Help, Penrite 5w30 Enviro+ GF5, not VW approved?

    Hi to all.
Today I dropped my TSI Tiguan with some European specialist mechanic down the road for an interim service, I told him to use Penrite 5w30 oil as I have always been.

However when I came back from work to pick up the car I saw an empty Penrite 5w30 Enviro+ GF5 bottle which I know is a different oil to the one VW approves, they do look very similar though.

I brought it up to the mechanic and was told not to worry as they are close enough. So should I worry and do some immediate rectification or just leave as is and no damage will be done to the engine. Please advise.

    GF5 is a Dexos1-approved General Motors oil.

It is not 504/507-approved for Volkswagen.

Ideally, it needs to be replaced, along with a new filter.

At last count, Penrite make 22 products with a viscosity grade of 5W-30, three of which are part of their Enviro+ range, so the mechanic did well to narrow it down, even if he (or she) ultimately chose a product that neither VW nor Penrite would recommend for your vehicle.

It's possible that Penrite Enviro+ GF-5 5W-30 could work in your vehicle, though unlike your mechanic, neither VW nor Penrite nor myself will vouch for it, so if you decide to leave it in, it's all on him (or her).

However, if you want to be pragmatic, probably best to drain and replace it with something that's a known quantity (i.e. oils with VW approval).

Saw that stuff at Supercrap last week and had a good look at the container.

As Diesel Vert says its a GM approved oil and nowhere does it mention VW.

It was on the shelf beside the correct oil so maybe the muppet that bought it didn't check.

I had the Polo serviced at a "reputable" VW non dealer service centre and they put the wrong UNAPPROVED oil in it and I had to get it replaced along with the filter

I complained bitterly, with documentation to prove the oil they used was wrong and got a refund to pay for the new stuff.

I suggest you show them the container and demand they fix it.

NEXT TIME buy the correct oil and take it with you as I do Even at the Stealers. Polo goes in on Tuesday and there will be 5 liters of Enviro+ going with it.

No, I would say, change the mechanic. It's obvious that he is unable to read and he doesn't understand how important is the right oil for the modern engine. He doesn't deserve your business.

Thanks for the tips guys, it's just one of those annoying things where you want to spend that bit extra time and money to be nicer to your car but ends up hurting it.

Plus I do believe there is a cost factor involved. The GF5 is simply lot cheaper to buy. So by charging me hundred odd bucks there is considerably more profit.

I'd be worried in a diesel, as you need the 507 part, but in a petrol I thought it was more the 504 component, which does seem to be a lot more widespread amongst oils??
