up to the main list. Unfortunately, if you do not make it on the main list, then we cannot accommodate your car at the event, but other members might be keen to have you passenger and/or drive with them. Any forum members remaining on the reserve list by the event date will be placed directly on the main list for the next event. Please check the next event details when they are posted to ensure that you can indeed attend if you are put on the main list.
Please post to indicate that you would like to attend with the colour, make and model of your vehicle and how many people you will be bringing with you. You can be anonymous on the forum but you cannot be anonymous on the track.
Directions for entry:
Drive across the causeway, then follow the road to the right around the back of the track, then enter the tunnel on your left. Turn right after exiting the tunnel toward the group parking on the grassy area in front of the big yellow building.

I have enough track time in March to sit this one out.
As for driver instructions on lakeside, this video is amongst the best of em, and coincidentally from VW. Instructions like looking through the corners, peripheral vision, where to start applying throttle, etc, are key to lapping at pace safely.

Just be aware that each club runs a different kind of happy laps.
The downshift laps is basically a carpark until you hit the last corner, then it's driftoooooooooooooo and drag racing up the main straight.

Noted, I'm a very reserved driver, fully intend on allowing a big pile of overtakes on the straight, I'd rather chase a better drives lines then sit up the front and feel them judging me missing the apex by a km :P

some actions on the lakeside timeattack last sat.
golf 6 r with Michelin 225 40 18 PSS (went greasy after 3-4 hard laps), stock suspension, stock brakes, stock spring, etc... I had to change my approach to braking point.
my tail almost came out once when I did late braking into corner like I used to do in the previous car with bilstein pss10 coil and upgraded brakes :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzitYDjyPKg
hopefully the clip would help some for next month's HL in terms of lines (although not consistent and plenty of room for improvements).

Do you have to retrain the brain how to handle the car?

thx Karl. golf 6 r awd... not so much as it is fwd biased. but straight line traction was obvious.
did not have enough chance to explore the car's braking and cornering at the last happy laps, so the first and second sessions at timeattack were a learning experience and had to adjust my driving (especially on braking point) to keep the car on the black stuff :) driving on green stuff is no no at lakeside :P

Nat, you big girls blouse, you braked for the kink, haha. Really nice lines though mate, others should take note. I started taking a very similar line out of karousel and over the crest as it minimised tyre spin, not sure if it's quicker than sticking hard right, but made the exit to the bridge more straight.

LOL, no confidence in the car to go flat out over the kink yet! not at the current stock suspension height where weight transfer is amplified at each section of the track.
those still on stock brake fluid, I can say that changing yours to high temp one, I use penrite racing brake fluid rbf600, does make a huge difference even on stock pads and brake lines.
but mine has a small mod to help cooling down the brake area.

There is always risk. I was right behind the Bimmer that put it into the wall at the last one. Just go at your own pace. No one will hassle you, no one will be trying to throw you off your lines...just get a little bit more comfortable each time! :) That said, no, there is no insurance for an event like this. Come and see. If it looks like the risk is something that you don't feel you can stomach with your car, no one will think less of you! Hell, I know that in the last few years I have certainly had moments where I wondered what the hell I was doing with my car out there...

how often do you get an opportunity to do these events.

I haven't done "happy laps" before but do 4 to 5 track days at QR & lakeside a year for the last 10yrs in my road car without incident nor recall seeing anyone else. I accept the risk and enjoy. Sometimes you have to just do it
nat225
11-04-2015, 11:12 PM
happy laps event is a much safer (closed environment) enthusiastic drive to do than driving enthusiastically on mt nebo / mee / etc...
the vwwatercooled happy laps at lakeside that i have been attending to, since january 2012, there have only been a few accidents (cars came off the track) and i think all 3 were RWD cars (lotus, old bmw 3 series and new bmw m135i).
PLUS, if you want to learn to drive better, in terms of car handling, cornering, etc.. this is probably one of the best value events you can do.
come, have a look, join and play by the rules = WINNER :D
RoknRob
12-04-2015, 08:04 AM
I agree with Nat. In my mind this is way safer than a spirited road drive where you don't know what's around the next bend... Animal, stopped car, downed tree, you name it. Besides, the speed is limited at Happy Laps, right guys? ;)

Hi Guys,
Is it OK for me to just come and be a spectator as I know all places are full.It would be good to meet you all and get some advise on car set up etc. My concerns about insurance are based on the fact that my Audi is my living.I drive 2000k + per week and to loose her for a day could cost me $1k or more,so that is why I have to sure about things.
Gav ,it looks like you,ve excelled at organising this one great work.

I'm the king of risk at these events as I'm not even driving my own car!
This is probably the best entry level event you can get into as there's not a great deal of traffic out there - the Downshift C&C and other copycat events which have been popping up of late all have quite a number of cars out there and it feels a bit claustrophobic at times.
It's worth coming down and spectating for the half hour, might inspire you enough to get out there next time.

Try ride shot gun with one of the more experienced out there, Nat runs in TimeAttack and knows the track exceptionally well at a Happy Lap and race pace. Drive within your ability, learn the lines, braking points and camber/grip changes of the circuit and it'll be as safe, or moreso than any road you'll drive on, albeit in a more controlled environment.

If you want to go on track it'll be $20 to get the wristband, which means breakfast as well. You can ride with me if you like.

It's a shame you can't make this one. Just be aware the Euro day the day after will be a whole different kettle of fish. A wider variety of cars (RWD/FWD/AWD) and they are allowing up to 100 cars on track per session, which is just ridiculous.
Happy laps is good fun...just look after yourself and there is always the pit if you loose your confidence or feel like you're not keeping up...it's only $35

Is it the usual long sleeve shirt and long pants deal?
Unrelated note, should I be pulling my air filter out for mad powah on the track day?

Hi Gavin,
Thank you for organising the morning. I really enjoyed my return to some track time after many many years. Been thinking about the lines I took and wondering if there are any images of recommended lines for lakeside available?. I can only find the odd written guide but nothing on a map.

Here's one from a VW driver training day I came across.

And one of me during timeattack:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6boqgAeHtwA
Eastern loop is faster by hugging the inside (RHS) of the circuit rather than some double apex or holding it straight ahead with a late turn / single late apex. Reason being is the distance traveled is further and the marginal increase in speed doesn't account for the extra distance. Such a line isn't applicable in happy laps as the cones are too far up the hill which, IMO, makes the corner marginally more dangerous than it needs to be. But does give sufficient room for ppl to exit the track.
Tips: Use the track width, look through the corner, let the car flow, smooth is fast all that stuff.
