Reverse Camera (in rear hatch handle) for Mk5 Golf

Has anyone successfully retrofitted one of these cameras into a Mk5 Golf Wagon?

I recall seeing either an ebay auction, or a thread mentioning that the Mk6 Wagon has a larger handle opening than the Mk5, and that these cameras were incompatible.

This looks to plug into a RCD/RNS510 or a RCD330 that has the RVC plug, so aside from the physical dimensions, would the only other issue be the actual wiring, and/or that the Mk5 Golf Wagon has an actual switch/button under the handle cover? The one in the auction above appears to be hard plastic, effectively just a handle.

I have retrofitted one of these into a MK5 Jetta.

It was a MASSIVE ball ache and was a bespoke solution. Unless you are confident you can fabricate your own solution, don't attempt it

What was the biggest hassle? The wiring, the mechanism, or the actual dimensions of the handle?

Reverse Camera (in rear hatch handle) for Mk5 Golf

My recollection from when I thought about doing this for my Mk5 Golf was that it requires physically cutting the tailgate to make it fit plus you need to fit and route the drain.

There are a number of online guides on how to do it but unless you're comfortable applying a grinder to the tailgate of your car, I'd say don't bother.

Edit: the wiring and earthing to the head unit is easy and would be the same for a licence plate mounted RVC (which is what I did in the end). Just invest in a set of trim removers from Jaycar ($20) and a bit of yellow-tongue to help you get over the wheel arch and past the B pillar.

Well you have to cut the body to make it fit. Then hacking up the plastic mould that holds the existing handle and number plate lights but still using it b/c the wiring is baked in. Then a custom bracket to hold it all on.

Thanks for the replies. It sure sounds like a lot of work. I don't think I need a RVC that bad

Do it at the headunit. Pick it up off the loom that plugs into the headunit.

Yeah. I took the +ve from the head unit but I recall tapping the -ve off to a ground point in the rear 3/4 panel. There was already a ground on a post so I just added to that.
