Hi,
There's so far 4 of us as regulars in the QLD Timeattack series held at Lakeside and QR. Lakeside is ran on Saturdays, QR on Thursdays with 6 events at each location over the year. There's classes pending the level of modification. Typically the cars are more track oriented than street cars with many being dedicated race or timeattack cars.

I would be keen to come out to watch you guys before participating. What kind of tyres are you running and where are the best places to get them?

I'll have to get some new tires.

For this year 2 will be running the Yokohama A050R, last year they ran the Yoko AD08R.
Yokohama Tyres | Racing Tyres From Yokohama: ADVAN A050 R Spec Sizes and Reviews (http://www.yokohama.com.au/Tyres/ADVAN-A050-R-Spec.aspx)

I'm still running some old tyres which should last another couple of events and will decide what I'll run after feedback from the other two. Currently I run a Bridgestone semi on the front with Toyo R888 on the rear. They've probably gone off, but still grip better than road tyres so will run them into the ground. Depending on the lap time improvement the other 2 get with the A050's, I'll decide if I run them too, or look for something a bit a cheaper.

Yokohama is the sponsor of world timeattack in australia (and Japan I think) so a lot of guys run them.

From what I understand, there is only one distributor of the A050 in QLD, they're at Albion.

050's on my Golf R were 2 seconds quicker @ Lakeside over "regular" Semi slicks- it was soft compound mind you.

the only one that comes close is the Z221 -

You will be in for a shock going from the R888's . ENJOY!

Thanks Guy, yeah the R888's are on the rear as they were pretty ordinary on the front. The fronts are Bridgestone RE55s, they've been good. I don't believe they are still made/availale, have only searched the internet though haven't been able to find any current pricing.

Will you be doing any timeattack?

From a quick look over the 2WD lap records, If the A050's are 2secs quicker than the AD08R's, that'll make Alan quickest FWD to have competed in timeattack QLD. He's currently 10th, I'm 16th for FWD I think. Hope to nudge up a few places by end of season.

I'm preparing for the year with a few changes. First is a change of tyre. I secured some A050s and will aim to get these fitted shortly. The new brakes have been fitted and rims with staggered offsets have landed. The boys at PP did a really good spanner check last week, new fluid changes and new plugs.

Taking it Ken next week for a once over and to take some camber out of the rear.

Looking forward to seeing just how good these A050s really are. I'd be interested to hear what Ben thought. I think he gave them a scrub in at Lakeside?

I could just start to feel the potential for really good lateral grip a couple of times, so I think I'm going to need a better seat and a harness!

Great news on the wing!
How long will it take to put it together at the track? And how will you fit 4 track rims in as well?

The rotors are only 345x32, a perfect fitment for the rims which are RS055Rs 18x8.5 ET35.

I'd say it has something to do with the aero/widened fender kit. Anyone running it seems to have the MK6R front end.

Yes, the load transfer certainly highlights where a wider track and lower centre of gravity can come in handy. It seems to be on acceleration judging by the position of the car in the corner but you would expect this to happen under braking right ?

I did check out a few of those pics, thanks for that.

Loving the A050s, fortunately there were no photos to highlight the big off on that turn earlier, took a little while to get the psi right on these, but once the were right they hook up beautifully.

Looking forward to Lakeside on these now. Just need more power ;)

Back on track at QR to dust off the cobwebs. Did a PB, but need to get corner speeds up. Feeling a bit rusty. I didn't manage to get the wing on, but definitely at Lakeside. Here are a couple of videos. The first one is an iPhone recording as my GoPro wasn't working. It's a 0:59.70
The second one is slower, but it's a GoPro view. I'm not happy with the Medium view. I'm gonna go back to Wide to show more of the driver.

Yup, your corner speeds were down quite a bit, turn 2 in the silver polo is 120kph+, compared to your 115kph. That's all good though, work up to the grip levels and all that stuff.

Is your camera mounted to the seat head rests? It's got much less shake than I get from a head rest mount. Just had a look at the hall of fame for lakeside 2WD, it seems you're the quickest FWD, 0.01s ahead of a civic.

I'm currently something like 23rd for FWD, though hopefully I can address that be the end of the season. Lots of Civic's between us.

After this weekend, next round at lakeside is August 8th. I know I have a wedding to attend in August, it'd better not be this date. I might be late to the wedding if it is...

After this weekend, next round at lakeside is August 8th. I know I have a wedding to attend in August, it'd better not be this date. I might be late to the wedding if it is...

Cool! What about QR? I'll check

Makes you realize the development that goes into those top tier cars hey. 3 secs on a 2.5km odd km circuit is huge. Power, handling and brakes only gets you so far.

so today was another session of attacking time...

did not do any PB as i went easy on the eastern loop. there was an oil spill from a mx5 on the eastern loop section of the track in the session prior to mine. i had a small slip moment on the first lap, so subsequently i went easy.

here are of the best times of the day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BradY_Ggo_g

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl5ys9zbetM

before track, oil level just under max, after 30 hot laps, still just under max. conclusion: no oil use :)

Current mods:
- Bluefin Stg 1 + GFB DV
- H&R sport springs + Superpro 24mm RSB + Ground Control front camber mounts + OEM DCC in sport mode
- Unibrace UB
- Advan AD08R 235 40 18 on Rays VR-G2 18x8 +50
- Front QFM A1RM brake pads and Penrite racing brake fluid, with the rest brake components all stock

During 3rd session after 4th lap which incidentally was my fastest lap. I really think I was on track to beat it heading into turn 6. Pressures at 30psi.

I'd put those good tyres on for next outing and flick the knackered ones.

timeattack does it 10 cars at a time and group is based on lap times.

