    Vcds software.

Hey all. Probably been said a million times before, but I am looking for the best scanning tool for my 06 golf gti and my mother-in-laws 08 golf 1.6fsi. Not worried about price. Just want good quality product. Thanks in advance.

The freight cost could be quite high from the US so get a quote first from one of their suppliers in Aust.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

VCDS is probably the most complete tool, used by specialists everywhere. It's expensive, but it does everything you could want for zero cost once you own it.

There are a couple of options, the USB one can be had for as little us US$199 (for 3 VINs) or $299 (10 VINs). It's $169 to upgrade from 3 to 10 or 10 to unlimited should you want to later on. To be clear if you buy the 3 VIN license you have to upgrade to 10 THEN to unlimited, so unless it really really is just for you and the missus, 10 is probably the better place to start.

The WiFi interface is far more expensive at $449 but comes with 10 VINs. Same upgrade of $169 to get unlimited VINs, or you can buy the pro version upfront for $599 and save $20!! (exactly the same thing but with unlimited VINs).

I would be hesitant to buy from anyone other than an authorised dealer or direct from Ross-Tech since there are lots of fakes out there. Ve very wary of anyone who is selling one listing a version number since they tend to be clones that are blocked in later software updates.

The older HEX-USB+CAN interface (which is what I have) isn't sold direct anymore, but if you can find one on the second-hand market (still be careful of fakes) you might just snaffle a bargain if someone is upgrading. There is no real benefit to the newer version just yet, although newer modules in newer cars will slowly become unsupported on the older hardware. They do pop up now and then on the forums so it's worth keeping an eye out (or asking if anyone wants to sell).

OBDEleven is the other one that people recommend, it's cheaper and probably easier to use. I haven't used it personally, but many people rate it. It is Android only so if you live in an iOS world you're out of luck. You also need to buy in app "credits" to access one click functions. Having never used it I'm not 100% how this all works, I'm sure someone can help you out.

Just so happens there is a stockist of the OBDEleven 10 minutes away from me. May as well give it a go and see what happens.
