I did end getting a response on Wednesday. They've stated that the turbo has failed and needs replacing at a cost of $7500 inc a new oil/air separator.
I nearly fell over at the price and then a myriad of questions spring to mind so I ask, which turbo is it? Why do I have to pay for both if it's only one turbo? Why are you replacing the oil/air separator? All questions unable to be answered without consultation with mechanic, I said leave it and I'll come speak to the service manager myself.
So far they've spent 2 hours on it and they've had the van for nearly 3 weeks and I've got more questions than they have answers.

The plan now is to ask for an explanation how they determined the turbo is at fault without removing it and get a compression test done as well as a report of any fault codes that are present. If it is the turbo I will take it and get it repaired/rebuilt myself.
I honestly don't understand how an oil leak from a turbo can cause the engine to over rev then make a clanging sound. To me it sounds more like a timing belt issue where a valve may have kissed a piston or two.

As for my reasons for coming from a Hiace they are as follows: Hiace was 17yrs old, basic as they come, I'd owned it for 8 years and now wanted something safer and more comfortable being newer and less prone to mechanical issues, well so I thought anyway. The Hiace served it's purpose well but with a new family I wanted something safer, more comfortable and more reliable.

    $7500 for a Turbo and a oil/air separator...

I'd be asking a lot of questions

Sorry to hear about where you are at currently.
I posted earlier with the VW mechanic in Bayswater I have recently moved to based on reviews from this forum. So far so good. And he appears to be a Transporter specialist. It's a long trip from where you are but for a major job like this it might be worth it.

Thanks for the info on the Hiace. So that sounds like you still wouldn't consider the current model then.

Yes even the Turbo on the older 128kw T5 was $6000 around 5 years ago , I still have the one off our older T5 at home . I was told it had an oil leak causing it to be slow to spin up .

Hope ur making some progress with the repair...and assuming you are still keeping the van...I installed a 2+1 foldable & removable rear seats in my T5 LWB and then fitted out behind that for both work and as a double bed...I probably wouldn't have as much stuff as you...but there might be some ideas...I know I couldn't find much when I was looking...it's also removable so in 15 minutes I can have the van to use as a van
    Most of the thread I posted seems to have gone missing (sensor?) so here's a couple of the relevant ones;

A very nice setup and very similar to where I'm headed.

Some progress on the van today. I spoke with the VWmaster tech who is also the service manager which is good news. They have applied for a goodwill gesture to VW Aus on behalf of me (without me knowing as well, I found out today) in regards to my issue of a failed turbo. For this I am very grateful and now just looking for some good luck.
The turbo fault was also explained in detail and is a rare occurrence hence the goodwill application because of the full service history at that dealer and the condition of the vehicle.
My fears were also put to rest re the timing belt after the thorough explanation of how the turbo charger could cause the over rev and faults. That being a diesel and oil injection at high pressure is combustable and therefore when the high pressure turbo bush failed the oil then gets pumped into the system under secondary boost pressure and cause the over rev and malfunction.
I've requested a compression test to be sure and for records keeping purposes anyway and also that the turbos are removed and inspected first before being replaced automatically. Once they're out I'll see for my self and move forward from there.
Finally I'm getting somewhere although it's still costing me dearly having to modify our family holiday plans and the rental vehicle to continue be able to work.
    Stay tuned.

    Markee

Sorry to hear about your experience with your new van. I have been a diesel mechanic for a long time now (mainly larger diesel engines). Turbo failures are common place however our T5's turbos are resilient and of high quality.

Please ensure you request the intercooler and air intake system be thoroughly cleaned as the aluminium dust from the failed compressor impeller is highly erosive to the upper cylinder components. So doing a compression test will only give you a base line result. Only time will tell the extent of the damage.

Intercoolers can be cleaned but not overly successfully.

You will also need to consider the debris in the DPF depending on the damage to the turbine (exhaust side).

I really hope VW Australia come to the party! We are praying for ya mate.

Looking forward to the next update.

I still love my T5. ( just replaced the front control arm bushes on sunday, very hung over i should add).

Hey markee! How has everything panned out?

I am disspointed to read that the turbo has failed, i dream of upgrading my fault ridden 2005 to a post 2010 model. I have replaced powersteering pump, 3 x CV joints, waterpump, air con compressor had the exhaust manifold crack and spent hours fault finding little bits and pieces! The T5 does have its problems, but i love mine! Its done 207,000km and its going strong!

Can you let me know how your TOYOs were going before the breakdown? I have started a post on AT options and need some guidance!

Hope everything is working out with your schmick rig!

I think the turbo issues are mostly with the 132kW twin-turbo?
So I think the 103kw single turbo like mine is less susceptible?