Re brake temps. I'm running new DBA T3 4000 series 312mm rotors with Brembo 4 pot calipers and QFM A1RM pads on the front.

So, swapping the wheels back from the semi slicks to the daily's after Lakeside, I checked the heat paint markings on the new rotors. To my surprise, the green paint, rated at 460c has turned white which means it's exceeded that temp, though the Orange (550c) and Red (630c) are still those colours. "The ideal temperature condition for high performance brake pads and rotors is between 458 oC and 550 oC which is when the peak friction condition is achieved."

Thermo-graphic Heat Paint on CLUBSPEC & HEAVY DUTY Series rotors - Disc Brakes Australia (http://www.dba.com.au/tech-article-t027-thermo-graphic-heat-paint-4000-%E2%80%93-5000-series/)

"my clamp meat thingy", haha, I have no idea what you're talking about. My left side is an off-white greeny colour, the right is white, which is consistent with yours, albeit at lower temps.

I guess being DGS rather than manual may contribute a little to it. As would brake pad compound according to the DBA site:

"If your driving conditions force the Orange paint to change to yellow then you should consider more a specialized high temperature pad compound, review the car setup or alter your driving style. When exposed to temperatures in excess of 630 oC (Red paint) permanent fatigue and stress concentration is greatly accelerated which may result in premature cracking or warping of the disc rotor. DBA does not warrant disc rotors that have been subjected to motor sport use."

This is why I upgraded from the Remsa pads, they started out as being adequate, but deteriorated after numerous heat cycles. Would have been interesting to know what temps they were doing.

Good to have that measure though, and to know that I'm operating within the window.

BEGINNERS AT TIME ATTACK - QLD
If you are new to the track then our format is ideal for you. We run capped run groups to keep lap traffic down and the groups are organized in lap time order. If you are new you will be in the slow run group (just let me know when you book). Another big safety advantage is we only allow overtaking on the straights, that way you don’t have to worry about anyone overtaking you through a corner when you are concentrating on getting the best line. The event caters from the full blown Time Attack cars (and we do get the best in the state), to the everyday unmodified street car. There is also the beginners driver training option to get you kicked off to a good start.

Don't let Nat scare you. I ran Penrite Super on a mostly stock setup at Time Attack for a while and didn't have any serious issues. The main thing is being conscious of the pedal underneath you--if it becomes spongey, it's a sign that your fluid is getting to the point that it's had enough for the day.

cheers fella's, i just had chat with Matt at brakes direct and will be calling in to see him tomorrow regarding some remsa pads and racing fluid...

Remsa will be adequate for occasional track use, I ran them for a while on both Polo's, red (312mm rotor) and silver (288mm rotor), though I was probably on their limit in the red car and exceeded their limit on the silver - though I'm running semi slicks... So, like with the fluid, best to not drive within a whisker of their ability, roll off the throttle that little bit earlier, i.e. run it to 95% braking rather than 100%, that little bit will ensure you don't overheat it or out brake yourself. It's the peak spike in temp when you've overcommitted that that overheats the brakes and tyres.

I've got QFM A1RM's on the track polo now and they are great for my application. I think Nat may have pushed their limit on his car, so may be trial and error. The error doesn't mean binning it, just the brake pedal will lack feel for days there after, assuming it comes back to good feel. I've never had issues with brake fluid and when I've overcooked the pads, it's lacked feel rather than clamping ability. Though once they've cooled and you drive the next day, they've lacked clamping.

Afternoons are generally more mellow at Time Attack with fewer cars and more time in the morning to prepare. But in the heat of the summer, the mornings are better for lap times. Afternoons are better in winter, as track temps are too low in the morning. I was expecting a hot day, which was why I originally booked AM. When I saw the rain forecast, I decided that a clean, dry track will win over a few extra degrees of ambient temp. But you never know...it's always a gamble.

never mind the car names. there is a VW Poli GTI in group B 😎

best to have enough rest too after your late work. lakeside can be demanding and requires good concentration.

I drive a VW Poli, whatever that is. Yeah Paul hasn't changed the car type from last year for Nat.

I'm in group B, yikes. I'll be the slowest in that group me thinks. Just hoping to run in the low 63's, not sure I'll get 62's with this new turbo set up... Will be a good gauge for the new tyres, and suspension set-up is now back to how I originally had it.

Party time.

Just happened to pick my phone up as your message came through. It's always great to have new people to share the experience with, hopefully is was a good experience for you. The afternoon ran really smooth, they don't always go so well (e.g cars dropping oil or worse). Paul Ruzic and QR do run the event very well.

hey guys, any contacts to approach regarding limited slip differentials?

Alan, very keen to hear your feedback and comparison on the plate diff, though I can't really justify the cost. I've driven the red car daily this week and I think to make it more streetable that a LSD would help.

I'm considering to sell the silver polo to run the red one daily.

i don't know whether you feel like being guinea pig or not mate but this looks like a good price. could be the old adage, buy cheap, buy twice though...

Audi A3:1.8/T,TDI,VW, 02J Limited Slip Diff Conversion/ LSD Kit Traction Grip | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A3-1-8-T-TDI-VW-02J-Limited-Slip-Diff-Conversion-LSD-Kit-Traction-Grip-/251796459289?hash=item3aa03d0f19:g:gyMAAOSwnDZT9CV j)

if you need any help with any shipping from the UK i might be able to sort something with my folks...

edit: maybe not, i quote:

"Those have been notoriously unreliable and actually damaging"

"I tried a 4 of these many years ago, all failed within 2 years, 3 took the trannys with them."

From memory (which is constantly fading) the ring gear is riveted onto the OEM diff...so they will have to be drilled out.
Best to be done on a drill press. A la...
