Good to see you enjoying the car and having fun.

I reckon there is gonna be a POLO for sale in Braidwood real soon

Put the arches on man, I reckon it`d look killer then.

I've been enjoying my mk 2 up in the hills recently, and I've found the gear ratios are pretty damn good for some spirited driving! (inc high speed hills & overtakes)

Just needs a little more grunt.

Matt, I can't thank you enough for selling me the Golf. I has been so much fun diving it's little heart out on the country roads. Add a 2 litre and some decent shocks and it should be almost perfect. Just enough power to make it challenging to overtake but not enough to loose my licence.

As for the flares, I'd need bigger wheels to suit them and I'm happy with the steelies. I might get them widened when the tyres need replacing and then fit the flares.

Or I might take off the bumpers and run it naked.

    Cheers

    Paul

I started to fit a decent sound system today but got stumped by all the wires and connections hanging in the dash. Then I thought I'd take the easy way out and follow the wires from the speakers. I knew Alex took the rear speakers with him because of the big holes in the old parcel tray so I went looking for the front speakers........and found nothing. There aren't any!

Who makes a car with no front speakers? Even my old Polo has front speakers. So now I need to get speaker enclosures for the front doors and fit rear speakers on the side panels adjacent to the rear parcel tray. I carry my pushbike in the back so there's no point fitting speakers to the parcel tray.

I also tried to get the heater working. Out here in the country it gets down to -5 overnight in winter, no place for a car that can't keep you warm. I lifted the bonnet to check the switch to turn the water so it flows to the heater core and guess what? No plumbing to the heater core! Someone has bent the rubber pipe back on itself so it goes out the engine and straight back in. Now I need to check if the heater core is OK or even if it's still there.

So no sound system and no heating. Looks like I'm going to need some parts to turn this car into a good daily driver. Might have to give Matt a call.

Because I carry the bike in the back I took out the bar across the rear strut towers. There is a bolt on each end of the bar which I undid and it came out easily. I know it's not a structural piece to tie the strut towers together because there is a fair bit of sideways flex in the mounts. I think the bar is only there to mount a seat belt for a child's seat but can anyone tell me if it's there for any other reason?

    Cheers

I told you the heater didnt work. Mk2 and 3 heater matrixs last about 10 years. Cheap to buy, labour intensive to fit.

Rear strut bar is an Aussie ADR thing.

Mk2s have front speakers, they are in the dash, or where the door pockets are on late Mk2s overseas.

good to see my baby lives on, it is a strong motor and does moove when it needs to.i never fitted a stereo, that was from the previous owner(loved the 4gauge power cable still under the carpet), i just drove around listening to the induction roar.

i took the arches off when i was going to fit the g 60's and wide bbs but things changed and i sold them as a package(not the wheels)

the trick to first gear is to approach it like reverse(push down and forwards) but this will be easily fixed with a bush for the selector, the old one is non existant ,the selector bar is just floating in the large hole in the flatplate.

good luck with her just keep a eye on the water levels

and when i first rebuilt her

Put one aside for me. Must have heat. Must have heat.

Rear strut bar is an Aussie ADR thing - is it just for seat belt mounts?

Alex, you'll be happy to know the engine is getting stronger every day. When I got the car the display said average speed 35, fuel economy 9.7 Now av speed is 87 kph and economy is down to 6.8 litres per 100 k.

It still coughs a little bit in 3rd when overtaking but is getting better every day. Also starts first time without stalling and idles smoothly. I haven't done anything to the engine so I think it just needed a few long drives to clear the cobwebs.

Water levels haven't changed much but I did have to put in a litre of oil. Car has done 1200 k's since I picked it up last week. No show pony this car!

As for 1st, it takes a bit of getting used to but I no longer take off in 3rd by mistake!

    Cheers

    Paul

Yup, rear bar is just for baby seats and chassis rigidity.

I actually changed the shift linkages and bushes up in the engine bay, you would have had fun driving it before that

I think the bush in front of the shifter in the shifter box is buggered. Time to change that is when you take the exhaust off

And you dropped the front tyre pressure to 20 psi so it wouldn't make so much noise when it hits bumps.

Back up to 35 front and 30 rear so it doesn't squeal so much through tight corners.
