    DSG transmission experiences

    Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of upgrading the old Tiguan Tiptronic to the new one. The new one only available with DSG.

I am a skeptic of the DSG given the 1.4TSI Polo's and A3s (ones that I know of).

I have had issues with the Tiptronic leaking between the transmission and driveshaft, but that's it.

What are you're experiences with the old model Tiguan DSG? Would you ever get DSG again?

7-speed wet clutch in the high-output ones is a good thing.

    Failures are rare.

Get the 7 speed DQ500 in the AWD Tigs.

As Umai says its proven to be pretty reliable.

That's testament to the number (or lack of) reported issues/failures.

I think we've only had a couple of faulty examples on here so far, compared to other variations of DSG.

From memory there was a couple of Transporters with ~150,000 km and a Tiguan had a gearbox replaced under warranty.

One of the Transporters with some shifting issues had a seal issue which caused a small oil leak/level to drop and once seal was replaced and oil level back to normal was OK.

The Tiguan wasn't actually confirmed that the gearbox was at fault as the same issues were present after the gearbox was replaced under warranty. It could have been transmission mounts or driveshaft - we'll never know as the person reporting the problem never updated the thread. Unfortunately this happens sometimes when people come onto the forum with a problem and when it gets fixed "forget" to come back and let everyone know how it was resolved.

If a family member were to be looking at a car I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a Tiguan with 7 speed DSG. It's the only one I'd consider keeping outside warranty.

As a bit of an idea on how strong this gearbox is, Guy Harding ran his stage 3 Tiguan with 425kW and 660Nm through a stock DQ500 DSG. It did have updated software for higher clamping pressures and increased launch RPM bit it was still running stock clutches. This car won Hot Tuner in 2014. The weak link in the drivetrain ended up being the rear CV's which they busted a couple of times. But the DSG was fine.

The '500' in DQ500 is the 500Nm theoretical torque limit.
