Yes they are legal. If your not changing the design from OEM then yes. If you have to fabriacte of modify anything then you need an Engineer certificate.

Coilovers are the same design as OEM suspension which is a part that gets changed with wear and tear. The only difference between the coilovers and OEM is that coilovers can be adjusted.

And that's what makes them illegal. If you can adjust them and lower the car to a height that is too low, then they are not road legal. Also, spring rates are usually very hard on coilovers, which also makes them illegal...

But hey, don't let that stop you from running them, I have been for over a year now!!

they're not. but i believe some one got the engineered by drilling and havinga stop on the thread so that the locking plates couldn't move.

I think it's just easier to borrow a stock set from someone (or have spare set handy) and just switch when need be

They are definately not illegal. I know someone who bought a brand new car factory delivered with coilovers. They were not put on at the customers request, it came like that off the dealers showroom floor, with coilovers!

I think what you might find is that coilovers pose a problem because they change the suspension design in many instances compared to the setup that the car was complied with. Its like some porsches come from the factory with spacers so they are legal on those cars but not others.
