Will 235 or 245 on 18 x 8s rub?
I have purchased these wheels for my MY09 2.0 TSI Jetta with the std (GTI) suspension:
18" LM SILVER WHEELS RIMS FIT VW JETTA 2011+ | eBay
and fitting them with 235 x 40 profile tyres or 245 x 40, if they have clearance.
The wheels are offset +45 and the suspension has not been lowered, so does anyone foresee any clearance problems with this combination?
'Diesel_vert', your input would be greatly appreciate

any reason to do those sizes?
I would just stick to 225/40 or 235/40 max for rolling diameter reasons

Hi Dylan,
I did a comparo on this website: Custom rims, wheel tire packages for your ride - RIMSnTIRES.com and there's not much difference in the rolling circumference or cost, but the footprint is wider. The car currently has 225 x45, 17's and thought going a little wider would be OK as long as there's no rubbing anywhere. Comments please?

yeah width is all good. means more traction.
just the rolling dia which effects the speedo and acceleration. also looks stupid from a bigger side wall when going up to something like 245/40 imho

IMO, there is a very good chance that fitting a 245/40 R18 tyre on a 8.0 J x 18 wheel will rub. Using a 235/35 R19 tyre on a 8.0 J x 19 wheel as a reference point (as fitted to a Golf VI R, which in itself is a big fitment - you get conflicting reports of rubbing even though it's a factory option), a 245/40 R18 tyre is both wider and taller by a further 7 mm and 5 mm respectively.
I agree with dylan8. Your best bet would be to fit 235/40 R18 tyres. They virtually have the same width and a slightly smaller diameter as our reference tyre, which I don't think we want to go beyond without modifications (unless you're aiming for a show car or gentle cruiser).
In regards to speedo deviation, a 245/40 R18 tyre will reduce the speedo reading by 3.0 km/h at a speed of 100 km/h, a 235/40 R18 tyre by 1.7 km/h, and a 225/40 R18 tyre by 0.5 km/h (all compared to a 225/45 R17 tyre).
A great reference table on what fits, and what doesn't fit, is available at the American-based GolfMkV Forums, here.

Thanks for your input Diesel_vert, it seems that 235 x 40 are the go and shouldn't rub, that link you posted from the US based Golf MkV Forums is really informative, I'm saving a copy of that one.... If I do get rubbing with the 235's I'll have to get some 5mm spacers which should fix the problem.
Dylan, thanks also for your input.

no worries.
cant say iv checked... but id imagine the 235s would be cheaper in AUS...?

I've had 235x40 on my 18x8 +45 rims and they rubbed in the back over heavy bumps at speed or when people were in the back. They were Dunlop Direzza Star Specs.

Thanks for your input jazd, I was wondering if the rear wheel area where the tyres rub would be similar on the Golf and the Jetta, maybe some learned person on the forum would know.
Dylan, I was considering these tyres : [4 Tyres] 235/40R18 95W Achilles ATR Sport - [Melbourne] Australia Wide Freight | eBay , they get quite good reviews and the price is right, what do you think?
