It is a common fault related to a manufacturing flaw in some compressors, plenty of info about it on the web.

VAG might come to the party so it's worth a shot, but they certainly wouldn't be obliged to cover any costs.
MKV Golf 2.0 TDI DSG Sportline. Just nice.

    Thanks for your replies guys...

I asked the person at the dealer what my chances were of this, and was told that they've had success before with this sort of goodwill claim but they won't guarantee anything. The fact that my car is almost 5 years old now probably lessens my chances by a fair bit. But they will put my case forward, and I'll await their response.. fingers crossed!

In the meantime can anybody recommend a reputable non-dealer mechanic I can see in Sydney to get a second quote for the ac repair?

What part of Sydney are you? - no point driving for 2 hours in peak traffic if there's somebody local.

16 years ago I lived in the Inner West Sydney (Glebe) and that term covered about 10 suburbs. Now it covers about 30 /rolls eyes.

What about Wolfsburg Motors or Seb at Euromotive? There's a mobile guy around five Dock / Concord too.

Wait for the goodwill, if you have a full service history with the dealer you should have a chance at seeing 50/50 parts and labour

    An update:
Volkswagen has agreed to pay for a 70% of the total cost. I'm pretty satisfied with this outcome given that the car is almost 5 years old.
Guess all those expensive regular dealer servicings have paid off!

Bad news is that I have to wait a month before they get the parts and have an opening to install it, and it's going to be the hottest summer ever in Sydney.

    good result.

Just for interest – mkV Golf. I paid $1550 for a complete new system (compressor, condenser ect) at one of the big AC specialist in BNE. I dropped it off at 7am for a quote, they called at about 9am with diagnoses, I picked it up at 4pm with cold air. They are fitting aftermarket parts with warranty. On the day there was 6 vehicles in the work shop, 3 VWs, 2 Audis and 1 mitsubishi.

Can you name this big AC place ?
When my AC was out I could not find anyone knowledgable person in Brisbane willing to even have a look.
I found pletly of places with no clue willing to have a look, spent a lot of money on diagnosis all were wrong.
