    General maintenance questions

Hey guys. I'm a newb any help would be appreciated. I bought a scirocco dsg six months ago, I have done 4000 kms so far.

    1. My car is telling me to change my oil now. Do I actually have to do this after 6months or should I just top it up myself?
    2. If I do decide to replace the oil (flush out), am I able to do this with a friend who knows what they are doing or a non VW licensed mechanic? Or would doing that void my warranty? All other servicing I plan to take to VW servicing.
    3. If I do take it to the VW service centre how much do they charge for an oil change between service dates?
    4. I have accidentally poured too much engine oil in (me being retarded), it is about 1cm above the max line on the dip stick. How damaging is this?

My first service is 7500 kms or one year I believe.

So then I would ask how is everyone else maintaining their car. Doing oil things yourself or always taking it to VW servicing for oil changes between service dates etc?

    Thanks for any help.

    Was the car brand new?

Is it saying to do and oil change or top up? Very different things.

If it's within warranty, take it to a VW specialist as a minimum. Don't be getting your knowledgeable friend in on it.

Call VW if you want to know the prices.

Overfilling is as bad as under filling the engine. So you know the score for next time. If the oil is off the bottom of the dipstick. You can chuck a litre in.

That should get it back on the dipstick. To fill from min to max takes a litre too. So if it's now half way, it'll need half a litre to fill right up.

You have probably 5-700 ml too much in there now.

The car will tell you when it's due a service if the clocks were reset. It has a counter built in. Usually 365 days or 15000km I believe. VW are way up on this game and provide a log book, with that information in it for you to read.

Don't go anywhere but the dealer is my advice then. Tell them you slipped topping the oil. Could be the service intervals weren't set at the PDI or something.

If you have too much oil, another way is to buy a oil drain tube, are pretty cheap and you can get them from Super Cheap and through the dip stick tube can be sucked out. The oil interval change on the display can show the oil change earlier than 12 months or 15k kms. Computer will calcuate how the car is driven and used.

If your lazy drain the oil out and replace, I wouldn't be sure about reusing it

Car could have been sitting for 6 months in dealers yard before you got it Look at the build date on the sticker.

It can happen that in some engines if you overfill with oil the big ends can dip into it and foam it up with dire results, like a big bang eventually.

Build date was august 2014. I purchased august 2015. Anyway I called Volkswagen and they said it's optional to change oil/service in between service dates.

I only do 4000 kms per six months so I think it should be fine to change oil once a year? I'll drain the excess oil out this weekend.

    Thx again

One change a year is fine. It's in the instruments, 15000km or 12 months, which ever comes first.
