    2.0 TDI Timing Belt Change

    Anyone done one of these?
Was thinking of doing mine over Christmas (CAAC Engine)
Got the kit plus a water pump from VW but was wondering how others have held the engine up when you remove the mount without a special VW holderupperer tool?

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

    I've done a few now.

I just put a jack under the sump where the sump plug is. Heaps of meat in the casting there.

I always put a block of wood between the jack and the sump at the place as close to the front of the engine, since I don’t want to put any dent in the sump or crack it if it’s cast aluminium alloy.

The crank lock and injection pump lock (of which you'll need an extra one to lock the cam) are essential.

Even when you've got all the locking tools, it sometimes takes a couple of attempts to get the belt on right, with the timing set correctly, as you need to know where to leave slack in the belt, prior to adding tension.

Even though not a VW I can report doing my sons Astra twin Cam belt a few years back , locked off the cams etc but because the new belt was not stretched like the old one I had to take a guess on which tooth the belt need to be on as it wouldn't line up . So I released one cam until the belt went on and it ran all good except at idle it would idle up and down a bit , after a few weeks I redid it again and managed to get the cam that was out back in position . Probably lucky as I was told that if it had been the other cam it would not have run !!

No wonder I thought the aircon wasn't as good as it used to be!
Look at the rubbish behind the intercooler!

Yeah wow, you've really gone all-out.

I leave the front on, personally.

It just looked too difficult..........with old age creeping on and all..............

Having pulled the front off to do the alternator before..........it doesn't really take long once you know where all the 'secret' bolts/screws are.

Are they all this weird rusty colour?
