Cost me around $3,000 at a VW mechanic (not a dealership) - new dual clutch, new Liqui Moly transmission fluid and new transmission filter. Originally several months earlier I had a transmission fluid change (fluid level back up to where it should have been!) and new transmission filter and all seemed to be good - but, alas, not to be! The reverse issue returned and one day recently after parking the car it then wouldn't go into gear at all when my wife went to start it so we had it towed to the VW mechanic. VAG diagnostics indicated highly likely to be dual clutch and not the mechatronics unit (VW guy recently said that I did pretty well getting 8-9 years from the dual clutch: bit better then the norm, notwithstanding the very low fluid level!). Now reverse, and in fact all gear changes, are very positive, and the car has more transmitted power, especially at lower revs. No more panicking when having to do quick three-point turns or reverse quickly out of a tricky situation!
Used to replace clutches when I was a teenager with my dad, but this was beyond me - don't have the equipment at home. Did see a video on Youtube on dual clutch replacement and have seen new DSG dual clutches for sale on eBay; just too many risks though going down the DIY route for me so went to the specialist VW mechanic - suspect I would have paid a lot more had I gone to a "stealership" and wouldn't be surprised if they also tried to sell me a new mechatronics unit!
