Will a Mark 5 GTI accomodate the current 18inch Detroit alloy wheels and if so how much would a set cost me?

Yes they will fit, very popular upgrade. Personally I think you should also lower it if your going to go 18's as it lifts up the MK5 body a bit.

    see:

There is a set of black ones on ebay for $1500 not including tires.

Looking for a set of these myself for my street tyres, although I wouldn't go the all blacks.

Cool thanks. How much does lowering cost?

There are a few options you can go with. Coilovers, lowered springs, and new shocks are the most common.

The price varies widely, but the best things you fan do are to have a look at the Wheels and Suspension section on here, or jump on Google and have a look, or just start ringing around and get quotes.
