    Tiguan R Discussion

There's been a few rumours, spy shots plus various articles, so thought it was time to put all in the one spot.

Here's the latest article: Volkswagen Australia wants other hot Tiguans

Also youtube clip with testing at Nurburgring:

I think the R is a better chance than the BiTDI as at least the R engine is designed for hot weather climates like Aus. The BiTDI is restricted to cool weather climates only.

Pretty sure the exhaust on the 162 R-line is exactly same as Highline (no spec changes) and will be pretty quiet - no DSG pops. You'll have to get an aftermarket/custom cat-back exhaust to get any noise.

Disappointing, way too silent, even in Sports mode.

In German car forums it is suggested that the video refers to a tuner, not to a VW (factory) car.

Yup, they don't want VW to eat too much into the more profitable (profit margins) AUDI clientele...

Actually I wouldn't see a Tiguan R taking away Audi customers. It would be a model without an equal and this is something difficult for the marketing boffins at VW to comprehend. They don't know the size of the (potential) market so it makes it a riskier development.

Actually I see it working in Australia but maybe not so much in markets overseas. Australia is a bit of a strange market in that sales are skewed in favour of performance models. So the case for a Tiguan R is stronger here than in other markets.... but the likelihood that they would develop a Tiguan R just for Australia is pretty slim.

Pre-dieselgate I think this might have flown but now I'm not so sure that the return on the R&D spend is such a good case. Love to be proven wrong.
