What ATF to use in the Aisin 6-speed transverse automatic gearbox?

The original VAG technical literature, published back in 2004, for the TF-60SN gearbox manufactured by Aisin Co. LTD. Japan (VAG gearbox model numbers 09G, 09K & 09M), specifies G 052 025 A2 or Esso JWS 3309.

Therefore, the OEM fluid is most likely to be manufactured by "Esso" and "Mobil" (who are of course both subsidiaries of the ExxonMobil Corporation) under the identical product name of "ATF 3309", both of which are being slowly replaced by "Mobil Super ATF 3309".

See the product data sheet (click) for Mobil ATF 3309.

    What is the difference between the two part numbers G 052 025 A2 and G 055 025 A2?

Some of you may have thought, "why does the original literature mention G 052 025 A2, but the PDS for Mobil ATF 3309 mentions G 055 025 A2 instead?"

I don't know the true answer, but here are my observations...

    • The VAG parts catalogue no longer makes any mention of G 052 025 A2 when referring to the 09D*, 09G, 09K & 09M gearboxes, and in fact the only ATF part number shown is G 055 025 A2.
    • VW & Audi U.S.A. fluid capacity charts mention the use of G 052 025 A2 and G 055 025 A2 interchangeably for the same gearboxes in different vehicles.
    • Early editions of the product data sheet [2005] for Mobil ATF 3309 did in fact mention G 052 025 A2, yet the later editions [2008] mention G 055 025 A2 - with no apparent change in technical specs.
    • There doesn't seem to be any images of G 052 025 A2 labelled OEM bottles on the internet, but plenty of G 055 025 A2 OEM bottles (perhaps a tenuous argument).
    • The fact that the original technical literature mentions Esso JWS 3309 is all that matters really.

... so as far as I'm concerned, G 052 025 A2 has either been superseded long ago, or can be replaced by, G 055 025 A2.

Therefore again, the OEM fluid is most likely to be manufactured by Esso and Mobil under the identical product name of ATF 3309, both of which are being slowly replaced by Mobil Super ATF 3309.

Can I use any other fluid?

Having established the above, I personally see no harm in using any other fluid made by a respected manufacturer that is the equivalent of G 055 025 A2 or meets the JWS 3309 spec (such as Fuchs Titan ATF 4400 and febi 29934). As I've alluded to elsewhere, I don't exactly believe the JWS 3309 spec is the greatest ATF specification ever created by man...

There are also suggestions that the JWS 3309 spec is compatible with Toyota ATF Type T-IV (see the Mobil ATF 3309 datasheet), or that they amount to the same thing.

And then there are some people (mainly the Americans) on other forums with different vehicles that use a similar gearbox (Aisin TF-80SC), who are using full-synthetic ATF made by prominent American companies, such as Amsoil, Mobil, Redline, Valvoline, etc. Most seem to report no issues and even some improvements in shift quality and/or noise.

Consult the internet for more details, research thoroughly, and as with any advice from the internet (including this thread!) use caution.

    Are there any exceptions?

    Yes!
Certain 09G gearboxes with the codes (but not limited to) KPH, MAM or MAN require a different ATF to the one above.

    These gearboxes require part number G 055 540 A2.

Please note the above is by no means a comprehensive list. Check with your dealer, particularly if it's a 2009 or later model.
