2012 Polo GTI - water pump fault

So i recently noticed an oil leak on my garage floor and odd noises coming from the engine every time i started the car recently... I went to VW to get it checked out and these were the findings:

    1. Oil seal had to be replaced
    2. Air pressure sensor had to be replaced
    3. It was the water pump causing that strange noise
    4. Coolant had to be replaced

I was originally quoted $1400 for all of this. As always VW explained what was on the invoice. Interestingly it was diagnosed that there was an internal mechanical fault with the bearing on the water pump and VW paid for all the parts so the bill ended up being $650. I guess that's a small victory.

Has anyone else experienced this with their VW?

The parts all come with a 2 year warranty so I hope all goes well until then.

Does anyone know if this was a recall at one point?

My water pump was replaced about a year ago (under warranty) due to some grinding/crunching noise coming from the engine when starting the car and from 2000RPM upwards. Is that the same strange noise that you described above?
From a quick google, VW water pump and fuel pump problems seem to common on the web.

Yes! When i would accelerate the grinding noise would get louder and that was to do with the water pump.

I have the MY12.5 and in general i just don't know if the sounds that the car makes is normal.

For instance when I accelerate I can hear the gears changing (or maybe its the clutch??) when I'm in D mode but if i switch to S mode i don't hear it. Do you notice this in ur car?

I can't say I hear the gears. I can hear the ABS or traction thingy clanking/thunking when you first drive the car and accelerate past 15km/hr but that's it. I mostly drive in manual mode though. Save your clutches. D mode is stupid.

Likewise our water pump was replaced after the supercharger clutch failed (it's mounted on the water pump) under warranty.
    MY12.5

So common you can get a rebuilt water pump after market exchange now.

    .
Just had the same thing last week. Had it replaced at a local specialist. I was wondering if I should take back to the stealer to see if VW will give me any goodwill. But having my mechatronics replaced under goodwill only 2 months ago, I had a feeling that I might not get any.

No goodwill from VW this time.

Just received the diagnosis of a water pump pump. 13.5 Polo GTI - this will be the second! One at 45,000km, the current at 80,000km. The first was completed under extended warranty, and i'm hoping to get some amount of good will - as the quote has come back at $1500.

Seems to be a pretty common fault now?
