Loud pop from my 2006 FSi 2.0T Jetta

I was driving yesterday and put some power down, then heard a loud pop/ bang. The car struggled to keep RPM up and cut out. Managed to drive it home but drove like a dog and when it came to gear changes sounded awful. Had to put it into manual. Exhaust system fault light came on and have it parked up since, waiting to go to the garage on Monday. Had the water pump and timing belt changed about 2 weeks ago. Could this be what caused the problem?

    Highly likely.

Sounds like something wasn't tightened properly and the timing has moved. Frankly, I'd be dubious about even starting it again — try and get the garage to come to you...

I was thinking the same about starting it again. Have free towing with my insurance, hopefully the garage will own up to their mistake if ts a problem with their work. Paid $900 for the new pump and timing belt. They seem genuine guys but have only used them twice.

Timing can't move its all electronic. It could be something simple like a hose between the turbo outlet and the throttle body - so thats including the intercooler pipe work all the hoses feeding air into the manifold. If you had a remote diverter valve on yours you could include that hose too. If any of these blow off you'll come to a stop real quick with lots of farts and pops too, Real easy fix of course.

Electronic valve timing when you replace the belt?

He means the ignition timing. Some crossed purposes.

Well yes physical cam timing but you'd want to hope its not that, that can occur if the tensioner was not setup properly and yes you would not want to drive the car if that were the case. Was it making some loud noise from the engine prior to the pops and farts
