    Save some cash on service by ordering the right (sized) oil

    I discovered an interesting thing this week.

    Our Multivan was serviced at the local dealer a few weeks ago and during a follow up I (finally) remembered to ask a few questions, one of which was what oil do you use and how much is it? (So I can have a spare bottle for top between services if they are ever needed).

    For reference, the receipt from the service says "Synpower X1-111 5w30" and the 2010 2.0L TDI uses 7 Litres! The listed cost on the receipt is $140 (ex GST).

    But back to my point. The dealer got back to me saying that they keep 5L bottles in stock but have to order 1L bottles. And the prices are:

    5L = $123.35
    1L = $15.30

    Which I assume include GST since 1 x 5L + 2 x 1L = ~$140 (ex gst).

    But for those keen observers amongst us you will notice that 5 x 1L = $15.30 x 5 = $76.50. I queried this and was told it was indeed correct.

    So for my next service I will make sure they order in 7 x 1L bottles and specifically use them since it's going to save me ~$47 (or ~12% of the total service cost).

    Seems crazy, but there it is.

    If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

    I buy the same Valvoline synpower XL III for our TDI, as I do my own oil changes.

    Last 20ltr I bought was around 6 months ago = $220 inc GST

    TDI DSG,

    Where do you get your oil from in Melbourne? I'd like to purchase 20L and service my car from now on.
    I've just purchased a oil extractor and plan to change the oil every 7500kms now.

    FYI i have a 2.0 TDI passat.

    Oil extractors are a terrible idea. Better to use the sump plug & do the job properly.
