mk5 gti rattle/sound during idle

Can anyone please inform me with the mk5 gti fsi engine sound , is it supposed to have a tappet sound , as many people have said including the seller of this car that it is normal , in many other threads from around the world ijust cant get a concrete answer to this .....

I have a 06 gti - has 96,000kms - dead stock and as far as i know in good working order. It makes an audible "tap.tap.tap.tap" at idle.
Whether this is the valves , or injectors i have no idea - but the car is fine. Seemed to be the same noise with all gti's i checked out too.

Overly loud tapping could indicate low oil/stuffed pcv system/loose upper head parts etc.

Its very normal for our engine, the mrs still thinks my the gti is diesel :screwy:

Its the timing chain that goes around the intake cam and camshaft adjuster. The only way to get rid of it is to replace the intake cam, the chain and the camshaft adjuster. You cant just replace one as they allwear together. I found this out the hard way. These are the parts you need:

I asked the same thing when i bought mine. Sometimes it sounds worse, other times it just sounds like injectors.

People are right tho, it does sound like a diesel!

When your engine is warn and being running for about 30mins and you can hear the "diesel noise" from inside the car when your idling, that means that you need to replace what "thezoneR32" said in the previous post, the timing chain and tensioner. that being said, the fsi does sound like a diesel at idle, because of the direct injection, however if it's loud when the engine is warm then you might need to replace the suggested parts.

Before too many diagnoses are provided without actually listening to it, it's worth taking it to a specialist for checking out prior to jumping to conclusions. The direct injection (FSI, TSI, TFSI) is very noisy and can be interpreted as a tappet type noise. There's a few highly recommended independents in Perth so pick one that's in your area and get them to check it out.

Its the injectors . Ive finally got an FSI specific injector tester and can finally find out the flow rates of some of these injectors !
The reason why they get noisy is mainly due to the carbon being built up on the tips causing uneven spray patterns . Then you dont get the adequate fuel and the injectors are opened for longer and Im pretty sure the ecu also raises the pressure ( need clarrification on that though)

being a fsi 2007 my08 it would be a timing belt , so i think think what i have seen through other comments around the place is the way it just sounds
