    Transmission noise

    I have a 2007 Golf Comfortline 2.0 TDI 6 speed manual.

The transmission makes a resonance at 60KPH in 4th gear.

It is like a vibration or throbbing sound which fades as you slow.

I recently had the RH drive shaft replaced as the joint failed. The left one is original.

I have owed the car from new. No 212,000Km. Serviced without missing an interval.

    Timing belts changed.

Any ideas about my noise? It has been there for a long time but seems to be more pronounced lately.

Update: noise was coming from transmission. Bearings and synchro rings replaced. Very costly.

An expensive repair on a manual hey, and the DSG is considered the problem child

Can you elaborate on 'costly' for us, this detail may add some value for the next punter that comes along.

Second the request. We have a 2007 Golf Comfortline 2.0 TDI in silver, its was originally my brother's before we bought it from him after he upgraded. It has done 185,000 km and it would be helpful to be able to plan for possible future additional maintenance costs.

I was told by the transmission specialist that to remove & refit the transmission would be $500 plus parts to effect the repair. Final bill ran out to $2,750! That was using VW Genuine parts. This guy really knew his stuff but he couldn't explain why or how this happened. He was surprised that the gearbox failed at 220,000 km.

Thanks for the reply, and OUCH! I will suggest to the wife that she be gentle with the gearbox.

    It's an unusual failure indeed.

Not that common these days for a manual gearbox failure in a VW.
