Pretty sure the mid muffler is just a straight through pipe with a baffle around it. So no effect on performance.

Driving a car hard and using the engine is hardly thrashing it. If you aren't doing this fairly regularly in a polo gti can't really see the point in owning one.

Got the issue on my brand new one, now with 800km on it. Seems to be a bit random so not sure how to replicate it, particularly as I am trying to keep the rpms down and load off it for a few more...
