View Full Version : any advice on 6R 77tsi power upgrades?
Hello, I currently have a 13.5 6R with the 1.2 77kw 6 speed Manual (sport pack, comfort pack).
While obviously it's never gonna be fast fast, it's just much to slow as it is. It's just not worth trading it for a GTI, as it's only required as a daily.
I'd like advice please on what sort of mods are currently available for this model. I'm in south east Queensland... Not touching the internals but would consider a bigger turbo.
I have priced and was considering ABT's range, but a dime off $2200 for a chip? Surely I can get better value for money elsewhere. Budget engine wise, $3K, but that's not a ceiling figure.
Brakes,Suspension will come later.
Please also understand that I'm from the raw power old school club, no injection, no ecu, no boost (also no pistons lol). So I don't understand what's involved, and what is meant by stage 1/2/3 tuning, so a noob crash course would be much appreciated.
Lil pocket rocket is so fun to drive tho, and Im now a life VWphile.
Thanks in advance.

I can do stage2 on your Polo for $880, though I'm in SA.
Thanks Transporter, I've no problems going for a drive.
Umm, forgive my lack of knowledge, but what would a Stage 2 tune be?
Is it just a re-mapping of ecu?
What sort of power/torque increases could I expect?
Would still be reliable for the drive back to Qld?
I should have mentioned in my OP that fuel economy is of no concern, as with driveablitly...to a degree.

Stage 1 is: Stock everything, remapped to give more boost, fuel, different ignition timing etc (all model dependant ofc)
Stage 2 is: Stock turbo, internals, etc. Aftermarket downpipe (off turbo) with 100 cel cat for petrols and DPF delete for diesels, intake.
Stage 3 is: Big turbo and associated extras (fuel pumps, emissions deletes etc)
I'd give Gavin from Custom Code a buzz, see what he can do!
DNA Tuning as well.
Stage 2 should be a remap and a high flow downpipe / cat. $880 is a good price if that is what Transporter is offering.
Thanks Mysticality, appreciate run down. I wasn't to sure if it was a varying ecu tune or general engine.
I don't know how much more boost you can get out of these tiny turbos, but any thing will help, even a couple pound extra.
Cheers
Yeah Brad, I'll be checking John's figures out also, be you are right Transporter has a very competitive price.

DNA's prices are about the same as Transporters.

Never done one and I'd be reluctant to take anyone's money for tuning the 1.2. VFM/BFB factor would be too low for me to be comfortable with.
Was always going to be cheaper to buy the faster car to start with, unfortunately.

Your best "power" upgrade might be to pension off the standard doughy dampers & fit Koni Sport. I did that to a mate's 77tsi and the increase in corner speed that you could carry was fantastic.

How much faster, where do you stop?
Some people like smaller engines and want just a bit more power, they know that they can't break into the supercar category. ;)

I don't think half a dozen or so KW for close to $1000 is worth it. So on principle even though I can, I won't do it. I can do the 1600 16v MK4, even at cost it's not worth it.
I agree it's a fine line to tread.

Oh, for a half a dozen I wouldn't do it as well. :)

Just had the APR engineers here for three weeks working on the 1.2 in both Polo & Golf forms.
How does 20kw & 40nm (hubs) and 2 seconds faster 0-100 sound as good gains? (on 98 octane fuel) we were certainly impressed!
