Tailgate Struts - replacements?

Our Tig is now getting onto 5 years old, still running great and still love it (in fact best car I have ever owned).

The gas struts for the tailgate are now had it, so looking for replacements and wondering if anyone else has done/knows a good source (I have not tried a vw dealer - have assumed from previous exp that their prices will be over the top) tho I will check with them to get a comparative figure, and just in case they are reasonable.

By the way if anyone else notices the tailgate struts starting to loose their oomph, if our experience is anything to go by, they can deteriorate fairly quickly from their. They had clearly lost their edge a week or so ago, needing more of a push to fully open, but now wont even hold the gate up in position.

I did search the threads but couldn't find anything. If anyone has any experience to share or knows a good source, that'd be great

Try a 4x2 cut to the right length and use it to prop the boot up. You can lie it down in the boot floor when you don't need it and even use it as a cricket bat if you need a spare if you're playing a game of backyard cricket.

For a more OEM fix check pricing from the dealer and ask them for the part number so you can compare pricing online. Shipping on these is going to be a killer and may in fact find it's cheaper to buy the genuine part from the dealer.

thanks guys, checked out dealer and better than I thought but stll a lot more than the alternatives

96.45 each or 192.90 for a pair. There is also this UK mob Volkswagen Tiguan Boot Struts | Tailgate Struts | Bonnet Gas Struts, which would be 28 GBP for a pair plus postage (10), rounding out to about 72 aud for a pair delivered. However looks like some of the local options above may be even better, so will check out and add to this thread once received and fitted with my exp and any tricks/hurdles on fitment. cheers

tHE EBAY LINK, $24? only one i could see (maybe I missed something) were bilstein from the uk, price of the struts good, very similar to sgs engineering, but their delivery charge over the top, so can have fitted here for cheaper

now all done, I went with local supplier (middle one of the five), they were good and final price was $110 fitted. A pretty good price and comes with a 3 year warranty. I also decided against oem since they only lasted 4.5 years, would have thought struts would have lasted longer, tho from feedback on the forum here (no one else seems to be replacing) others may be getting a better life out of theirs.

The new struts are good, but do seem a little stiffer and not quite as quick to lift the door out the way, but then I am comparing the dying days of the old struts (at least re stiffness) vs brand new ones. Bottom line as long as we get a good life out of these , we'll be happy.

Self fitment would be easy, just a couple of clips so a quick job, but at $110 fitted with a local 3 year warranty, job done straight away for not much more than bringing in from elsewhere and doing self.

I will also be posting re our recent experience with replacing a key.
