Car is booked in for Clutch plate replacements on Jan 12. Whilst it is with Lennock Motors, they are going to have to investigate where my oil is going... Changed the oil on Dec 14 about a week after I got the car, and since then have used another 5litre container of oil. I just bought another container as I know It will ask me for more oil before Jan 12. Thank god I bought it from a Dealer and it has 3 months or 5000km warranty. Surely 5litres of oil consumed in about 3 weeks is way too much.....

Far out ^ thats going through some oil - and no thats not normal / acceptable. The engine is either burning it (and at a very high rate) or you have yourself a decent leak....or both.

Do you notice blue smoke out the exhaust on cold starts or when you put your foot down?

Also make sure you are buying an approved VW/Audi/Skoda oil with the "approved 504/507" label. All these oils are upwards of about $70 for 5L

Nulon is NOT VW approved. When I looked at a container it says "Suitable " for VW which is not "Approved " for.

The 504.507 approved oils are full synthetic

Look at Penrite Enviro+ Castrol Professional III, (Dealer oil) Shell Helix Ultra Plus for approved oils. There are others from Mobil etc but NOT from Nulon

The Penrite is available at Repco, Supercrap and Autobarn

They too stingy to submit it for approval as it costs them to have it done

If its a petrol engine you can probably use 502/505 APPROVED oil but still NOT Nulon. Read what the handbook says it needs for 15000 and 12 month services.

Castrol Castrol Edge 5W-30 A3/B4
SAE 5W-30 50200/50500

SAE 5W-40 50200/50500

SAE 5W-40 50200/50500

Plus oils from Mobil, Penrite, Liqui Moli, Shell and others as long as the have APPROVED for VW on the container

Ever thought of contacting the previous owner regarding the various issues you are having with this car?

If you're using the wrong oil, forget it. They won't help you.

Oil MUST be 504/507-compliant 5W30 full synthetic.

I have found service docket with the car doco that says in 2011 the owner had asked the Skoda dealer to investigate excess oil usage. They said was within normal parameters. I dont think mine is within "normal" parameters anymore. I bought the car from a dealer in Melbourne so plan to have the problem looked at and hopefully rectified within the 5000 km 3 months warranty that comes with the car.

I actually had not put any Nulon oil in the car yet, so was able to return it in place of the Castol Edge.. which does say VW approved on the back of he bottle.

Dropped the car off this morning for Clutch Plates... interestingly though, it has not asked for more oil in the last week or so.... its a little strange that it has just suddenly stopped drinking oil.

Clutch Plates replaced.. all seems good.. Part 1 of the oil consumption test underway. They drained the sump and discovered 3.6 litres left (so I assume the oil light was about to come on again soon). They refilled it and asked me to return in 1000km (part 2) to check the remaining quantity. We will see what happens then I guess.

Skoda are running an oil consumption test for 1000km. Took the car away to Wollongong on the weekend and had to add 1 litre of oil at around 480km and another around the 870km or so. See image.... took it back yesterday and as I have added oil (what choice did I have being so far from Canberra and I did ask if the light came on could I add oil and was told yes ok) and we are starting the test again... but from what i can see from the last 1000km test.. I used in excess of 2 litres of oil.... can only be a rebuild/replacement on the horizon.

Because its using oil a lot, or because of Clutch plates? Are you getting another VAG vehicle ?

They topped up my oil again, and after 307km.. the oil light is back on..... the back of the car has a nice layer of black oil on it... I dont think there is any doubt that its a rebuild or replacement required. Was told unofficially that it could be 7-8k..... Used Car Warranty to the rescue! They asked me not to add oil, but to bring it back as soon as the oil light came on.. well it came on Friday night.. and now its a long weekend... doh!

There is either something very wrong with the engine or a substancial oil leak if your continually losing that much oil in such a short space of time.

No huge puddles of oil on my garage floor... so I am going with engine is "Farked"..... Just want to get it rebuilt/replaced ASAP

Checked in with Lennock Skoda today.. and after 611km, it was down by 1.7 litres of oil. They are speaking to Skoda about it and what their recommendations will be..... stay tuned... if you are not already bored with my story.

Quote for a rebuild from Skoda is in at $8951. The company that has to pay for it under warranty are starting to squirm... trying all sorts of ways to get out of it... even saying that my car has now done 5,200 km since they sold it to me and its not covered anymore. But I have proof that I started this process with Skoda dealer in late Dec - Early Jan when it had only done around 1,500 km... Also they are saying that can get it done cheaper in Melbourne, so they may want the car shipped back to Melb for repairs.... sounds like just one big nightmare............... ** sigh **

Hi notflyingscot.

Back on the road and all appears to be good... still full of oil after 1000 kms...

ashmannnn
08-06-2015, 08:29 AM
but sadly not full of oil after 5000km... needed a litre or so... rang the dealer... was told that i should expect a little oil usage before the first service... so does that also apply to a new car? Does a new car use a litre of oil before the first service? I dont think so... any one have any thoughts? I have emailed the dealer in writing with my concerns..... guess we will see at the first service... :-(

That's not so good to hear. Touch wood but have not had to put a teaspoon of oil into ours between services to date. No comfort to you I'm afraid!

no.. but glad yours is running ok..... I am sure its normal despite what Lennock say...

bobski

Yeah, some seem to use more oil. Not sure if its how the engine is run in or bad luck. Has yours been modified? Your sig seems to indicate more power?

Our 118tsi is still full after 11000kms. Run in without any attention paid to the run in schedule (first 2 thousand Ks a drive to coffs harbour and back - which is supposedly not ideal).

To paraphrase the owners manual:

Your engine may use more oil than normal while running-in. It is recommended that initially you check the oil at every fuel fill. After running-in your engine may use up to 500ml per 1000km and this is considered normal.
